Cracks Emerge in GOP’s Florida Firewall

September 25, 2026 · 7:13 am ET · Leave a Comment

“President Donald Trump is not making it easy for Republicans in Florida to keep their firewall,” Politico reports.

“The same forces undercutting the GOP in other states — including Trump’s war in Iran and ensuing high gas prices, Hispanic voters turned off by his immigration surges and stubborn concerns over affordability — are hitting Floridians.”

“Now, some polling has shown statewide races inside the margin of error, including for governor and U.S. Senate. Democratic congressional seats seen as flippable after mid-decade redistricting are a question mark while some Republicans have distanced themselves from an increasingly unpopular president.”

Xi Jinping Didn’t Bring a CEO Entourage

September 25, 2026 · 7:01 am ET · Leave a Comment

“When China’s leader, Xi Jinping, traveled to the United States in 2015 for his first state visit, he brought a delegation of Chinese chief executives to meet their American counterparts,” the New York Times reports.

“Disputes over human rights, cyberattacks and trade were straining relations. But Washington and Beijing still shared an undeniable common interest: making money in each other’s markets.”

“A decade later, the contrast with this week’s summit between President Trump and Mr. Xi could not be more stark. No prominent Chinese chief executives attended Thursday night’s state dinner at the White House.”

U.S. Military Lays Groundwork for Action Around Cuba

September 25, 2026 · 6:30 am ET · Leave a Comment

“The U.S. Army Reserve is examining whether it can provide the military’s Southern Command with police forces, medical personnel and other support units within the next four months,” CBS News reports.

“Though the message makes no reference to Cuba, the request is for continued military planning aimed at Cuba.”

Trump’s Odd Midterm Strategy

September 25, 2026 · 6:28 am ET · Leave a Comment

Stephen Collinson: “The country craves economic relief. People think groceries and the roofs over their heads are too expensive. The vise tightened Thursday when mortgage rates rose above 7%.”

“With their wages disappearing more quickly, Americans are even more angry about one of the top causes — the Iran war. Even GOP voters are increasing losing confidence in the conflict amid soaring gasoline and diesel prices.”

“And citizens are increasingly fearful about advances in artificial intelligence. That’s no wonder after recent warnings from tech chiefs that their brainchild could threaten humanity.”

“Yet on this trio of issues, and many others, Trump is offering a program that is exactly opposite of what most Americans want.”

Democrats Weigh How to Handle Data Center Vote

September 25, 2026 · 6:25 am ET · Leave a Comment

“Senate Democrats will soon have to decide whether to do one of their most vulnerable Republican colleagues a big political favor just weeks before the midterm elections,” Politico reports.

”Republican leaders are expected to set up a vote next week on the Ratepayer Protection Act, legislation that aims to curb energy prices associated with the data centers. It easily passed the House last week with 206 Democratic votes, but it faces a tougher path to passage across the Capitol — thanks to campaign-season politics.”

Trump’s Diesel Export Limits Would Face Huge Problems

September 25, 2026 · 6:24 am ET · Leave a Comment

“The diesel export ban that President Donald Trump is mulling in a bid to bring down record-high prices would backfire in two ways — further dividing Hill Republicans while risking even pricier gasoline,” Semafor reports.

“It’s not clear that the Trump administration will impose diesel export limits, which the president said this week that he’d explore as average national prices push past $6.50 per gallon. If Trump does push ahead, his main cheerleaders will be GOP candidates in tight races this fall who are eager to market more ideas to lower costs before the midterms.”

“But most congressional Republicans want nothing to do with the idea, no matter how close they are with the administration.”

New York Times: Why a U.S. diesel export ban may not lower prices.

Michael Whatley Sticks by Trump

September 25, 2026 · 6:20 am ET · Leave a Comment

“If any Republican Senate nominee is sticking to the tried-and-true strategy of elections past — winning by embracing President Trump — it is Michael Whatley of North Carolina,” the New York Times reports.

“He spoke at Mr. Trump’s midterm convention. He stood by the Iran war. He opposed blanket pauses on building new data centers.”

“Some of his counterparts in other battleground states have been doing the opposite, seeking distance from Mr. Trump as prices surge and the president’s popularity keeps slumping. Not so Mr. Whatley, who welcomed visits last week and this week from Mr. Trump and Vice President JD Vance, a distinction no other Republican Senate candidate can claim.”

Candidates Aren’t Sharing the Stage Like They Used To

September 25, 2026 · 6:19 am ET · Leave a Comment

“Debates in political campaigns used to be a given. Today, candidates increasingly view them as optional — or a political liability to be avoided,” Axios reports.

“In a midterm cycle dominated by unprecedented spending on contrast ads, the candidates themselves are remarkably reluctant to challenge each other face-to-face.”

”It’s a sign of how campaigns have evolved, and an erosion of norms: Candidates — fueled by their parties and super PACs — still try to tear apart the opposition, they just do it from a distance.”

Alaskans Not Moved by Peltola’s Treatment of Her Staff

September 25, 2026 · 6:15 am ET · Leave a Comment

“Many Alaskans on Thursday largely brushed off the news that Mary Peltola, the state’s former congresswoman, had mistreated staff and used offensive slurs,” the New York Times reports.

“Although some said they were disappointed by Ms. Peltola’s behavior, voters appeared to have for the most part retreated to their partisan corners in the closing stretch of a key Senate race between Ms. Peltola, a Democrat, and Senator Dan Sullivan, a Republican.”

Senate Republicans Plan Last-Ditch Effort to Lower Costs

September 25, 2026 · 6:04 am ET · Leave a Comment

“Inside the Senate GOP’s campaign headquarters on Wednesday, dozens of Republicans gathered for a strategy session during what was expected to be their final days in Washington before the November midterms,” CNN reports.

“Then Sen. Jon Husted of Ohio – one of the most endangered Republicans in the country – made an urgent appeal to his colleagues. He told them to stay in town, demanding they ‘do something real and tangible on affordability,’ according to a person in the room. Among those who forcefully agreed were Sen. Susan Collins of Maine, who is also in one of the most competitive Senate races and has made repeated pleas of her own in recent meetings, according to a person familiar with the GOP’s internal deliberations.”

“Soon afterward, GOP leaders agreed: The Senate would return to Washington next week to take up a bill aimed at protecting Americans from electricity price hikes amid a data center boom.”

Tucker Carlson Says Trump Should Be Removed

September 24, 2026 · 10:38 pm ET · Leave a Comment

Tucker Carlson told NPR that Donald Trump should be removed from office under the 25th amendment, suggesting the president was not actually in charge when he ordered the start of the Iran war.

Said Carlson: “I don’t think he had the latitude to make this decision on his own.”

Ketanji Brown Jackson Criticizes Use of Emergency Docket

September 24, 2026 · 10:27 pm ET · Leave a Comment

“Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson on Thursday slammed the Supreme Court’s use of its ’emergency docket,’ suggesting the court has misused the process in allowing the Trump administration to move forward with a host of controversial policies while challenges play out in lower court,” the Washington Post reports.

”The high court’s emergency docket has been criticized by a range of legal experts who say the justices can make consequential decisions while offering little or no explanation for their reasoning.”

New York Times: Justice Jackson calls emergency docket “potentially corrosive.”

State Dinners Are a Rarity for Trump

September 24, 2026 · 8:30 pm ET · Leave a Comment

New York Times: “Mr. Trump — known for inviting world leaders to his private clubs — has hosted only four state dinners across his two terms. Joe Biden hosted six. Ronald Reagan holds the record with 59.”

“Mr. Trump’s first state dinner came over a year into his first presidency, when he shared a kiss on the cheek and racks of lamb with President Emmanuel Macron of France in a relationship that has since soured.”

The Week Republicans Finally Panicked About Trump

September 24, 2026 · 8:27 pm ET · Leave a Comment

Susan Glasser: “Forty days before the midterm elections, Washington is increasingly consumed not by Trump’s endless antics so much as by the rapidly clarifying political reality of the predicament in which the President, deeply unpopular and trapped in an unwon war of his own choosing in the Middle East, has got himself and his party.”

“A reckoning—one far harsher than was expected, even a few months ago—now seems imminent.”

New Jersey Governor Asks Her Lt. Governor to Resign

September 24, 2026 · 8:26 pm ET · Leave a Comment

“New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill has called for the resignation of Lt. Gov. Dale Caldwell after an independent investigation found he repeatedly violated state policy,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“Sherrill, a Democrat, hired former New Jersey Attorney General Chris Porrino to lead the probe, which examined allegations of sexual harassment and ethics violations.”

CNN and MS NOW Still Blocked From White House

September 24, 2026 · 8:24 pm ET · Leave a Comment

“CNN and MS NOW were denied entry to cover a state dinner at the White House Thursday night despite a federal judge ordering that their access be restored,” The Wrap reports.

“President Donald Trump hosted Chinese President Xi Jinping at a state dinner at the White House on Thursday night. When reporters from the outlets attempted to cover arrivals at the event, officials from the Trump administration told them they were not allowed to do so.”

Hackers Say They Have Data On All FBI Employees

September 24, 2026 · 8:23 pm ET · Leave a Comment

“A high profile hacking group claims it has breached multiple FBI-related services and stolen data ‘on all FBI employees and applicants,'” 404 Media reports.

“The data breach could be massively significant and may have all sorts of national security and counterintelligence implications. Criminals from the same ecosystem as ShinyHunters have previously used hacked data like phone records to track, intimidate, and harass the FBI agents investigating them.”

“The highly sensitive data could also be a boon to foreign intelligence agencies who want to better understand how one of the most important law enforcement and intelligence agencies in the U.S. operates. And if the data fell into the hands of more criminals, FBI agents and their spouses could face serious threats to their safety.”

Talarico Challenges Paxton to Debate on Fox News

September 24, 2026 · 6:36 pm ET · Leave a Comment

“Democratic Texas Senate candidate James Talarico challenged Republican state Attorney General Ken Paxton on Thursday to a debate on Fox News, which he dubbed Paxton’s ‘safe space,'” the Washington Post reports.

“Talarico has challenged Paxton to a number of debates hosted by numerous news networks for months, but Paxton has yet to agree to any. Paxton’s campaign initially said it would be willing to debate Talarico so long as the moderators were neutral. But in the weeks since, it has been silent on future debates.”

Said Talarico: “Ken Paxton is running from the fight. And that sounds like low-T behavior to me.”
