September 2, 2026 at 1:03 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Gallup: “Nearly half of Americans (47%) want labor unions in the U.S. to have more influence than they do today, a record high in the past quarter century and roughly double the 23% who want unions to have less influence. Another 26% want unions’ influence to remain the same.”

At Least 25 Top Pentagon Officials Have Departed

September 2, 2026 at 12:42 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“With Army Secretary Dan Driscoll’s resignation announcement this week, the number of top Pentagon officials to depart under Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth climbed to more than two dozen,” MS NOW reports.

“At least 25 military and civilian leaders have been fired or forced out or have retired early since Hegseth’s tenure as defense secretary began in January 2025, creating a dearth of experienced, nonpartisan officials at the top of the Pentagon’s ranks. Several others have been reassigned or demoted.”

Fueling Political Wire, One Cup at a Time

Every morning before the sun’s up, I sit down to work on Political Wire with a cup of Trade Coffee beside me.

It’s become part of the ritual — opening the laptop, scanning the news, and taking that first sip of a roast matched perfectly to my taste. Trade connects me with small roasters across the country, delivering beans that are always fresh and far better than what you’ll find at the grocery store.

If you love coffee as much as I do, use this link to get 50% off and taste the difference for yourself.

The Ukraine War Is Intensifying

September 2, 2026 at 12:33 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The Economist: “A weary world may not want to hear it, but the war in Ukraine is intensifying, not ending. As it deepens, the conflict is also expanding. Increasingly, serious-minded governments across northern Europe are planning to defend themselves against Russia for decades to come.”

The Rubber-Stamp Congress

September 2, 2026 at 12:03 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

William Kristol: “Donald Trump isn’t on the ballot this November. But these midterms are a referendum on him. The 119th Congress has been controlled by the Republican party. That party’s distinctive feature, its defining characteristic, is that it has supported Trump. It’s done so uniformly, mindlessly, and obediently.”

“So the Democrats’ message—the broad democratic opposition’s message—this fall is simple: If you want another rubber-stamp Congress, vote Republican. But if you want a Congress that will challenge and check all of those Trump administration policies you dislike, vote Democratic.”

German Business Leaders Raise Concerns About Far-Right

September 2, 2026 at 11:33 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Just days before the far-right AfD clinches a possible election triumph, German executives are warning of the economic damage that its extremism might wreak,” Bloomberg reports.

“The party is on track to win the vote in Saxony-Anhalt on Sunday, and could even potentially achieve an absolute majority. Such an outcome in the eastern German state would augur the first far-right government taking power at that level since 1945, a prospect that is openly alarming some business leaders.”

Trump’s ‘Lightning Speed’ Outpaces the Courts

September 2, 2026 at 11:06 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The courts cannot keep up with President Trump,” the New York Times reports.

“In cases on immigration, spending, mass firings and restructuring agencies, the administration has barreled ahead in the face of slow-moving legal challenges. If Mr. Trump loses when those lawsuits are finally resolved, it may be too late as a practical matter to undo what he has achieved.”

“The challenge to Mr. Trump’s enormous White House ballroom project is just the latest example of a mismatch between a judicial system characterized by unhurried deliberation and a presidency built for speed.”

Our Best Guess On the Toss-Ups as Labor Day Nears

September 2, 2026 at 11:03 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Larry Sabato’s Crystal Ball: “Republicans probably retain a slight edge in the Senate, but that assessment has gotten harder to defend over the course of the summer.”

The Iranian Regime’s Dynamics Are Fooling Trump

September 2, 2026 at 10:47 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “When it comes to the regime in Tehran, the Trump administration appears to still be in the early learning stages.”

“A clear sign of this is administration assertions that Iran’s regime is splintered or so divided that it can’t even effectively negotiate. At times, President Donald Trump and his aides, including those who’ve negotiated with Iranian officials, seem frustrated or outright surprised by such dynamics.”

Data Center Fight Divides Trump and Top Republicans

September 2, 2026 at 10:41 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The backlash against AI data centers is uniting a huge swath of Americans, but splitting Republicans trying to defend their power in Washington,” Bloomberg reports.

Bonus Quote of the Day

September 2, 2026 at 9:35 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“If I had any clue that anything remotely like this was even possible, I would never have gotten involved in supporting Trump in the first place. And I’m very ashamed that I did.”

— Right-wing provocateur Milo Yiannopoulos, talking to Piers Morgan after he was deported from the United States.
