Obama Pushes Democrats to Focus On AI

September 13, 2026 at 12:45 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Former President Barack Obama warned during a recent private fund-raising event that artificial intelligence technology could be ‘dangerous’ if not properly managed, as he implored Democrats to aggressively develop political and governing agendas to prioritize the issue in the coming years,” the New York Times reports.

September 13, 2026 at 12:38 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Sen. Roger Marshall (R-KS) was relentlessly booed during a senatorial debate Saturday when he tried to defend President Donald Trump’s tariffs,” Mediaite reports.

Carney’s Audacious Bid to Make Canada Part of the EU

September 13, 2026 at 12:20 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Shortly after Canada and America became embroiled in the worst bilateral trade war in their modern history, the secure phones of Europe’s top leaders lit up with a trans-Atlantic call. Mark Carney was pushing to take Canada’s relationship with the EU to the next level—a bold gambit to rewire the economic cabling of the Western alliance,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“For months, the Canadian prime minister had held private conversations with almost every major European leader—from France to Italy, Germany and Scandinavia and even some of the continent’s lesser-known royals—on how to more deeply plug Canada and its 41 million people into Europe’s 27-nation club.”

“Now, Carney was accelerating Canada’s pivot to Europe, matchmaking a shotgun marriage to offset the pain of its divorce with America. In effect, a threat to make Canada the 51st state is pushing America’s northern neighbor so close to Europe that leaders have begun to half-in-jest dub it the EU’s newest member.”

FCC Chairman Accuses Talarico of Running a ‘Hoax’

September 12, 2026 at 11:17 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“As Jimmy Kimmel‘s interview with James Talarico nears 7 million views on YouTube, FCC Chairman Brendan Carr weighed in on Saturday evening, accusing the Texas U.S. Senate candidate of orchestrating a ‘hoax’ to drive up ‘clicks and donations,'” Deadline reports.

“Earlier this week, Kimmel told viewers that he would be sitting down with an interview with Talarico for his ABC late night show, but that it would be posted to YouTube and not broadcast because of the FCC’s crackdown on its equal time rule.”

‘He May Not Be the Best-Looking Guy’

September 12, 2026 at 11:12 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Republicans are moving to shore up Ken Paxton’s faltering Senate bid, as party donors’ and leaders’ concerns mount and they privately call for the Texas attorney general to step up fundraising and campaign appearances,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“A group aligned with the Republican Senate Leadership Fund expects to spend at least $50 million—and likely substantially more—to boost Paxton’s campaign against Democratic candidate James Talarico, a person familiar with the plan said. Anxiety about Paxton follows the Republican Midterm Convention this past week in Dallas, where President Trump made multiple jabs at Paxton’s appearance and voice, before urging voters to turn out for him.”

New York Times: Republican groups rush to Paxton’s aid in Texas after staying on sidelines.

“A trespasser tried to enter former Vice President Kamala Harris’ cliffside home in Malibu on Friday evening,” the Los Angeles Times reports.

Judge Says Trump’s FEMA Order Was Illegal

September 12, 2026 at 11:07 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A federal judge said in a filing Friday that a Trump administration order for the Federal Emergency Management Agency to cut its staffing nearly in half was illegal,” CNN reports.

“In a decision that marked a critical victory for union workers in the ongoing lawsuit, U.S. District Judge Susan Illston in Northern California said the Department of Homeland Security ‘acted arbitrarily and capriciously’ when it revoked FEMA’s authority to renew contracts for the agency’s on-call disaster response teams. She also rebuked officials for deleting Signal messages that could have been used as evidence in the lawsuit.”

Republicans Fear They Have a North Carolina Problem

September 12, 2026 at 11:04 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Republicans are increasingly worried that North Carolina’s Senate race is slipping out of contention,” Politico reports.

“For months, they had argued that a post-Labor Day infusion of cash could jolt new energy into the largely stagnant but critical Senate race. But as Republican nominee Michael Whatley struggles to meaningfully close the gap against Democrat Roy Cooper in the polls, some in the party fear they’re running out of time.”

“Republicans’ concerns were apparent in side conversations, closed-door meetings and even on-stage speeches at their splashy midterm convention in Dallas.”

GOP’s Midterm Policy Agenda Is Skimpy

September 12, 2026 at 5:15 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Republicans used their midterm convention this week to ask voters to preserve their congressional majorities and let them ‘finish the job,’” Politico reports.

”But with few consensus legislative goals, it’s far from clear what job they want to finish.”

Missouri Redistricting Fight Heads to Voters

September 12, 2026 at 5:12 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Wall Street Journal: “As the high-stakes midterm elections approach, battles over redistricting and voting are intensifying nationwide. Republicans are trying to keep control of Congress, amid voter frustration with prices and an unpopular war with Iran. Democrats are seeking to gain majorities and restrain President Trump.”

“Nowhere has the fallout been greater than in Missouri, a heartland state that has large rural areas dominated by conservative Republicans—but also has urban areas, including St. Louis and Kansas City, dominated by Democrats.”

“Last year, at Trump’s urging, the GOP-led Missouri legislature redrew the state congressional boundaries mid-decade to benefit Republicans. Cleaver’s district, which for years centered on much of Kansas City and its suburbs, was set to include a swath of rural Missouri, making his chances of re-election much harder.”

“But a grassroots petition drive and legal challenges halted the plan. The Missouri Supreme Court recently ruled the state must hold a public referendum before changing district lines. Republican appeals to the U.S. Supreme Court failed, meaning the original 2022 congressional maps will be on the ballot in November—although Republicans are still trying legal strategies to change that.”

Bonus Quote of the Day

September 12, 2026 at 12:42 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“I’m not asking anybody to agree on every single policy of the administration; what I am asking you to do is to recognize the contrast with the radicals and recognize the achievements of the last 18 months.”

— Vice President Vance, quoted by Rolling Stone.

Trump Loses the Other Strait

September 12, 2026 at 12:26 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The Atlantic: “As recently as last week, the Iran war appeared to be turning slightly in America’s favor. The Houthis—the Yemen-based militia that is Iran’s most formidable remaining ally in the Middle East—were under pressure from their local rivals, and the Saudi air force was pounding them with air strikes. The president of Yemen’s internationally recognized government issued a triumphant statement declaring that the Houthis’ miscalculations ‘will open the door to their complete collapse.’ With their Houthi partners wounded, Iran’s leaders would have one more reason to back down and agree to Donald Trump’s terms.”

“Yesterday morning, those delusions drifted away like smoke as Houthi forces broke through their enemies’ defenses and seized the towns and islands around the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, one of the most important maritime choke points in the world.”

Trump Catastrophically Miscalculated in Georgia

September 12, 2026 at 11:55 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Michelle Cottle: “If Mr. Ossoff winds up in the White House, Mr. Trump will have largely himself to blame. The president didn’t just help him win his seat. He also spent years undermining the Republican Party in Georgia, sowing internecine discord, championing losing candidates and destroying conservative voters’ faith in the electoral system.”

“With impressive, if unintentional, drive, Mr. Trump has fostered the conditions that transformed Mr. Ossoff from a charmingly nerdy, vaguely awkward, low-key freshman lawmaker into a political star.”

Al-Qaeda Regroups in Afghanistan

September 12, 2026 at 11:23 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Al-Qaeda’s plans for the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks took root in dusty, mud-walled compounds in Afghanistan that served for years as terrorist training camps,” the Washington Post reports.

“A quarter-century later — despite decades of U.S. military and counterterrorism operations aimed at eradicating those strongholds — al-Qaeda is again operating training camps in Afghanistan, according to U.S. and Western intelligence officials and a United Nations organization responsible for monitoring terror networks.”

Everything Trump Wants to Do Causes Inflation

September 12, 2026 at 10:55 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

David Graham: “A paradox of this moment is that inflation is a big reason for Trump’s cratering approval and his party’s sinking odds in the midterm elections, but nearly every one of his signature policy ideas is inflationary. The basic challenge is not novel to this president—voters hate inflation, yet most anti-inflation measures the government can take will hurt the economy, which voters also hate.”

“But Trump’s strategy seems to be to commit to new proposals that would drive up costs.”

In Praise of the Democrats’ Disarray

September 12, 2026 at 10:53 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The Economist: “As the midterms approach, America’s two main parties are conducting opposite experiments. Republicans march in lockstep behind Donald Trump, who summoned his troops to Dallas this week to celebrate his awesomeness…”

“Democrats, by contrast, are bickering over their leaders, strategy and ideology. The party has no standard-bearer, while socialists who once flitted around its edge are trying to become its heart. On the campaign trail, Republican discipline will beat Democratic chaos. Or so Republicans hope.”

“But political parties are not armies; their members’ duty is not merely to obey. They should debate, adapt and attract talent. They should be open to new leaders and new ideas. That is especially true after the political transformation wrought by Mr Trump. By those measures the unified Republican Party looks increasingly unhealthy, whereas the disunited Democrats may be engaged in the messy work of renewal.”

Kevin Warsh Faces Fed Credibility Test

September 12, 2026 at 10:38 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

CNBC: “Hotter-than-expected inflation data has turned next week’s Federal Reserve meeting into a defining test for Chairman Kevin Warsh. His choice now is whether to raise interest rates, or look like he isn’t in control of the central bank he leads.”
