Mike Rogers Now Seeks Distance from Trump

September 24, 2026 · 8:15 am ET · Leave a Comment

Detroit News: “With fewer than six weeks until Election Day in his closely watched race against Democrat Abdul El-Sayed, Rogers is starting to break publicly with the unpopular president. He called on Sept. 21 for an end to the war Trump started in Iran that voters now connect to record-high diesel fuel prices that get baked into the cost of groceries.”

Said Rogers: “The war with Iran needs to end and end quickly. When it does, energy costs will plummet.”

“Rogers’ effort to distance himself from Trump after months of promoting the president’s agenda is the latest chapter in the evolution of a career politician who has morphed from establishment Republican and Trump critic to MAGA acolyte in his bid to return to elected office.”

— Former Gov. Chris Christie (R), quoted by Politico, hinting he might run for president again in 2028.

A Lame Duck Supreme Court Scramble?

September 24, 2026 · 7:38 am ET · Leave a Comment

Six years ago this month, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg died just weeks before a presidential election.

Senate Republicans wasted no time. Barely five weeks later, they confirmed Amy Coney Barrett to replace her, locking in a Supreme Court seat before voters had their say.

Quote of the Day

September 24, 2026 · 7:32 am ET · Leave a Comment

“He’s had an incredible grip on the Republican Party, unlike any other president. What we are seeing now, when there is distance, it’s intentional, and it’s incredibly noteworthy.”

— Former Mike Pence chief of staff Marc Short, quoted by Politico, on Republicans starting to distance themselves from President Trump.

Republicans Are Finally Testing a Break with Trump

September 24, 2026 · 7:28 am ET · Leave a Comment

“For over a decade, the question has been asked probably a million times,” Boston Globe reports.

“When will Republicans break away from Donald Trump?”

“We might finally have an answer: around 40 days until the 2026 midterm elections.”

“So far, this week has been defined by sagging polling numbers for Trump that are so bad that Republican candidates in tight contests are creating real distance for the first time.”

Inside the Fierce House GOP War Over Committee Waivers

September 24, 2026 · 7:26 am ET · Leave a Comment

“House Republicans for decades have prided themselves on their strict three-term limit for committee leaders, saying it promotes fresh blood in the party ranks,” Politico reports.

“But that limit has grown less strict in recent years, and a growing number of GOP lawmakers are aching for a crackdown.”

“Three of the 20 sitting House chairs have signaled interest in applying for a waiver to bypass the six-year term limit Republicans have had in place for more than 30 years. If each follows through, it would be the first time so many exceptions have been sought at once — and some Republicans are openly warning the practice is spinning out of control.”

September 24, 2026 · 7:06 am ET · Leave a Comment

“Democrats are begging for more money ahead of November. But they’re torn over what to do with the limited funds they already have,” Politico reports.

“After months of downplaying their financial concerns, the four Democratic groups most responsible for delivering control of Congress are now issuing public pleas for more donations as Republicans swamp them on the airwaves. And party leaders are grappling with tough choices on which races to spend their limited dollars as campaigns clamor for backup.”

Big Fires Everywhere

“If this is the GOP’s post-convention bounce, what they’re bouncing off of appears to be the bottom,” Politico reports.

“All across the map in the most unlikely places, GOP candidates and their advisers are facing an electoral wildfire.”

Said one GOP operative: “The mood is very bad right now. The polling is dropping like a rock, the map is expanding, and the knives are out among consultants. There is a world where we win everything if folks can turn it around and there is a world where this midterm is a historical blow out. People are very on edge.”

Republican Coordinated Campaign Spending Surges

September 24, 2026 · 6:44 am ET · Leave a Comment

“Since the U.S. Supreme Court in June sided with Republicans and struck down federal caps on spending by political parties in coordination with candidates, Republican committees have blown past the former limits as President Donald Trump’s party fights to retain control of Congress in November’s midterm elections,” Reuters reports.

“The Republican committees supporting the party’s candidates in Senate and House of Representatives races have exceeded the former national caps by more than $48 million, according to Federal Election Commission spending disclosures for July ‌and August. Their Democratic counterparts also eclipsed the former limits, but by much less — just under $4 million.”

Beshear Pushes to Flip House Seat in Test of His Strength

September 24, 2026 · 6:14 am ET · Leave a Comment

“As the midterms near, potential 2028 presidential candidates are looking to prove their appeal in a range of House districts across the country. For Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, it’s all about his state’s 6th Congressional District,” CNN reports.

“Beshear is making an all-out push to help a former aide, Zach Dembo, flip the Republican-friendly seat, a win that would further burnish the governor’s reputation as a Democrat who can win in red territory.”

Why the Senate Is Sticking Around

September 24, 2026 · 5:57 am ET · Leave a Comment

Punchbowl News: “For much of this week, it seemed today would be the Senate’s last day in session before the midterms. Senate Majority Leader John Thune looked content to pass a bill overhauling college sports and then go home to campaign.”

”Then political reality hit.”

”Senators from all corners of the conference – especially vulnerable Republicans – used a private GOP lunch Wednesday to say they wanted to come back next week. They want to give themselves another shot at votes tied to the central themes of the 2026 elections – affordability and the rising cost of living.”

House Dems Float Forcing Committee Leaders to Pay Up

September 24, 2026 · 5:53 am ET · Leave a Comment

“Some House Democrats are pushing a caucus rule change that would make paying campaign dues a condition for any lawmaker seeking posts as committee and subcommittee leaders,” the Washington Sun reports.

“After the lawmakers return to the Capitol after the midterms, some Democrats plan to bring up a proposal in their organizational meetings for next Congress that would ensure committee leaders are contributing dues to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee — the political and fundraising apparatus that assists caucus-wide members in their reelection bids.”
