Trump’s Epstein Headache Isn’t Going Away
Playbook: “At what should be the height of his political powers — having racked up signature wins in enacting his sprawling GOP megabill, bending U.S. allies to his will on defense spending, launching a successful and limited attack on Iran with no meaningful reprisals on U.S. forces — President Donald Trump is instead facing a fast-metastasizing MAGA rebellion over his administration’s handling of the files from the criminal investigation into Jeffrey Epstein.”
“To a degree we have truly not seen over the past decade of Trump as a national political figure, his movement seems genuinely fractured.”
Obama Tells Democrats to ‘Toughen Up’
Former President Barack Obama issued a call to action for Democrats at a private fundraiser in New Jersey on Friday evening, urging those frustrated by the state of the country under President Donald Trump to “stand up for the things that you think are right,” CNN reports.
Said Obama: “I think it’s going to require a little bit less navel-gazing and a little less whining and being in fetal positions. And it’s going to require Democrats to just toughen up.”
He added: “You know, don’t tell me you’re a Democrat, but you’re kind of disappointed right now, so you’re not doing anything. No, now is exactly the time that you get in there and do something.”
EU Warns Trump’s Tariffs Are Danger to Transatlantic Trade
“Donald Trump’s proposed 30% tariff on European Union goods is ‘effectively prohibitive’ to transatlantic trade and could warrant retaliation, the bloc’s chief negotiator said,” Bloomberg reports.
“Briefing reporters in Brussels on Monday before a gathering of trade ministers, Maros Sefcovic warned that counter measures may be on the table as an option to strike back against the US president’s levies.”
CNBC: What Trump’s 30% tariff threat means for the European Union — in charts.
Trump’s Megabill Creates Budget Nightmare for States
“President Donald Trump’s landmark legislation is driving a giant hole in governors’ budgets in a midterm year,” Politico reports.
“By slashing health care and food assistance for low-income Americans, Republicans in Washington are passing tremendous costs onto the states, leaving local leaders from both parties grasping for ways to make up for billions in lost federal dollars. The cuts are already threatening to endanger governors’ education, public safety and disaster relief funds.”
Three Ways Trump Might Defuse the Epstein Mess
“President Trump isn’t ready to course-correct over how his administration has handled the Jeffrey Epstein evidence,” Axios reports.
“But officials and advisers are considering at least three ways Trump could try to defuse an issue that, for the first time, has put him crosswise with his online MAGA base.”
- “Appoint a special counsel or investigative team to review the Epstein case top to bottom, and produce a report.”
- “Remove redactions to already released documents related to the late sex offender, perhaps at the direction of the special counsel or investigative team.”
- “Petition courts that have sealed Epstein-related records to unseal them in cases in which the administration can’t.”

How China’s Military Is Flexing Its Power in the Pacific
“China’s military is extending its reach deeper into the Pacific, sending ships and aircraft into new territory in a push that has spurred the U.S. to strengthen defenses and alliances in the region,” the Wall Street Journal reports.
“Beijing has long resented what it sees as interference by the U.S. and its allies in its traditional sphere of influence in the Asia-Pacific region. Now, it is asserting itself more aggressively in its backyard while also pushing well beyond longstanding geographical limits of its military.”
Public Broadcasters Brace for Vote on Sharp Funding Cut
New York Times: “Congress is expected to vote by the deadline on Friday on a White House proposal, known as a rescission package. It would pull back more than $500 million per year in federal funding that is set to go to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, the government-backed company that supports public radio and TV stations across the country.”
“Last week, President Trump urged legislators to support the cuts, and threatened to withhold his support for any Republican lawmakers who oppose the proposal.”
Trump’s Tariffs Are Here to Stay
“President Trump’s on-again, off-again tariffs have prompted investors to bet that he will ‘always chicken out’ and given businesses and foreign leaders hope that the leader of the world’s largest economy will ultimately back down from his threats if they prove too economically disruptive,” the New York Times reports.
“Events of the past week have cast serious doubt on that bet. As Mr. Trump renews trade threats against more than two dozen trading partners, he is once again proving his fondness for tariffs, and embracing import taxes in a way that no other president has since the Great Depression.”
Government Is Retreating From Student Lending
“The federal government is retreating from its central role in financing higher education,” the Wall Street Journal reports.
“President Trump’s big tax-and-spending law includes new restrictions on how much students can borrow and how they repay. The provisions begin to reverse the government’s near takeover of the $1.7 trillion student lending market over the past six decades.”
“As a result, families are reassessing the costs and risks of college. Many are likely to turn to private lenders, which typically charge higher interest rates and require creditworthy cosigners. Those lenders recently accounted for some 8% of outstanding loans.”
Megabill Might Not Be a Silver Bullet for Democrats
“Democrats are banking on backlash to Republicans’ Medicaid cuts to boost them in next year’s midterms. There’s just one problem: The cuts haven’t happened yet,” Politico reports.
“Republicans delayed work requirements until 2027 and financing changes until 2028. They also frontloaded their One Big Beautiful Bill Act with tax breaks that voters are likely to see sooner.”
Biden Says He Orally Made Clemency Decisions
“Former President Joe Biden is escalating his battle against Republican claims that he might not have been in control of high-profile clemency decisions issued under his name at the end of his term and, more generally, that his cognitive state impaired his functioning in office,” the New York Times reports.
“Mr. Biden said that he had orally granted all the pardons and commutations issued at the end of his term, calling President Trump and other Republicans ‘liars’ for claiming his aides had used an autopen to do so without his authorization.”
Trump to Send Patriot Missiles to Ukraine
“President Donald Trump said the United States will send Patriot air defense missiles to Ukraine that will be reimbursed for by the European Union, offering critical help to Kyiv as it battles an onslaught of Russian drone attacks,” USA Today reports.
Said Trump: “We will send them Patriots, which they desperately need. Putin really surprised a lot of people. He talks nice and then he bombs everybody in the evening… there’s a little bit of a problem there. I don’t like it.”
Trump Says Epstein Files Were Written by Obama, Clinton
In a Truth Social post, President Trump acknowledged the existence of the Jeffrey Epstein files and even suggested that he had read them.
He then insisted that the files were written by “by Obama, Crooked Hillary, Comey, Brennan, and the Losers and Criminals of the Biden Administration.”
Said Trump: “They created the Epstein Files, just like they created the FAKE Hillary Clinton/Christopher Steele Dossier that they used on me, and now my so-called ‘friends’ are playing right into their hands.”

Jon Ossoff Attempts to Tap Into Angst About Trump
Sen. Jon Ossoff (D-GA) is going hard at President Trump as he gears up for a difficult reelection fight, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
At a rally, Ossoff called Trump a “depraved man” and said America had to fight against “deeply entrenched corruption and greed.”
Assassination Attempt Changed Trump
Associated Press: “One year after coming millimeters from a very different outcome, Trump, according to friends and aides, is still the same Trump.”
“But they see signs, beyond being on higher alert on stage, that his brush with death did change him in some ways: He is more attentive and more grateful, they say, and speaks openly about how he believes he was saved by God to save the country and serve a second term, making him even more dug in on achieving his far-reaching agenda.”
