“President Trump was expected to meet privately with President Gustavo Petro of Colombia at the White House on Tuesday, the first face-to-face encounter between two leaders who have spent months verbally attacking each other,” the New York Times reports.
“There is reason to believe that they could clash, experts say. The men share a penchant for unscripted speeches and fiery accusations, and Mr. Petro, Colombia’s first leftist president, has taken on Mr. Trump for more than a year.”
“But there have also been signs that the tension is easing.”
Playbook: “Petro can be erratic, to say the least. He’s an emotional guy who — if we’re being charitable — wears his heart on his sleeve and is not afraid to push back at perceived slights. He’s also an avowed leftist and a frequent, vocal critic of the U.S. And he doesn’t speak English.”
