A new Reuters/Ipsos poll finds Kamala Harris leading Donald Teump nationally among registered voters, 45% to 41%.

Associated Press: “It was at an Aug. 9 fundraiser hosted by former Georgia Sen. Kelly Loeffler that fellow Republican Lindsey Graham approached Gov. Brian Kemp. Graham, the South Carolina senator and longtime confidant of the former president, was already planning to attend the fundraiser.”

“Now, Graham had a renewed purpose: to try to ease years of tensions between Trump and Kemp that endangered the GOP’s chances in a crucial 2024 battleground.”

“Graham and Kemp met privately at Loeffler’s house. And over the coming weeks, say Graham and others familiar with the matter, allies of both men arranged the two-part détente that played out publicly last Thursday to the surprise of many political watchers.”

“Donald Trump’s promised tariff on imports could hit U.S. voters where it hurts — their gas tanks,” Politico reports.

“Trump has called for imposing tariffs of up to 20 percent on all imported goods should he be elected. That would likely affect at least half, if not all, of the 8 million barrels of crude oil that the United States imports, market analysts said, in what could become an especially politically explosive example of his tariffs’ impact on consumers’ wallets. Such a move could also blow up a trade treaty with the nation’s No. 1 supplier of imported oil: Canada.”

Michael Powell: “For Trump, defiling what is sacred in our civic culture borders on a pastime. Peacefully transferring power to the next president, treating political adversaries with at least rudimentary grace, honoring those soldiers wounded and disfigured in service of our country—Trump long ago walked roughshod over all these norms. Before he tried to overturn a national election, he mocked his opponents in the crudest terms and demeaned dead soldiers as ‘suckers.'”

“But the former president outdid himself this week, when he attended a wreath-laying ceremony honoring 13 American soldiers killed in a suicide bombing in Kabul during the final havoc-marked hours of the American withdrawal. Trump laid three wreaths and put hand over heart; that is a time-honored privilege of presidents. Trump, as is his wont, went further. He walked to a burial site in Section 60 and posed with the family of a fallen soldier, grinning broadly and giving a thumbs-up for his campaign photographer and videographer.”

“Donald Trump, in his third White House bid, has sought to reignite the cultural battles over education that erupted throughout the country in recent years, and on Friday, he will appear before the conservative parents group that helped spark the fight,” CNN reports.

“Trump’s visit to Moms for Liberty’s annual convention in Washington is the latest sign of the organization’s clout in the Republican Party just three years into its formation. The former president’s K-12 agenda closely adheres to Moms for Liberty’s intense efforts to ban the teaching and discussion of certain topics related to sexuality, gender and race.”

New York Times: “The CNN interview, of course, was mostly a test of Ms. Harris. Mr. Walz has made it abundantly clear, in the last three and a half weeks, that he does not need to be the center of attention — a defining feature of his candidacy is a lack of naked personal ambition, paired with effusive enthusiasm for his running mate.”

“He appears happy to be the guy sitting off to the side, just out of frame, perfectly content to be ignored — he did not speak for long stretches of the interview — but also happy to help.”

Dan Pfeiffer: “Two related things happened in the 2024 campaign yesterday. First, a bevy of new polls came out, which showed Vice President Harris taking the lead nationally and in the swing states.”

“Second, Trump swerved out of his way to rewrite his position on abortion. At a rally, Trump said that his administration would protect IVF treatments and mandate that government or insurance companies pay for such treatments. Notably, neither Trump nor his campaign offered a single detail on how this would be accomplished…”

“Later, in an interview with NBC, Trump implied that he would vote for an amendment in Florida guaranteeing access to abortion up until the point of fetal viability.”

“Now, this is a dramatic shift considering Trump is the person most responsible for overturning Roe v. Wade. At every opportunity, Trump brags about his role in stripping a constitutional right from more than half the country.”

Los Angeles Times: “If Trump and Republican vice presidential nominee JD Vance were to succeed in remaking the federal workforce in the way they have described, it would be the most radical reconfiguration of the U.S. government in 140 years.”

“Critics, including nonpartisan analysts, fear Trump’s proposal to replace thousands of civil servants with his loyalists would resurrect something like the 19th century “spoils” system, which Congress scrapped in the late 1800s due to rampant incompetence and cronyism.”

“The U.S. operated for much of the 1800s on the understanding that individuals won jobs with the government not by proving their expertise, but by having connections to presidents and their parties.”

“Congress moved to eliminate the spoils system in 1883, about 18 months after a disgruntled job-seeker assassinated the man he believed owed him a government appointment — James A. Garfield, the 20th president of the United States.”

“Kamala Harris’ campaign is launching a bus tour in Palm Beach, Fla., with its surrogates to promote access to reproductive rights,” The Hill reports.

“The ‘Fighting for Reproductive Freedom’ bus tour is set to start on Tuesday in former President Trump’s hometown. Surrogates from second gentleman Doug Emhoff, the first lady of Minnesota Gwen Walz, Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), and Harris campaign manager Julie Chavez Rodriguez, among others, will be on the tour.”

“The tour will make at least 50 stops in red, blue and battleground states in the next couple of months, the campaign announced.”

Eighty-one percent of Americans in a new ABC News/Ipsos poll say that regardless of which candidate they support, they are prepared to accept the outcome of the election.

Fewer, but still 68%, see Kamala Harris as prepared to accept the outcome. Just 29% say the same about Donald Trump.

“Democrats in Congress are scrambling for ways to publicly dredge up as much information as possible about an altercation between Trump staffers and an Arlington National Cemetery official,” Axios reports.

“The incident has been dogging the ex-president’s candidacy this week, with one House Armed Services Committee member telling Axios he’s trying to get his panel to formally investigate the matter.”

“Kamala Harris’ rally in Savannah, Georgia, was the first time a general election presidential candidate had campaigned in the city since the 1990s,” NOTUS reports.

“Democratic operatives say it was a signal: Winning Georgia isn’t only about Atlanta this time.”

“As the presidential candidates eye a busy Labor Day weekend in Pennsylvania, the Harris campaign will be opening its 50th campaign office in the state, dwarfing the Trump campaign’s presence,” Penn Live reports.

“Besides the advantage in campaign offices, there are now more than 350 staffers in Pennsylvania, according to the Harris campaign.”
