Trump Blames Everyone But Himself

September 12, 2024 at 12:20 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Charlie Sykes: “At his rallies, Trump can get away with his signature lies and tantrums of grievance—and with not saying much at all about actual policy plans. In his softball interviews with fawning right-wing hosts, he can ramble and lie without fear of being challenged. At the presidential debate, though, it didn’t work. So he has decided to blame everybody but himself…”

“But it wasn’t the moderators or the network, or even Harris, who forced Trump to begin ranting that ‘they’re eating the dogs!’ That was all Trump.”

September 12, 2024 at 11:23 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A day after endorsing Kamala Harris for president and urging her fans to vote regardless of whom they supported, Taylor Swift reiterated that call in her acceptance speech at the Video Music Awards last night,” the New York Times reports.

“He is like one of those big balloons when you stick a pin in and it swirls around the room until it comes down to nothing.”

— Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), talking about Donald Trump on CNN.

Are Polls Underestimating Trump Again?

September 12, 2024 at 10:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Larry Sabato’s Crystal Ball: “Swing state polls show an incredibly close race in our 7 Toss-up presidential states right now.”

“Final polling did generally overstate Democrats in both the 2016 and 2020 elections in these states, with Wisconsin standing out. Keep that in mind as polling shows Kamala Harris holding up a little bit better in the Badger State than elsewhere.”

“If polls are understating Donald Trump again, he of course is in a great position to win given how competitive he already is in the core swing states. But there are good reasons to believe that he is not being understated this time.”

The Craziest Debate Line Ever?

September 12, 2024 at 9:57 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Jake Tapper told viewers on CNN that Donald Trump’s “more than a little bit racist lie” about Haitian migrants eating pets in Springfield, Ohio “must be the craziest subject to ever rear its head in American presidential debate.”

Waiting for the Post-Debate Polls?

September 12, 2024 at 8:55 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The first polls conducted fully after this week’s presidential debate should start trickling in soon. But these aren’t the polls to pay much attention to if you want to know if the debate changed the trajectory of the race.

Young Women Are Becoming More Liberal

September 12, 2024 at 8:53 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Gallup: “Young women’s stances on several other issues — including the death penalty, healthcare policy, labor unions, taxes, government regulation and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict — have become moderately more liberal, while their views on defense spending and a few others show little change.”

“Young men have also moved closer to the liberal positions on most issues, just not as markedly as young women have.”

Mike Johnson Gets Squeezed

September 12, 2024 at 8:33 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Speaker Mike Johnson is in an extraordinarily unenviable position,” Punchbowl News reports.

“More than 10 months into his speakership, Johnson finds himself in the same pickle that’s plagued his GOP predecessors. For Johnson — a real movement conservative who has a good relationship with former President Donald Trump — the experience as a Republican speaker was supposed to be different. Yet it’s exactly the same.”

“With just 19 days until the federal funding deadline, Johnson is pushing a bill that most lawmakers and Congress watchers understand is dead on arrival — a six-month stopgap package with the SAVE Act attached to it. The stated objective is to ensure election integrity, which Johnson termed a ‘righteous’ pursuit and Trump says is needed to save the country. The practical objective is to try to establish a House GOP negotiating position in the face of unified Democratic and White House opposition.”

“Johnson’s detractors are aplenty — especially inside the House Republican leadership, where the speaker’s seemingly earnest determination is being met quietly with sneers, jeers and head shaking.”

European Central Bank Cuts Rates Again

September 12, 2024 at 8:24 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The European Central Bank lowered interest rates by a quarter point, its second cut in three months, offering a boost to the eurozone’s faltering economy and widening a policy gap with the Federal Reserve, which is expected to start cutting rates next week,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

Pro-Ukraine Republicans Downplay Trump’s Comments

September 12, 2024 at 8:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Republicans who support Ukraine downplayed Donald Trump’s refusal to say whether he wants Kyiv to win the war, Punchbowl News reports.

Said Sen. Markwayne Mullin (R-OK): “The last thing you do in negotiations is show your cards. So if you’re going to negotiate a peace deal, you’ve got to negotiate from a neutral position. Otherwise, they’re never going to come to the table.”

Harris Launches Post-Debate Ad

September 12, 2024 at 7:48 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The Harris campaign is launching its first ad following the presidential debate, highlighting what it calls “two very different visions” for the country and Vice President Harris’ plan to create a “new way forward,” Axios reports.

Trump Allies Do Damage Control After Debate

September 12, 2024 at 7:36 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Donald Trump is equivocating over the possibility of a second debate with Kamala Harris after his dud display in their first showdown prompted his team and conservative media allies to mount a frantic cleanup operation,” CNN reports.

“It’s far too early to say whether the tangle in Philadelphia substantially changed the race as Harris beseeches remaining movable voters in swing states to ditch the chaos of the Trump era. But in the aftermath of Tuesday’s debate, both campaigns are surveying the impact of a critical clash before more than 60 million viewers eight weeks from Election Day.”

Anatomy of a Trump Conspiracy Theory

September 12, 2024 at 7:32 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Axios: “It should come as no surprise that Trump, the country’s chief election denier and a champion of the anti-Obama ‘birther’ movement, is susceptible to conspiracy theories.”

“But as Trump has gotten older, the rabbit holes have grown deeper and more radical — a backdrop to his distrust of the media and refusal to accept that he lost the 2020 election.”

“The result — on display as he falsely claimed immigrants are eating people’s pets in Springfield, Ohio — is a candidate who’s become a walking liability for his own campaign.”

CNN: Trump is drowning in the misinformation swamp he helped create.
