Biden Doesn’t Trust His Secret Service Detail

December 28, 2022 at 9:34 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Joe Biden was so disturbed by the Secret Service’s handling of text messages sought by the House January 6 select committee that he stopped speaking candidly in the presence of special agents assigned to his protection detail, a new book on the Biden White House has revealed,” the Independent reports.

“In The Fight of His Life: Inside Joe Biden’s White House, author Chris Whipple writes that Mr Biden’s discomfort with the post-Trump era agency began early on in his presidency, when it became clear that “some of” the agents charged with protecting him from assassination were strong supporters of the man he defeated in the 2020 election, former president Donald Trump.”

Also interesting: Biden’s relationship with his security further strained after an agent claimed that the president’s dog had bitten him — an allegation that Biden doesn’t quite believe.

December 28, 2022 at 5:58 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Pete Sessions (R-TX) told the Washington Examiner that he is “not supportive” of Rep.-elect George Santos (R-NY) — who admitted to lying about his background — being in the House GOP conference.

Said Sessions: “So I will just tell you, I am not supportive of him being in our conference at all from what I know. You cannot come into our conference as a known liar.”

George Santos Is a Serial Liar

December 28, 2022 at 5:52 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep.-elect George Santos (R–NY) “made additional false claims over the years about his family history, work history and education in campaign appearances over the years, a review of statements made in two of his campaigns for Congress found,” CNN reports.

“CNN’s KFile uncovered more falsehoods from Santos, including claims he was forced to leave a New York City private school when his family’s real estate assets took a downturn and stating he represented Goldman Sachs at a top financial conference where he berated the company for investing in renewables.”

“CNN also reviewed more instances of Santos providing additional false history of his family’s background.”

Judge Suggests Trump Asked Rally Crowd to Break Law

December 28, 2022 at 4:35 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Jan. 6 select committee’s finding that Donald Trump lured followers to storm the Capitol does not absolve them of legal responsibility for their actions, a federal judge ruled Wednesday, the first opinion to cite the congressional panel’s criminal referrals of the former president,” Politico reports.

“U.S. District Court Judge John Bates cited the select committee’s report and criminal referrals to swat down a Jan. 6 defendant’s claim that he believed Trump had authorized him and other rioters to enter the Capitol when he urged the crowd to march down Pennsylvania Avenue.”

Follow the Money for Clues About George Santos

December 28, 2022 at 3:33 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

David Corn notes that Rep.-elect George Santos (R-NY), a former call center operator, isn’t giving a consistent story about how he built a multi-million dollar fortune in just two years.

“As the Santos story moves forward, it’s the money that may matter the most. It shouldn’t be hard for him to demonstrate what Devolder did, what he earned, and how he was able to pour $700,000 in his own money into his 2022 campaign. He could—and probably should—release his tax returns. That’s not a common practice for members of Congress. But Santos warrants such scrutiny.”

The Daily Beast reports that a Russian oligarch’s cousin gave at least $56,100 to Santos.

Republicans Step Up Attacks on FBI as It Probes Trump

December 28, 2022 at 3:22 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “The attacks… are ‌e‌mblematic of a toxic dynamic that is increasingly central to Republican Party politics. Mr. Trump’s supporters — among them, Republicans poised to take over the House next month — have seized on the letter’s accusations and stepped up their assaults on the FBI, seeking to undermine the bureau just as it has assumed the lead in an array of investigations of Mr. Trump.”

“Rep. Jim Jordan, the Ohio Republican who will be the Judiciary Committee’s chairman next month, has pledged to investigate what he describes as the politicization of the FBI as well as that of the Justice Department. In a taste of what is to come, the committee’s Republican staff released a 1,000-page report last month that asserted that the FBI hierarchy ‘spied on President Trump’s campaign and ridiculed conservative Americans’ and that the ‘rot within the F.B.I. festers in and proceeds from Washington.'”

If “defunding the police” was so toxic for Democrats — even though most didn’t support it — this could be a big political loser for Republicans.

U.S. to Require Travelers From China to Test Negative

December 28, 2022 at 3:13 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The U.S. will require travelers from China to submit a negative Covid-19 test beginning Jan. 5, the Wall Street Journal reports.

Politico: “The move reflects the Biden administration’s alarm about the potential spillover of new Covid variants linked to soaring Covid infections in China. The Chinese government ended its draconian Covid-zero policy — hinged to mass testing, tracing and lockdowns — on Dec. 7 following mass protests in November fueled by anger about the strategy.”

GOP Elections Official to Plead Guilty to Voter Fraud

December 28, 2022 at 3:10 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Jason Schofield, the Republican elections commissioner in Rensselaer County, New York, “is scheduled to plead guilty to federal criminal charges in January in connection with an ongoing investigation of voter fraud by the U.S. Department of Justice,” the Albany Times Union reports.

“Schofield’s scheduled guilty plea to felony charges on Jan. 11 would mark the second conviction in the federal investigation that’s being spearheaded by the FBI and has focused on the harvesting of absentee ballots in elections over the past two years. A source close to the case said Schofield’s plea agreement includes a pledge to cooperate in the wide-ranging investigation that has also examined the use of county resources and employees to gather absentee ballots.”

December 28, 2022 at 1:38 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Former Trump White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson testified to the January 6 Committee that then-chief of staff Mark Meadows regularly burned documents during the transition period after the November 2020 election, CNN reports.

She also described how Meadows occasionally told staffers to keep some Oval Office meetings “close hold” and potentially omitted from official records.
