“The problems plaguing the medium-security prison, which holds around 1,400 people, are so notorious within the federal government that its culture of indifference and mismanagement is derisively known among bureau employees as ‘the Atlanta way.'”

He also called for police squad cars to be parked on every corner and suggested moving encampments of homeless people out of major cities and to “large parcels of inexpensive land at the outer reaches of the city.”

July 26, 2022 at 4:20 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Attorney General Merrick Garland left open the possibility that former President Donald Trump could be prosecuted in connection with inciting the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection,” NBC News reports.

Said Garland: “Look, we pursue justice without fear or favor… We intend to hold everyone, anyone who was criminally responsible for the events surrounding Jan. 6, for any attempt to interfere with the lawful transfer of power from one administration to another, accountable. That’s what we do.”

He added: “I’ll say again that we will hold accountable anyone who is criminally responsible for attempting to interfere with the transfer — legitimate, lawful transfer of power from one administration to the next.”

July 26, 2022 at 3:30 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Vanity Fair: “GOP politicians are increasingly shirking sit-down interviews, barring journalists from 2022 events, and skipping debates—an aversion to media scrutiny that could upend how the next presidential election cycle is covered.”

Emails Shed Light on Trump Fake Electors Plan

July 26, 2022 at 1:55 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Previously undisclosed emails provide an inside look at the increasingly desperate and often slapdash efforts by advisers to President Donald Trump to reverse his election defeat in the weeks before the Jan. 6 attack, including acknowledgments that a key element of their plan was of dubious legality and lived up to its billing as ‘fake.'” the New York Times reports.

“The dozens of emails among people connected to the Trump campaign, outside advisers and close associates of Mr. Trump show a particular focus on assembling lists of people who would claim — with no basis — to be Electoral College electors on his behalf in battleground states that he had lost.”

Failures on Tax Policy Spur Frustration Among Democrats

July 26, 2022 at 1:31 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Almost none of the major tax ideas Democrats proposed as they won control of the federal government 18 months ago will get over the finish line,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“They talked about reversing the 2017 tax cuts, paring back a law they all opposed. They proposed wealth taxes, global minimum taxes and other ways to make the richest Americans and multinational corporations pay more. They even got $1.5 trillion in tax increases through the House.”

“However, despite holding the White House and narrowly controlling the House and Senate for nearly two years, Democrats are likely to walk into the midterm elections having barely budged tax policy in their direction. They implemented temporary tax breaks in their pandemic response law and might yet extend some other provisions later this year.”
