— Sen. Jon Tester (D-MT), quoted by the Wall Street Journal.

A new survey finds the United States’ reputation as the leading global power has suffered in France and Germany because of Washington’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic that has killed nearly 600,000 Americans.

From the survey: “The first three months of the Biden administration have not affected French and German views of U.S. influence in the world.”

June 7, 2021 at 11:12 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Allen West (R), who resigned his position as Texas GOP chairman and has been most frequently discussed as a potential challenger to Gov. Greg Abbott (R), declined to say whether he was eyeing any particular statewide office, the Texas Tribune reports.

But he did raise the prospect he could challenge Rep. Colin Allred (D).

Said West: “There’s a guy in Texas 32 I really don’t care for being my congressional representative.”

Trump Praises Manchin for Protecting the Filibuster

June 7, 2021 at 11:05 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Former President Donald Trump called into Fox Business to praise Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) for his refusal to do away with the filibuster.

Said Trump: “It’s a very important thing. He’s doing the right thing, and it’s a very important thing.”

Of course, Trump repeatedly urged Mitch McConnell to abolish the filibuster when Republicans had the Senate majority.

Justices Won’t Take Up Challenge to All-Male Draft

June 7, 2021 at 10:45 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Supreme Court declined Monday to consider the constitutionality of a federal law requiring men, but not women, to register for the military draft when they turn 18,” NBC News reports.

“As is its usual practice, the court didn’t say why it wouldn’t take the case. But three justices, Stephen Breyer, Sonia Sotomayor, and Brett Kavanaugh, said the court’s longstanding deference to Congress on military issues cautions against taking the case while lawmakers are considering whether to change the law.”

Democrat Rips Manchin as ‘the New Mitch McConnell’

June 7, 2021 at 10:42 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) blasted Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) in a CNN interview as an obstructionist “doing everything in his power to stop democracy.”

Said Bowman: “Joe Manchin has become the new Mitch McConnell… Manchin is not pushing us closer to bipartisanship, he is doing the work of the Republican Party by being an obstructionist, just like they’ve been since the beginning of Biden’s presidency.”

Conservative Radio Host Turns Against Arizona ‘Audit’

June 7, 2021 at 10:22 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Conservative radio host Mike Broomhead, a staple on the Phoenix airwaves, has turned against the Arizona GOP “audit” of the 2020 election results, the Los Angeles Times reports.

Said Broomhead: “You’re turning this into the clown show that you’ve been accused of… You’re turning this into the sideshow at the state fair.”

He added: “No matter where you stand, the one thing we can all agree on is it has put a great big wedge in this community. That to me is the worst part of this. It’s one more reason for us to stand on opposite sides of the streets and complain about each other.”

Heineman Mulls Another Run for Nebraska Governor

June 7, 2021 at 10:08 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Former Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman (R) may seek his old job again, the Lincoln Journal Star reports.

But the dynamics are in play now for a little Shakespearean drama that could pit Gov. Pete Ricketts (R) against his Republican predecessor with the possibility that former President Donald Trump might suddenly come barging on stage opposing both of them.

Pritzker Signs New Illinois Maps Into Law

June 7, 2021 at 10:05 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker (D), who as a candidate vowed to veto any partisan redistricting plan for the legislature, signed into law Friday new partisan-drawn districts for the General Assembly and state Supreme Court designed to maintain his party’s control in Illinois,” the Chicago Tribune reports.

“Pritzker, who only a day earlier indicated that he was still reviewing the final lines of the legislation, said he was satisfied that they preserved racial and ethnic minority representation in line with the federal Voting Rights Act.”

Herschel Walker Skipped Georgia GOP Convention

June 7, 2021 at 10:04 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“If Herschel Walker wanted to fire up Republicans about a potential U.S. Senate run, the GOP convention this weekend in Jekyll Island would have been the perfect setting,” the Atlanta Journal Constitution reports.

“Instead, the UGA football great skipped the gathering.

Democrats Want to Avoid Benghazi-Like Probe

June 7, 2021 at 9:55 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Daily Beast: “Democrats understand that creating a special committee risks making an investigation into Jan. 6 a partisan circus. And Republicans are already arguing that any probe would turn into a political hit job designed to hurt Donald Trump and the GOP ahead of the 2022 midterm elections.”

“It’s just that Democrats don’t have many other good options.”

Insofar as the GOP’s goal with the Benghazi hearings was to deny Hillary Clinton the presidency, this model arguably works.

June 7, 2021 at 9:53 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Stormy Daniels says her lawyer has been in touch with prosecutors in New York City who are investigating former President Trump’s company,” The Hill reports.

Said Daniels: “I have not been called to testify. But I know that my attorney, Clark Brewster, has been in touch with them and very forthcoming with my willingness to participate.”

The Bushes Surrender to Trump

June 7, 2021 at 9:40 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Hayes Brown: “No matter how you feel about them, the Bush family has been one of the most influential clans in modern U.S. history. Like most political families in the US, the Bushes have stayed loyal to one party — the Republican Party, in their case.”

“But despite an unbroken string of service — including two presidencies, two governorships and a combined 14 years in Congress — the Republican Party has not always returned the favor.”

“Now, the youngest member of the line has decided his political future requires embracing former President Donald Trump, a man who’s gone out of his way to reject and scorn everything his family has done.”
