Trump Is Vulnerable on Immigration

April 23, 2025 at 3:23 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Jonathan Chait: “Right now, the public supports Trump’s immigration stance because it’s reacting to the extraordinary surge in migration, led by huge numbers of unprocessed asylum seekers, under the Biden administration. But when Joe Biden took office, after four years of draconian Trump policies and rhetoric—above all the cruel spectacle of family separation—the public was in a far more forgiving mood toward immigrants. This reflects a dynamic called ‘thermostatic public opinion,’ in which people tend to move in the opposite direction of where the president is pushing policy.”

“If immigration is still the best issue for the Republican candidate in, say, summer 2028, then Democrats would be wise to let the issue drop. At the moment, however, time remains for thermostatic opinion to swing against Trump, and Democrats can help push it in that direction by highlighting the unpopular aspects of his agenda.”

“When asked about reports that the Trump administration wanted Britain to lower its tariffs on cars to 2.5 percent from 10 percent, Ms. Reeves said only that she wanted to reduce trade barriers between Britain and other countries.”

Bloomberg: “It’s unclear whether Reeves’ less urgent tone is a reflection of frustration on the British side or a sense that there’s advantage in slowing down the talks.”

Rand Paul Fights Trump on Tariffs

April 23, 2025 at 12:31 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Many Republican lawmakers lie low when they have differences with President Trump. Sen. Rand Paul has taken the opposite approach,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“The libertarian known for sometimes quixotic battles at the fringes of Capitol Hill is now at the center of the biggest fights in Washington. Paul’s moves have irritated the president, whom Paul never endorsed in the 2024 election, and now major parts of Trump’s agenda could hinge on whether the senator sticks to his guns or folds.”

“The conflict over tariffs could come to a head soon. A measure Paul is co-sponsoring to end Trump’s tariffs is set to come to the floor when the Senate returns next week.”
