Filipinos Choose a New President

May 9, 2022 at 8:22 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Filipinos headed to the polls today in a hotly contested election that has been described as the most consequential in decades, one that will shape the direction of the country’s fragile democracy and transform alliances with the United States and China,” the New York Times reports.

“Although there are 10 presidential candidates on the ballot, the competition is seen as a two-way race between Ferdinand Marcos Jr., the son and namesake of the former dictator, and Leni Robredo, the country’s vice president.”

Excess Death Rates Ran 21x Higher in Reddest Counties

May 9, 2022 at 7:57 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Charles Gaba: “For the full year 2021, official Covid deaths ran more than three times higher in the reddest tenth of the U.S. than the bluest. This is something I’ve been tracking and writing about for nearly a year now, so while it’s pretty dramatic, it’s nothing new.”

“What is new is the ‘other’ excess deaths in 2021: They ran a jaw-dropping twenty-one times higher in the reddest decile than the bluest… nearly 50 per 100K residents vs. only ~2.3 per 100K.”

Biden Taps Democrats’ Abortion Fury

May 9, 2022 at 7:21 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“White House officials are seizing the political opportunity in Democrats’ doomsday scenario, the end of nationwide abortion rights, to try to salvage a midterm election thought to be all but lost for President Joe Biden’s party,” Bloomberg reports.

“An expected Supreme Court decision overturning the landmark Roe v. Wade decision next month will give Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris the chance to convince abortion-rights supporters that voting is the best way to channel their frustration.”

“It’s a message the White House believes will resonate with suburban women, minorities and young voters, whose support could be key to staving off a loss of Democrats’ House and Senate majorities.”

Let the Abortion Ads Begin

May 9, 2022 at 7:19 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Maggie Hassan (D-NH) has a new digital ad linking her Republican opponents to “McConnell’s decadelong crusade to criminalize abortion.”

From the ad: “The Republican primary candidates have spent their careers proving that they would be in lockstep with McConnell’s agenda of criminalizing abortion and punishing women.”

Democrats Go On Offensive Over Abortion

May 9, 2022 at 7:16 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer is expected to file cloture today on a bill by Sen. Richard Blumenthal that would enshrine a statutory right to abortion nationwide. The move will set up the upper chamber for a Wednesday vote — though the roll call will almost certainly fail to garner the 60 votes needed to clear the filibuster, as happened to a similar proposal earlier this year,” Politico reports.

“Among Democrats, there’s a debate over whether the party is better off trying to go it alone on this legislation (all the better to use to pummel the GOP on the campaign trail), or to take a more bipartisan approach by calling up an alternative to the Blumenthal bill that is narrower in its scope and backed by two Republican senators supportive of abortion rights: Maine’s Susan Collins and Alaska’s Lisa Murkowski.”

“Schumer, ever the political animal, has chosen the former approach.”

GOP Tries to Change to Subject from Abortion

May 9, 2022 at 7:13 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Playbook: “Republicans are already previewing the talking points they’ll employ as they move to filibuster the bill. As we reported… the NRSC is encouraging GOP candidates to change the topic from abortion rights overall to less-popular facets of the issue where Republicans feel they can win.”

Russian Smart TVs Hacked

May 9, 2022 at 6:27 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Russian television schedules were hacked to display an anti-war message as the country celebrated with a Victory Day parade, the BBC reports.

The name of every programme was changed to: “On your hands is the blood of thousands of Ukrainians and their hundreds of murdered children. TV and the authorities are lying. No to war.”

Select Committee Must Decide on Calling Trump or Pence

May 9, 2022 at 6:21 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The House committee investigating the Jan. 6 insurrection has interviewed nearly 1,000 people. But the nine-member panel has yet to talk to the two most prominent players in that day’s events — former President Donald Trump and former Vice President Mike Pence,” the AP reports.

“As the investigation winds down and the panel plans a series of hearings in June, members of the committee are debating whether to call the two men, whose conflict over whether to certify Joe Biden’s 2020 presidential election win was at the center of the attack.”

How Mark Meadows Tried to Keep Trump in Power

May 9, 2022 at 6:17 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “Meadows granted conspiracy theory-peddling activists direct access to the Oval Office and personally connected some with the president… He pressed the Justice Department to investigate spurious and debunked claims, including a bizarre theory that an Italian operation changed votes in the United States — an allegation a top Justice official called ‘pure insanity,’ … He also pushed the Justice Department, unsuccessfully, to try to invalidate the election results in six states through federal court action.”

“Now Meadows’s actions are at the center of investigations by both the House committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack and the Justice Department, which is examining whether to press contempt-of-Congress charges against him as well as its own inquiry into the events surrounding the insurrection.”

Putin’s ‘Doomsday Plane’ Fails to Make Appearance

May 9, 2022 at 5:59 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Its flyover was much-hyped, but Vladimir Putin’s ‘Doomsday Plane’—a specially equipped jet from which the Russian elite can allegedly run a nuclear war—was conspicuous by its absence at Russia’s Victory Day parade in Moscow on Monday,” the Daily Beast reports.

“It was reported that the flyover of the plane was canceled because of bad weather, however footage showed Moscow enjoying a pleasant and sunny spring day and weather services suggested there was wind of just 3 mph.”

New York Times: Putin defends his Ukraine invasion, invoking World War II, but does not signal an escalation.

“Twenty internet providers, including AT&T Inc., Comcast Corp. and Verizon Communications Inc., have agreed to help offer high-speed internet to millions of unconnected households through the bipartisan infrastructure law,“ the Wall Street Journal reports.

“The program has run up against an early hurdle because the people who need it most are the hardest to reach because they aren’t online.”

Donald Trump responded to a 60 Minutes interview with his former defense secretary, Mark Esper, calling him a “a RINO incapable of leading.”

He added: “Mark Esper was weak and totally ineffective, and because of it, I had to run the military. I took out ISIS, Qasem Soleimani, al-Baghdadi, rebuilt the military with $2.5 trillion, created Space Force, and so much more.”

Trump ‘Weirded Out’ by Madison Cawthorn Scandals

May 8, 2022 at 8:18 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rolling Stone: “Just a month after he invited Cawthorn to speak at a North Carolina rally, Trump has grown increasingly annoyed and disappointed with his MAGA apprentice. The twice-impeached former president has described some of what he’s heard about Cawthorn’s latest woes — and the online sexual imagery associated with it — as ‘gross.’”

One source “said that lately Trump had voiced bewilderment and disgusted confusion about what he’d been told of the flood of leaks and footage, asking at one point in recent days if one of the allegations was that Cawthorn was ‘fucking his cousin?’”

Said another: “President Trump is completely weirded out by the allegations.”

— White House adviser Anita Dunn, quoted by CNN.
