Legitimate Concerns About Fetterman’s Health

September 6, 2022 at 10:33 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette editorial: “Pennsylvania Lt. Gov. and U.S. Senate candidate John Fetterman has not fully recovered from the serious stroke he suffered in May. His campaign has acknowledged his obvious struggles with “auditory processing” and speech, but the persistence of those struggles has contrasted with the campaign’s rosier predictions of a return to the rigors of campaigning, including debating his opponent, Mehmet Oz.”

“If Mr. Fetterman is not well enough to debate his opponent, that raises serious concerns about his ability to serve as a United States senator.”

“None of this excuses the antics of Mr. Oz’s campaign, which has decided that its candidate will benefit from dragging the race deeper and deeper into the muck… Mr. Oz has decided, oddly, to distance himself from his own campaign’s actions, as if it’s an unaffiliated super PAC.”

Republicans Looks for a Reset

September 6, 2022 at 10:30 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

First Read: “After a summer of leaders infighting, a key party committee squandering its financial advantage and its nominees struggling on the campaign trail, Senate Republicans are looking for a reset.”

“With 63 days until Election Day — and control of the U.S. Senate completely up for grabs.”

Los Angeles Times: A hyperpolarized, deeply fragile 2022 election: Democrats’ energy over Roe blunts GOP advantage.

Why (and How) Biden Should Decline to Run Again

September 6, 2022 at 10:15 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A.B. Stoddard: “Relinquishing incumbency is a risk. There’s no doubt about that. There’s a reason sitting presidents are hard to beat… Joe Biden is an optimist so he’d probably appreciate the glass-half-full scenario: that the Democratic party can unite after a robust primary that engages every part of its coalition. The nominee who emerges from such a debate would campaign against Trump (or his MAGA heir) to take the country in a new direction, making it both a change election and a referendum on Trumpism.”

“Going back to a geriatric criminal madman loser who works harder for Vladimir Putin than us? Nobody wants that t-shirt. And even if the GOP nominee isn’t Trump but a mini-Trump, Democrats can still campaign as change agents against the MAGA movement and their authoritarian socialists.”

Rich Democrats Are Buying Second Citizenships

September 6, 2022 at 9:54 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Daily Beast: “So-called ‘golden visas’ have become a white-hot status symbol among the ultra-rich in recent years. Some 30 countries now offer citizenship or residency by investment, which allows individuals to live and work in a foreign country simply by spending a lot of money there—a second citizenship starts at several hundred thousand dollars and stretches to several million.”

“For a time, the clientele was also fairly conservative, driven by fears of a pending liberal ‘wealth tax’ or—for the tech bros—a pending IPO that would result in a massive taxation event. Now, however, the demographics have begun to shift dramatically.”

Germany Extends Life of Two Nuclear Reactors

September 6, 2022 at 9:51 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Germany will keep two of its three remaining nuclear power plants operational as an emergency reserve for its electricity supply, delaying the country’s plans to become the first industrial power to go nuclear-free for its energy,” the New York Times reports.

“The latest decision is aimed at giving the government more room to cushion the blow of a deepening energy crisis spurred by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, to which the European Union has responded with a string of sanctions against Moscow. Soaring energy costs have thrown the bloc into an economic tailspin — especially Germany, Europe’s largest economy.”

Harris Says She Never Ate a Grape Until Her Twenties

September 6, 2022 at 9:37 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Vice President Kamala Harris told The Nation that she had never eaten a grape until she was an adult because she would “never cross a picket line.”

Said Harris: “This sounds quaint, and so I’m reluctant to say it, but, you know, I didn’t eat a grape until I was in my 20s. Like, literally, had never had a grape. I remember the first time I had a grape, I went, ‘Wow! This is quite tasty.’ It was absolutely ingrained so deeply in me: Never cross a picket line.”

Not surprisingly, the New York Post is trying to turn the story into “grape-gate” by questioning her dates.

Election Deniers on the Ballot

September 6, 2022 at 9:32 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

FiveThirtyEight: “There are a lot of election deniers on the ballot. Out of 529 total Republican nominees running for office, we found 195 who fully denied the legitimacy of the 2020 election. These candidates either clearly stated that the election was stolen from Trump or took legal action to overturn the results, such as voting not to certify election results or joining lawsuits that sought to overturn the election.”

“Moreover, an additional 61 candidates raised questions around the results of the 2020 election. These candidates haven’t gone so far as to say explicitly that the election was stolen or take legal action to overturn it. However, they haven’t said the election was legitimate either. In fact, they have raised doubts about potential fraud.”

Liz Truss Becomes U.K. Prime Minister

September 6, 2022 at 9:05 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Liz Truss has met Queen Elizabeth to be appointed prime minister, succeeding Boris Johnson and becoming Britain’s fourth leader in six years, the Times of London reports.

Financial Times: “Liz Truss may have inherited an 80-seat House of Commons majority from Boris Johnson, but Britain’s incoming prime minister is facing a restive parliamentary party that may not be wholly behind her new agenda.”

“One of the first major challenges for Truss will be to shore up her position among the party’s 357 MPs, a majority of whom did not support her leadership bid.”

Biden Puts Defense of Democracy at Center of Agenda

September 6, 2022 at 8:58 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“It is the element of President Biden’s foreign policy that overlaps most significantly with his domestic agenda: defending democracy,” the New York Times reports.

“His drive to buttress democracy at home and abroad has taken on more urgency as Russia wages war in Ukraine, China expands its power and former President Donald Trump and his Republican supporters attack American democratic norms and fair elections.”

Financial Times: Biden was right to ring the alarm for democracy.

Mastermind of Navy Bribery Scheme Escapes House Arrest

September 6, 2022 at 8:52 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Leonard Francis, the former military contractor known as ‘Fat Leonard’ who orchestrated the largest corruption scandal in US Navy history, is on the run after escaping house arrest in San Diego by cutting off his GPS monitoring ankle bracelet,” CNN reports.

“The escape comes just three weeks before his sentencing.”

U.S. Political Dynasties Are in Decline

September 6, 2022 at 8:42 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Jonathan Bernstein: “The slow fade-out of dynastic politics in the US is continuing in 2022. Just in the last few weeks, Nick Begich III was defeated for the Alaska House seat his grandfather once held; his uncle was also a senator from Alaska. And in New York, State Senator Alessandra Biaggi, whose grandfather served in the US House, failed to win a House seat.”

“Yet the most high-profile development this year is the apparent political demise of the Bush family, with Texas Land Commissioner George P. attempting to move up to state attorney general and getting squashed by a better than 2-to-1 margin in the Republican primary. It’s possible that George P. or another 4th-generation Bush will have a robust political future, but given the family’s opposition to former President Donald Trump, that isn’t so likely.”

Fake Elector Escorted Operatives Before Voting Breach

September 6, 2022 at 8:29 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A Republican county official in Georgia escorted two operatives working with an attorney for former President Donald Trump into the county’s election offices on the same day a voting system there was breached, newly obtained video shows,” CNN reports.

“The breach is now under investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and is of interest to the Fulton County District Attorney, who is conducting a wider criminal probe of interference in the 2020 election.”

Washington Post: Election deniers repeatedly visited Georgia county office at center of criminal probe, video shows.

Henry Cuellar Running Ad Paid for by Taxpayers

September 6, 2022 at 7:54 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-TX) is running an ad talking about how he’s keeping his district safe.

Punchbowl News: “The interesting thing is that he paid for this spot with government money, not campaign funds. The ad isn’t explicitly political – but it’s awfully close.”

Trump’s Truth Social Merger Under Threat

September 6, 2022 at 7:41 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The blank-check acquisition firm that agreed to merge with Donald Trump’s social media company failed to secure enough shareholder support for a one-year extension to complete the deal,“ Reuters reports.

“At stake is a $1.3 billion cash infusion that Trump Media & Technology Group which operates the former U.S. president’s Truth Social app, stands to receive from Digital World Acquisition Corp, the special purpose acquisition company that inked a deal last October to take TMTG public.”

Politico’s New Owner Prayed for Trump’s Re-Election

September 6, 2022 at 7:36 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The new German owner of Politico sent an email to his closest executives asking if they should meet up to pray for Donald Trump’s re-election, the Washington Post reports.

When asked about the email, Mathias Döpfner initially denied it existed: “It has never been sent and has never been even imagined.”

When confronted with a printout of the email, he explained that he may have sent it “as an ironic, provocative statement in the circle of people that hate Donald Trump.”

Democrats Weigh Gay Marriage Vote Before Midterms

September 6, 2022 at 7:33 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “As Democrats return for the pre-midterm sprint after a successful summer, one of the party’s biggest goals is not to mess up the positive shift in political momentum. Congress needs to handle a couple other must-pass issues — and Democrats may not do much else besides confirm judges.“

“Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer is committed to a vote at some point on the marriage equality bill, but has been circumspect about the timing. He said in August ‘we will have a vote on it. Not giving you a timetable,’ and emphasized the impending confirmation of Circuit Court judges.”

Punchbowl News: “We’re hearing that Democratic congressional leaders are considering attaching a provision codifying same sex marriage protections onto a must-pass spending bill to keep the federal government open past Sept. 30.”

RNC Chair Backs Away from Rigid Abortion Bans

September 6, 2022 at 7:30 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Associated Press: “Republican National Committee Chair Ronna McDaniel acknowledged that the GOP must sharpen its message on abortion given the Democrats’ apparent momentum.”

Said McDaniel: “We can’t allow them to control the narrative.”

“She emphasized Republican leaders’ record of supporting exceptions for abortion in cases of rape, incest and the life of the mother, sidestepping questions about candidates like Mastriano, Georgia Senate nominee Herschel Walker and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, who oppose such exceptions.”
