Herschel Walker Claims to Own Companies That Don’t Exist

April 13, 2022 at 7:34 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Former NFL star Herschel Walker has made millions in business ventures since he retired in 1997, and he claims to be worth more than $29 million today,” the Daily Beast reports.

“But despite that success, the Republican Senate hopeful and longtime friend of Donald Trump has, for whatever reason, chosen to dramatically inflate his business record… In doing so, Walker has established a parallel record of demonstrably false claims, many of which appear to bear no resemblance to reality whatsoever.”

McCormick Raised $4.3 Million in First Quarter

April 13, 2022 at 7:30 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Pennsylvania Republican Dave McCormick’s U.S. Senate campaign raised more than $4.3 million in the first three months of the year,“ Axios reports.

“That substantial haul leaves McCormick in a strong position to compete ahead of a May 17 primary in which his chief rival, celebrity doctor Mehmet Oz, scored former President Trump’s endorsement last week.”

“A source close to the campaign said it will be reporting additional self-funding from McCormick.”

Democrats Not Necessarily Headed for a Shellacking

April 13, 2022 at 7:25 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Alan Abramowitz: “Democrats are very likely to lose their majority in the House of Representatives in the 2022 midterm election and could lose their majority in the Senate, although that is less certain. In neither chamber, however, are they likely to experience a shellacking of the sort that both parties have experienced in some postwar midterm elections.”

“That is simply because they won only 222 seats in the House in 2020 and are defending only 14 seats in the Senate. The fact that very few of those Democratic seats in the House and none of the Democratic seats in the Senate are in districts or states that were carried by Donald Trump in 2020 makes it even less likely that the party will experience a shellacking the size of which we’ve seen in some previous midterms or anything close to it — even as the Republicans could very well flip both chambers of Congress this fall.”

Fed Officials Are Split on Inflation

April 13, 2022 at 7:06 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“U.S. central bankers are split on whether high inflation will be a recurring problem in the future requiring repeated rate hikes, comments from two officials showed on Tuesday, a stark contrast to their broad consensus on the current policy path,” Reuters reports.

Biden Calls Russian Atrocities in Ukraine ‘Genocide’

April 13, 2022 at 6:59 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Joe Biden for the first time labeled Russia’s atrocities in Ukraine genocide, Politico reports.

Said Biden: “Your family budget, your ability to fill up your tank, none of it should hinge on whether a dictator declares war and commits genocide a half a world away.”

He later added: “It’s become clearer and clearer that Putin is just trying to wipe out the idea of being Ukrainian. The evidence is mounting. It looks different than last week.”

Ukraine president Volodymyr Zelensky responded: “True words of a true leader.”

Trump Convinces Jake Corman to Stay In Race

April 13, 2022 at 6:54 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Pro Tempore of Pennsylvania’s Senate Jake Corman (R) “has petitioned to remain in the race for Governor hours after petitioning to have his name removed from the ballot after reportedly speaking with former President Donald Trump, who has not yet endorsed a candidate in the race,” WHTM reports.

How Republicans Could Still Screw Up the Midterms

April 13, 2022 at 6:48 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) said the political atmosphere is good for Republicans heading into the midterms but warned that the party could bungle its chances if “unacceptable” candidates win their primaries but go on to lose in November, The Hill reports.

Said McConnell: “From an atmospheric point of view, it’s a perfect storm of problems for the Democrats. How could you screw this up? It’s actually possible. And we’ve had some experience with that in the past.”

He added: “In the Senate, if you look at where we have to compete in order to get into a majority, there are places that are competitive in the general election. So you can’t nominate somebody who’s just sort of unacceptable to a broader group of people and win. We had that experience in 2010 and 2012.”

Democrats Return to Law and Order Politics

April 13, 2022 at 6:39 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Across the country, Democratic candidates are sprinting to claim the tough-on-crime mantle,” Politico reports.

“The signs of the Democratic Party’s evolution on crime are everywhere — and go beyond defeats suffered by the ‘defund the police’ movement in Minneapolis and elsewhere last year. As the midterm elections pick up, Democrats are calling for more police funding and attempting to co-opt traditionally Republican talking points on crime.”

“If 2020 was the year progressives reordered the traditional politics of crime and policing, 2022 looks like the year centrists are regaining their footing and nullifying those gains.”

Blaming Putin Won’t Work

April 13, 2022 at 6:24 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

From a Wall Street Journal editorial:

“Inflation is a powerful political force because it can’t be explained away. Nearly every voter feels it every day. If the November elections are a referendum on the cost of living, voters won’t blame the Kremlin. They’ll blame the party in power in Washington.”

House Democrats Push Biden on Saudi Arabia

April 13, 2022 at 6:22 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Wall Street Journal: “The leaders of the House foreign affairs and intelligence committees and more than 20 other Democrats plan to press the Biden administration to take a tougher stance on Saudi Arabia, citing Riyadh’s refusal to cooperate with Washington over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and a range of human-rights issues.”

“In a letter reviewed by The Wall Street Journal, the lawmakers issued some of the toughest criticism the Biden administration has faced from Congress over its handling of the U.S. relationship with Saudi Arabia. President Biden described Saudi Arabia as a pariah state during the 2020 campaign and promised to hold the Saudi government accountable for alleged rights abuses, but has taken few concrete steps to do so.”

Top Trump White House Lawyers to Testify

April 12, 2022 at 8:16 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Two of Donald Trump’s top White House lawyers are slated to speak with the Jan. 6 select committee Wednesday,” Politico reports.

“Pat Cipollone, Trump’s White House counsel, and his deputy Patrick Philbin, are expected to speak informally with the panel, a potential precursor to more formal transcribed testimony later. Cipollone and Philbin did not respond to requests for comment.“

Giuliani Unlocks Phones for Prosecutors

April 12, 2022 at 7:40 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Federal prosecutors may soon reach a charging decision regarding Rudy Giuliani’s foreign lobbying efforts involving Ukraine, after he helped investigators unlock several electronic devices that were seized by the FBI,” CNN reports.

“Giuliani has also offered to appear for a separate interview to prove he has nothing to hide, renewing a proposal that federal prosecutors have previously rebuffed.”

Grassley Says He Won’t Vote to Repeal Obamacare

April 12, 2022 at 6:35 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) “went on record in front of around 80 people in Waukon to say he does not support repealing a landmark healthcare reform law that brought coverage to more than 230,000 Iowa residents,” Iowa Starting Line reports.

Said Grassley: “I’m saying I would not—we’re not going to repeal the Affordable Care Act.”

Pentagon Looks to Vastly Expand Weapons to Ukraine

April 12, 2022 at 6:32 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Biden administration is poised to dramatically expand the scope of weapons it’s providing Ukraine, U.S. officials said Tuesday, with the Pentagon looking to send Mi-17 helicopters that can be equipped to attack Russian vehicles, armored Humvees and a range of other arms,” the Washington Post reports.

“The new aid package could be worth $750 million.”

Capitol Rioter Says Trump ‘Authorized’ Capitol Attack

April 12, 2022 at 5:32 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“An attorney for a man who took a coat rack and a bottle of liquor during the U.S. Capitol attack argued to a jury on Tuesday that former President Donald Trump ‘authorized’ the Jan. 6 assault on the building by convincing ‘vulnerable’ people like his client that the election was stolen,” NBC News reports.

Roger Stone Ally Urged Protesters to ‘Descend on Capitol’

April 12, 2022 at 5:27 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“One week before an angry mob stormed the Capitol, a communications expert named Jason Sullivan, a onetime aide to Roger Stone, joined a conference call with a group of President Donald Trump’s supporters and made an urgent plea,” the New York Times reports.

“After assuring his listeners that the 2020 election had been stolen, Mr. Sullivan told them that they had to go to Washington on Jan. 6, 2021 — the day that Congress was to meet to finalize the electoral count — and ‘descend on the Capitol.'”

“While Mr. Sullivan claimed that he was ‘not inciting violence or any kind of riots,’ he urged those on the call to make their presence felt at the Capitol in a way that would intimidate members of Congress, telling the group that they had to ensure that lawmakers inside the building ‘understand that people are breathing down their necks.'”

Secret Service Downplays Severity of Breach

April 12, 2022 at 5:22 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Secret Service leaders are downplaying any risk to national security after four of its employees — including an agent assigned to protect first lady Jill Biden — were allegedly hoodwinked by two men impersonating federal agents and plying them with gifts, telling congressional committees and allies that the severity of the breach has been overblown by prosecutors and the media,” the Washington Post reports.

“But several former Secret Service officials warn that the alleged infiltration of the elite protection agency reveals a major vulnerability extending well beyond this particular case. They said the revelations suggest that agents who had regular access to the White House and the Biden family — and who are supposed to be trained to spot scammers or spies seeking to ingratiate themselves — were either too greedy or gullible to question a dubious cover story.”

April 12, 2022 at 5:19 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul says Lt. Gov. Brian Benjamin has resigned after his arrest in a federal corruption probe, the AP reports.
