Harris Surges Ahead of Trump

August 29, 2024 at 8:01 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new USA Today/Suffolk University poll finds Kamala Harris leading Donald Trump nationally among likely voters, 48% to 43%.

“The findings reflect an eight-point turnaround in the presidential race from late June, when Trump had led President Joe Biden in the survey by nearly four points.”

“The vice president’s small lead was fueled by big shifts among some key demographic groups traditionally crucial for Democrats, including Hispanic and Black voters and young people. Among those with annual incomes of less than $20,000, in the biggest change, a three-point Trump edge over Biden in June has become a 23-point Harris advantage over Trump in August.”

August 29, 2024 at 7:57 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“In an election where nothing can be taken for granted, Democrats are hoping their vice presidential candidate can help lock up an electoral vote that’s up for grabs in Nebraska come November,” NOTUS reports.

“They’re betting that Tim Walz, who was raised there, can help counteract some of the “stereotypes” that might be associated with Vice President Kamala Harris, who is from California and might be perceived as ‘overly liberal’ or ‘out of touch’ by Nebraska voters.”

  • Pennsylvania: Trump 47%, Harris 46%
  • Wisconsin: Harris 49%, Trump 45%

It’s worth noting that Tony Fabrizio is the Trump campaign’s lead pollster.

Democrats Drive Surge in Election Enthusiasm

August 29, 2024 at 7:48 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Gallup: “Americans’ enthusiasm about voting in this year’s election has surged in recent months, with 69% of U.S. adults now saying they are ‘more enthusiastic than usual’ about voting. This is up from 54% in March.”

“Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents are largely driving the surge in enthusiasm nationally. In March, 55% of Democrats and Democratic leaners said they were more enthusiastic than usual about voting; now, 78% are. Republicans and Republican leaners, who held a slight edge in enthusiasm in March, now trail Democrats by a significant margin, with their current 64% enthusiasm score up slightly from 59% in the spring.”

24 Hours of Trump

August 29, 2024 at 5:50 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “Donald Trump amplified a vulgar joke about Vice President Kamala Harris performing a sex act. He falsely accused her of a staging a coup to secure the Democratic nomination and faulted her without evidence for a security lapse that enabled a rogue gunman to try to assassinate him. He shared a manipulated online image of Bill Gates in an orange jumpsuit and a call for Barack Obama to face a ‘military tribunal.’ He promoted explicit tributes to the QAnon conspiracy theory. He hawked digital trading cards in an online infomercial along with pieces of his debate night suit… His campaign feuded publicly with Arlington National Cemetery over their visit.”

“And that was just in the span of 24 hours.”

Democrats Try New Strategy to Win Back Latinos

August 29, 2024 at 5:46 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “Both Democrats and Republicans acknowledge that attracting Latino voters will be key to winning the White House this year. Latinos remain one of the fastest-growing groups of voters. They are disproportionately young and have less partisan loyalty than many other groups.”

“So it is especially notable that Democrats, four years after hemorrhaging Latino support, have not been offering a slew of overt appeals. Rather than ads filled with promises about immigration reform and Spanish phrases, Democrats have been focusing on economic messages, talking about the cost of housing and medication, or relentlessly hammering the promise of the American dream. In short, they are courting Latino voters by treating them like everyone else.”

House GOP Braces for Pre-Election Spending Drama

August 29, 2024 at 5:31 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Most House Republicans are anxious that a high-profile spending fight in September would set them up for failure just weeks before an election. Conservatives want to force one anyway,” Politico reports.

“Congress needs to pass a funding bill before Oct. 1 to avoid a government shutdown, a prospect that has caused conflict in the past year but should have been fairly straightforward this time. That’s because most Republicans and Democrats generally acknowledge they’ll need a short-term patch that keeps spending levels steady, known as a continuing resolution or a CR, to avert the shutdown in time.”

Veterans ‘Furious’ at Trump Campaign

August 28, 2024 at 9:31 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Some veterans reacted with alarm to reports of an altercation between a member of Donald Trump’s entourage and a top official at Arlington National Cemetery on Monday, with a retired Army general calling the incident ‘repugnant,'” USA Today reports.

“The incident occurred when a member of Trump’s team pushed his way into recording in a part of the cemetery, known as Section 60, where photography is prohibited.”

“Video from Section 60, where recently buried U.S. service members are interred, later appeared in a Trump campaign Tik Tok in which he criticizes President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, his Democratic rival for the presidency.”

Said Fred Wellman, a 22-year Army combat veteran: “Donald Trump has no right to use our most hallowed ground for his political aims. For a lot of us, and I’m not the only one, people are aptly furious.”

August 28, 2024 at 8:37 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) said Vice President Kamala Harris “can go to hell” over the Biden administration’s handling of the 2021 withdrawal from Afghanistan, CBS News reports.

He added: “She can go to hell.”

Trump Photos at Grave Dismay Family of Soldier

August 28, 2024 at 8:30 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The family of a Green Beret who died by suicide after serving roughly a dozen combat tours and is buried at Arlington National Cemetery expressed concern on Wednesday that Donald Trump’s campaign had filmed his gravesite without permission as Mr. Trump stood in an area where campaign photography isn’t allowed,” the New York Times reports.

“Relatives of Master Sgt. Andrew Marckesano issued their statement two days after Mr. Trump’s visit, which also included a confrontation between members of the Trump campaign and an Arlington employee.”

“The former president’s campaign took video in a heavily restricted section of the cemetery known as Section 60, which is largely reserved for the fallen veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.”

Trump Dishonors Fallen Soldiers Again

August 28, 2024 at 7:57 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Charlie Sykes: “On Monday, Donald Trump visited the sacred ground of Arlington National Cemetery, where many of America’s war dead are buried, and posed for photos.”

“In the strangest of these pictures, the former president is smiling and giving a thumbs-up by the grave of a Marine. It’s an image of a man who has no idea how to behave around fallen heroes.”

Washington Post: How a Trump visit sparked turmoil at America’s most sacred cemetery.
