Harris to Release New Economic Policy Plans

September 3, 2024 at 10:50 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Vice President Kamala Harris is expected to unveil new proposals meant to boost small businesses and entrepreneurs ahead of a campaign speech Wednesday in New Hampshire,” the Washington Post reports.

“With days until her first debate with former president Donald Trump, Harris is aiming to draw a contrast with the GOP nominee’s calls for a lower corporate tax rate, the people said. Advisers to the campaign have also discussed including plans to bolster the safety net, such as through child-care or paid leave expansions, alongside tax proposals, although it is unclear whether those or other policies will be in Wednesday’s announcement.”

September 3, 2024 at 10:48 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A convicted murderer who was pardoned by Donald Trump strangled his wife after his release, Popular Information reports.

Trump’s commutation of Jamie Davidson’s life sentence was controversial at the time because of the severity of Davidson’s offense and the atypical process that led to his release.

Democrats Ask Trump If He Illegally Took $10 Million

September 3, 2024 at 10:45 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Democratic leaders on the House Oversight Committee released a letter Tuesday asking former president Donald Trump if he ever illegally received money from the government of Egypt, and whether money from Cairo played a role in a $10 million infusion into his 2016 run for president,” the Washington Post reports.

“Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD), the ranking Democrat on the committee, and Rep. Robert Garcia (D-CA), the top Democrat on its subcommittee for national security, the border and foreign affairs, wrote to Trump that they were making the request as a result of a Washington Post article published last month. The article revealed details of a secret Justice Department investigation during Trump’s presidency into whether he took an illegal campaign contribution from Egypt.”

September 3, 2024 at 9:40 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“FBI agents early Tuesday arrested a former deputy chief of staff to Gov. Kathy Hochul and her husband at their home on a cul-de-sac on Long Island’s North Shore,” the New York Times reports.

“Federal prosecutors in Brooklyn are expected to ask a judge to unseal an indictment against the aide, Linda Sun, 40, and her husband, Chris Hu, 41, later in the day.”

Kushner Defends Taking $2 Billion Investment from Saudis

September 3, 2024 at 9:34 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Jared Kushner “defended his business dealings after leaving government with the Saudi crown prince who was implicated in the 2018 killing of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi,” CBS News reports.

“After Kushner left the White House, he started a private equity firm that received a reported $2 billion investment from the sovereign wealth fund controlled by Prince Mohammed, drawing scrutiny from Democrats.”

Said Kushner: “I know the person who I dealt with. I think he’s a visionary leader. I think what he’s done in that region is transformational.”

Of Khashoggi’s death, he added: “I understand why people, you know, are upset about that. I think that what happened there was absolutely horrific. But again, our job was to represent America, and to try to push forward things in America.”

Harris to Transfer $25 Million to Down-Ballot Races

September 3, 2024 at 9:16 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign and the Democratic National Committee plan to transfer nearly $25 million to support down-ballot Democratic candidates in state and federal races this year, a significant boost to those efforts following record fundraising for her campaign this summer,” the Washington Post reports.

Politico: “The funding in part reflects the Harris operation’s ability to spread money around after record fundraising over the past six weeks. But it is also a recognition of the importance of this year’s down-ballot races — which overlap with many of the swaths of the country that could decide the presidential election, and whose outcomes will substantially affect how Harris, or former President Donald Trump, will be able to govern next year.”

A Dozen Times Trump Pushed to Prosecute His Enemies

September 3, 2024 at 8:45 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Just Security: “The cascade of election coverage, commentary and speculation about how Donald Trump might use the power of the presidency to retaliate against his perceived political enemies has overlooked important context: Trump has done just that, while he was president, at least a dozen times.”

“What follows is a chronological list of specific instances in which the former president in fact used the Department of Justice and other levers of government power — including by directly, publicly or privately pressuring of cials — to target his chosen political targets.”

“The record includes several cases in which he apparently succeeded more than might be imagined or remembered.”

Trump Has Been Telling the Same Lies for Years

September 3, 2024 at 8:39 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Daniel Dale: “Trump’s lying is most exceptional in its relentlessness, a never-ending avalanche of wrongness that can bury even the most devoted fact-checkers. But it’s also notable for its repetitiveness. He has found his hits, and he’ll keep playing them no matter how many times they are debunked.”

“As Trump enters the post-Labor Day sprint of his 2024 campaign for the presidency, his commentary is filled with many of the same false claims he made as president from 2017 to 2021. He’s even repeating some of the false claims he used during his 2016 presidential campaign.”

Can Democrats Stop the ‘Tax Doom Loop’?

September 3, 2024 at 8:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “It goes like this: Republicans pass huge tax cuts that are, at first, only temporary. By the time the tax cuts are set to end, Americans have become used to owing less to the government. Hesitant to raise taxes, Democrats join with Republicans to continue many of the cuts indefinitely.”

“To liberals, this cycle is to blame for a range of social and economic ills. Widening inequality. Ballooning deficits. A federal government without the resources to pay for a progressive agenda.”

“And next year, they hope, is their chance to finally stop it.”

J.D. Vance Tries a ‘Come-at-Me’ Strategy

September 3, 2024 at 7:36 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Despite having to defend past comments, Sen. JD Vance (R-OH) has signed up for a tough conversation with the New York Times‘ “The Interview” podcast, Axios reports.

It’s part of a “come-at-me” media strategy by Vance, who has faced constant questions about “childless cat ladies” and other previous statements about women and parents.

Chinese ‘Spamouflage’ Network Mimics Americans

September 3, 2024 at 7:09 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Associated Press: “As voters prepare to cast their ballots this fall, China has been making its own plans, cultivating networks of fake social media users designed to mimic Americans. Whoever or wherever he really is, Harlan is a small part of a larger effort by U.S. adversaries to use social media to influence and upend America’s political debate.”

“The account was traced back to Spamouflage, a Chinese disinformation group, by analysts at Graphika, a New York-based firm that tracks online networks. Known to online researchers for several years, Spamouflage earned its moniker through its habit of spreading large amounts of seemingly unrelated content alongside disinformation.”

NPR: China is pushing divisive political messages online using fake U.S. voters.

Quote of the Day

September 3, 2024 at 7:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Of course people get motivated about voting against somebody. But when they’re as motivated or more motivated about voting for somebody, there’s magic there.”

— David Plouffe, quoted by Politico.

How Harris Can Help Trump Hurt Himself in the Debate

September 3, 2024 at 6:31 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

James Carville: “If there’s one thing Americans love, it’s a train wreck. That’s why we’re addicted to ‘Dance Moms’ and the ‘Real Housewives’ franchise. Just over two months ago, we witnessed one in real time, and it led to the humane revolt against a sitting president’s re-election campaign by his own party. I guarantee a lot of voters are salivating for a second round. Only this time, Mr. Trump must be the train wreck, and it’s on Ms. Harris to lay the tracks.”

“I’ve always believed that one good joke is worth 100 fact-checks. By and large, Ms. Harris is diverging from the normal fear-provoking way of going about Mr. Trump; instead of building him up as a threat to America, she’s getting voters chuckling and nodding by saying of the former president and his crew, ‘They are out of their minds.’ People smile when they think a politician has her opponent’s number, and they like that she’s calling him weird and unserious and painting a broader picture of Mr. Trump as a tired old tapestry. And we already have some indication her team is prepping her to do just this.”

“In the Sept. 10 debate, Ms. Harris must enable exactly what his campaign is scared to death of: letting Trump be Trump. She should let him talk over her. Not just let him but goad him into spouting insane conspiracy theories about the previous election. She should use her sense of humor at key moments to get under his skin and show he’s not getting to her. And she should welcome the personal attacks as a badge of honor. And each time, no matter how many times he does it, respond with this refrain: It’s the same old tired playbook, and I’m focused on a new way forward.”
