July 23, 2025 at 6:01 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A House subcommittee on Wednesday voted to subpoena the Department of Justice for files in the sex trafficking investigation into Jeffrey Epstein after Democrats successfully goaded GOP lawmakers to defy Trump and Republican leadership to support the action,” the AP reports.

“Democrats on a subcommittee of the powerful House Committee on Oversight made a motion for the subpoena Wednesday afternoon, just hours before the House was scheduled to end its July work session and depart Washington for a monthlong break.”

“Three Republicans on the panel voted with Democrats for the subpoena, sending it through on an 8-2 vote tally.”

What Else Does Elon Musk Know?

July 23, 2025 at 4:32 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

In early June, just after a very public falling out with Donald Trump, Elon Musk made a stunning allegation: “Trump is in the Epstein files. That is the real reason they have not been made public.”

He deleted the tweet two days later — but the Wall Street Journal has now confirmed its substance.

Roy Cooper Will Run for Senate in North Carolina

July 23, 2025 at 3:42 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Roy Cooper is expected to announce his campaign for the North Carolina Senate as soon as Monday,” Politico reports.

“The popular, former two-term governor’s entrance into the Senate race — for a seat Republican Sen. Thom Tillis is leaving open with his announcement last month that he won’t seek reelection — is likely to transform the Senate race into the most competitive of 2026.”

Trump Was Told His Name Is in the Epstein Files

July 23, 2025 at 3:27 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“When Justice Department officials reviewed what Attorney General Pam Bondi called a ‘truckload’ of documents related to Jeffrey Epstein earlier this year, they discovered that Donald Trump’s name appeared multiple times,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“They told the president at the meeting that the files contained what officials felt was unverified hearsay about many people, including Trump, who had socialized with Epstein in the past… One of the officials familiar with the documents said they contain hundreds of other names.”

“They also told Trump that senior Justice Department officials didn’t plan to release any more documents related to the investigation of the convicted sex offender because the material contained child pornography and victims’ personal information…”

“The meeting set the stage for the high-profile review to come to an end.”

Extra Bonus Quote of the Day

July 23, 2025 at 3:03 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“I’ve watched this party pour $110 million into Jaime Harrison’s campaign against Lindsey Graham. That was a fool’s errand. How many Michigan state Senate seats could we have picked up for that?”

— Democratic strategist Paul Begala, quoted by Politico.

Hegseth’s Signal Chats Were Based on Classified Info

July 23, 2025 at 3:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Pentagon’s independent watchdog has received evidence that messages from Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s Signal account previewing a U.S. bombing campaign in Yemen derived from a classified email labeled ‘SECRET/NOFORN,'” the Washington Post reports.

“The revelation appears to contradict longstanding claims by the Trump administration that no classified information was divulged in unclassified group chats that critics have called a significant security breach.”

U.S. and Europe Closing In on Trade Deal

July 23, 2025 at 2:45 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The U.S. is reportedly closing in on a trade agreement that would impose 15% tariffs on goods from the European Union,” Axios reports.

“The framework — details of which were reported by Reuters and the Financial Times on Wednesday — would be the latest that implements hefty tariffs on a key ally.”

Judge Denies Request to Unseal Epstein Transcripts

July 23, 2025 at 2:24 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A federal judge in Florida on Wednesday denied a request from the Trump administration to release grand jury transcripts from an investigation into the disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein, stymying efforts by President Trump to dispel a storm of criticism from many of his supporters,” the New York Times reports.

A Busted Norm Bites Back at Trump

July 23, 2025 at 2:14 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Most modern presidents have kept the Justice Department at arm’s length from the White House.

But the erosion of that norm is now central to a growing controversy, after the Justice Department abruptly announced it found “no further evidence” to justify additional investigations—or the release of the Jeffrey Epstein files.

Extra Bonus Quote of the Day

July 23, 2025 at 2:13 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“It seems as though the Trump administration is willing to declassify anything and everything except the Epstein files.”

— Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA), quoted by the New York Times, on Tulsi Gabbard’s release of documents she claimed undermined the conclusion of intelligence agencies that Russia favored Trump in the 2016 election.

Trump’s Retribution Campaign Takes Another Turn

July 23, 2025 at 2:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “Displaying a willingness to weaponize the federal government in ways that were as novel as they were audacious, he took on a wide variety of individuals and institutions — from law firms and universities to journalists and federal bureaucrats — that he felt had crossed him, failed to fall in line or embodied ideological values that he rejected.”

“But on Tuesday Mr. Trump reverted to earlier form, resurfacing — in a remarkably unfiltered and aggressive rant — his grievances against Mr. Obama, prominent figures in past administrations and others he associated with what he considers a long campaign of persecution dating back to the 2016 election.”

The Sick Joke of Jeffrey Epstein

July 23, 2025 at 1:46 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Tara Palmeri, who investigated Jeffrey Epstein for years, has a great description of what I think attracted Donald Trump to him.

“The whole operation was designed to normalize the depravity. To lure powerful men with the promise of sex and secrecy. To make it funny. To make it cool. And then to hold them hostage with it.”
