Rove Suggests Secret Service Informed FBI

August 29, 2022 at 1:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Karl Rove speculated on Fox News that a Secret Service agent may have informed the FBI that there were classified documents inside Mar-a-Lago.

Said Rove: “The Secret Service, and this is my own personal trajectory, I have no information other than just simply knowing that the Secret Service is there, they have no statutory responsibility over classified material but they are sworn federal law officers. They’re law enforcement, and they have a responsibility to report a crime and particularly after a letter is sent from one of the president’s lawyers saying ‘we don’t have any more classified material’ and President Trump has told the June 3 meeting ‘you can get anything you need, just say, and we’ll get if for you.'”

Abortion Ruling Changes Trajectory of Midterms

August 29, 2022 at 12:58 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Democratic candidates have decried North Carolina’s newly reinstated abortion restrictions after a federal judge allowed a state law banning nearly all abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy to go into effect,” the AP reports.

“But some North Carolina Democrats say the ruling earlier this month — the latest fallout of the June U.S. Supreme Court decision eliminating federal abortion protections — might be the catalyst their party needed to reinvigorate its political prospects in what was shaping up to be a losing year.”

Will ‘Candidate Quality’ Doom GOP Chances?

August 29, 2022 at 12:31 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

David Drucker: “Fresh doubts about the Republican Party’s chances of winning Senate control in midterm elections are being fueled by a slate of first-time candidates struggling to find their footing against seasoned Democratic competition.”

“Initial projections suggested a red tidal wave might sweep Republicans to power in November, ousting Democrats from Georgia to Washington state and New Hampshire to Arizona. With Labor Day and the homestretch of the fall campaign approaching, the GOP is suddenly fighting to defend seats in red states like Ohio and swing states like Pennsylvania. The culprit? Candidates endorsed by former President Donald Trump who were ill-prepared for the general election.”

Taiwan Is Caught in a Great Game Over Microchips

August 29, 2022 at 12:30 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“As Chinese warships rehearsed a blockade of Taiwan this month, they simulated a scenario global leaders and policymakers have been busy worrying about: not war, but a grinding halt to the electronic supply chains that make the modern world run,” the New York Times reports.

“Taiwan’s biggest trading partners — which include China, the United States, Europe and Japan — have different ideas about the self-ruled island’s political future, yet all share common ground in one desire, to expand their piece of its cutting-edge semiconductor industry.”

Doug Mastriano Stays Hard Right

August 29, 2022 at 11:58 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “Since winning the primary in May with 44% of the vote — after snagging a last-minute endorsement from former president Donald Trump and surviving a late scramble to consolidate the vote against him — Mastriano has eschewed the typical path of reorienting his campaign toward the middle. Instead, he has held fast to the same issues that drove his rise after attending the Stop the Steal rally in Washington on Jan. 6, 2021, and openly embracing Christian nationalism.”

“But many Republicans say Mastriano’s focus on base voters has made it hard for him to raise money and broaden his appeal, hurting the party’s chances in November. Mastriano’s latest campaign finance report showed less than $400,000 as of June, and the campaign hasn’t bought any airtime on local TV. He only grants interviews to friendly outlets such as right-wing talk radio and the podcast hosted by former Trump adviser Stephen K. Bannon. The campaign did not respond to requests for comment for this article.”

Trump’s Documents Already Examined by FBI

August 29, 2022 at 11:40 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“FBI agents have already finished their examination of possibly privileged documents seized in an Aug. 8 search of Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home, according to a Justice Department court filing Monday that could undercut the former president’s efforts to have a special master appointed to review the files,” the Washington Post reports.

“The ‘filter team’ used by the Justice Department to sort through the documents and weed out any material that should not be reviewed by criminal investigators has completed its review, the brief filed by Justice Department prosecutors says. The filing came in response to a ruling Saturday by U.S. District Judge Aileen M. Cannon to hold a hearing this week on Trump’s motion seeking the appointment of a special master.”

‘Inflation Fever’ Is Finally Breaking

August 29, 2022 at 11:30 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Global inflation is finally coming off the boil, even if it’s set to remain far too hot for the liking of the world’s central bankers,” Bloomberg reports.

“As economic growth slows, prices for key raw materials — from oil to copper and wheat — have cooled in recent weeks, taking pressure off the cost of manufactured goods and food. And it’s getting cheaper to move those things around, as supply chains slowly recover from the pandemic.”

Financial Times: “Central bankers face a more challenging economic landscape than they have experienced in decades and will find it harder to root out high inflation, top multilateral officials and monetary policymakers have warned.”

Student Loan Forgiveness May Erase Deficit Savings

August 29, 2022 at 11:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Joe Biden’s controversial plan to forgive up to $20,000 in student loans for tens of millions of Americans could erase the projected $300 billion deficit reduction that his hard-fought climate, drugs and tax legislation would generate over 10 years – by as much as two times,” Reuters reports.

“The extent of the additional federal debt incurred by the one-time gift to college graduates and ex-students depends on which estimates are used, economists say.”

What If an ‘Election Denier’ Is Elected?

August 29, 2022 at 10:58 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Many of the election deniers running for secretary of state this year have spent their time talking about something they can’t do: ‘decertifying’ the 2020 results,” Politico reports.

“The bigger question — amid concerns about whether they would fairly administer the 2024 presidential election — is exactly what powers they would have if they win in November.”

“Atop the list of the most disruptive things they could do is refusing to certify accurate election results — a nearly unprecedented step that would set off litigation in state and federal court. That has already played out on a smaller scale this year, when a small county in New Mexico refused to certify election results over unfounded fears about election machines, until a state court ordered them to certify.”

Ukraine Issues Iodine Pills

August 29, 2022 at 10:30 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Iodine tablets are being distributed to civilians near the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant in Ukraine after renewed shelling raised fears of a radiation leak,” the Times of London reports.

Republicans Accuse Justice Department of Political Hit

August 29, 2022 at 10:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Stephen Collinson: “Reverberations over the FBI’s search of Mar-a-Lago will escalate this week as Donald Trump challenges the Justice Department in court and US intelligence agencies assess whether his retention of classified documents harmed national security.”

“Republicans are, meanwhile, demanding more transparency over the unprecedented search of an ex-president’s home, seizing on a heavily redacted affidavit unsealed on Friday to raise suspicions of a politically motivated hit.”

“Uproar over the search three weeks ago has thrust Trump, who has teased a 2024 campaign, back into the center of a midterm election cycle already rocked by the Supreme Court’s overturning of the right to an abortion – one factor that has given Democrats new hope of staving off a Republican red wave in November.”

Midterm Election Outlook Tightens

August 29, 2022 at 9:58 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Republicans remain the favorites to win control of the House of Representatives in the midterm elections, but Democrats, who for over a year have braced for large losses, are finishing the summer in a stronger position than where they started,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“Public polling and recent election results are prompting Democrats, nonpartisan election observers and some Republicans to expect a more competitive battle this fall. Republicans need just a handful of seat pickups to take over the House, which Democrats currently control 220-211 with four vacancies.”

Politico: “Republicans poised for smaller gains in House, poll suggests.”

Pakistan Pleads for Aid After Floods

August 29, 2022 at 9:30 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Pakistan’s government has appealed for international help to tackle a flooding emergency that has killed more than 1,000 people and threatens to leave a third of the country – an area roughly the size of Britain – underwater,” The Guardian reports.

‘Unforeseen Tragedy’ Causes DeSantis to Cancel Fundraiser

August 29, 2022 at 9:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) had to pull out of a fundraiser for New York gubernatorial candidate Lee Zeldin (R) because of an “unforeseen tragedy,” the New York Post reports.

Said a spokeswoman: “An unforeseen tragedy forced Governor DeSantis to reschedule his trip to New York. While we’re rescheduling with Governor DeSantis for a later date, tonight’s fundraiser will proceed and is expected to raise almost a million dollars.”

Hogan Says Biden’s Fascism Remark Was ‘Divisive’

August 29, 2022 at 8:58 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan (R) criticized President Biden’s description of MAGA Republicans as embracing “semi-faciscm” as “divisive,” the Washington Times reports.

Said Hogan: “It’s that kind of divisive rhetoric on both sides that’s really bad for America. I’ve been talking about the toxic politics and if Republicans are calling Democrats socialists and communists and we have the president of the United States calling Republicans fascist, I don’t think it adds to the overall discussion.”

Tempers Flare In Brazilian Presidential Debate

August 29, 2022 at 8:56 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Jair Bolsonaro accused his main election challenger Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of overseeing ‘the most corrupt government in Brazil’s history,’ as the frontrunners for the country’s top office faced off in public for a first presidential debate,” the Financial Times reports.

“Ahead of what is shaping up to be a polarized contest in Latin America’s most populous country, tempers flared in a nearly three-hour televised event on Sunday evening that included six candidates.”

Hillary Clinton Posts Photo In Support of Sanna Marin

August 29, 2022 at 8:24 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Hillary Clinton posted a dance photo in support of Finland prime minister Sanna Marin — while urging her to “keep dancing” through the backlash, the New York Post reports.

Republicans Going All-In for Herschel Walker

August 29, 2022 at 8:17 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Was Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell talking about Herschel Walker recently when he referred to ‘candidate quality’ as he downplayed Republicans’ chances of retaking the Senate?,” the Atlanta Journal Constitution reports.

“McConnell has never offered more detail about which party nominees he’s worried about, but he hosted a fundraiser Friday night in Louisville to boost the former UGA footballer’s campaign nonetheless.”
