The New Michigan Republican Party

February 21, 2023 at 12:33 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Vice News profiles newly-elected Michigan GOP chair Kristina Karamo “who still refuses to concede her 14-point election loss last fall, has close ties to the QAnon conspiracy theory movement and thinks everyone and everything is satanic, from Jay-Z to Cardi B to yoga.”

“Karamo’s win is a problematic development for Republicans. Michigan is a key presidential battleground state that will be important in 2024. Her own double-digit loss in 2022 says a lot about her political organizing ability, and her win is the latest proof that hardline conspiracists have pushed out the establishment party regulars who helped Republicans win a number of hard-fought statewide races over the past decade.”

Fueling Political Wire, One Cup at a Time

Every morning before the sun’s up, I sit down to work on Political Wire with a cup of Trade Coffee beside me.

It’s become part of the ritual — opening the laptop, scanning the news, and taking that first sip of a roast matched perfectly to my taste. Trade connects me with small roasters across the country, delivering beans that are always fresh and far better than what you’ll find at the grocery store.

If you love coffee as much as I do, use this link to get 50% off and taste the difference for yourself.

Formal Arms Control May Be Ending

February 21, 2023 at 12:15 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“When President Vladimir Putin announced at the end of a 100-minute speech on Tuesday that he would suspend Russia’s participation in the New START treaty — the last surviving arms control agreement between the two largest nuclear-armed powers — it was one more indication that the era of formal arms control may be dying,” the New York Times reports.

“Even before Mr. Putin dismissed the implementation of the treaty’s required inspections as ‘nonsense,’ it was already in deep trouble.”

4-Day Work Week Trial Finds Few Are Going Back

February 21, 2023 at 12:00 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The largest-ever trial of the four-day work week found that most UK companies participating are not returning to the five-day standard, and a third are ready to make that change permanent,” Bloomberg reports.

“The study involved 61 organizations and about 2,900 workers who voluntarily adopted truncated work weeks from June to December 2022. Only three organizations decided to pause the experiment, and two are still considering shorter hours, data released Tuesday showed. The rest were convinced by revenue gains, drops in turnover and lower levels of worker burnout that four is the new five when it comes to work days.”

February 21, 2023 at 11:25 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Furious female staffers at CNN have threatened to quit if Don Lemon stays on-air following his sexist comments last week that Nikki Haley and women in their 40s are “past their prime,” the Daily Mail reports.

It’s the Culture, Stupid

February 21, 2023 at 11:15 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Joe Klein: “Deep in the Democratic Party’s DNA is the notion that the economy matters more to voters than cultural issues. Sometimes it does. It certainly did after the crash of 2008. Inflation helped defeat Jimmy Carter in 1980. And then there was 1992, when James Carville wrote his immortal words on the blackboard in Bill Clinton’s Little Rock headquarters: It’s the economy, stupid!”

“It wasn’t, really. We were emerging from a minor recession, but Clinton’s economic policies weren’t what won the election—indeed, he changed them almost immediately after winning office, from stimulus to budget-balancing, palliating the bond market and lowering interest rates (a brilliant choice as it happened).”

“Clinton won the presidency because he convinced voters that, unlike the past 20 years of Democrats, he was tough on crime (including a rather disgusting execution of Ricky Ray Rector, a black man of limited intelligence) and that he wanted to reform welfare (which badly needed it).”

China’s Xi Jinping Plans Russia Visit

February 21, 2023 at 10:42 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Chinese leader Xi Jinping is preparing to visit Moscow for a summit with Russia’s president in the coming months, as Vladimir Putin wages war in Ukraine and portrays himself as a standard-bearer against a U.S.-led global order,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“Beijing says it wants to play a more active role aimed at ending the conflict, and the people familiar with Mr. Xi’s trip plans said a meeting with Mr. Putin would be part of a push for multiparty peace talks and allow China to reiterate its calls that nuclear weapons not be used.”

“Arrangements for the visit are at an early stage and the timing hasn’t been finalized.”

Barbara Lee Announces Senate Bid in California

February 21, 2023 at 9:55 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Rep. Barbara Lee (D-CA), a longtime favorite of liberal Democrats, confirmed Tuesday that she will run for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by retiring Sen. Dianne Feinstein,” the Los Angeles Times reports.

Said Lee, in a video: “For those who say my time has passed, well, when does making change go out of style? I don’t quit. I don’t give up. Come on. That’s not in my DNA. Because when you stand on the side of justice, you don’t quit. If they don’t give you a seat at the table, you bring a folding chair for everyone.”

It’s Primary Election Day In Wisconsin

February 21, 2023 at 9:49 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Voters head to the polls on Tuesday to choose which two jurists will compete to join the Wisconsin Supreme Court — a race unmatched in its consequence to policy in this battleground state, where conservatives and liberals are expected to raise and spend levels of cash not seen before in a judicial race,” the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.

“Conservatives are defending their 4-3 majority on the court as Wisconsin Democrats seek to flip control of the court to liberal justices for the first time in more than a decade. The race comes in a year when the issue of abortion is top of mind after a dormant 19th century law banning the practice in nearly every situation has resurfaced following last year’s U.S. Supreme Court ruling overturning Roe v. Wade.”

Rep. David Cicilline (D-RI) will resign from Congress in June to become president and CEO of the Rhode Island Foundation, the Boston Globe reports.
