Republicans Push Murkowski to Oppose Relief Bill

March 4, 2021 at 3:16 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Senate Republicans are leaning on Lisa Murkowski to reject President Joe Biden’s $1.9 trillion pandemic relief plan, hoping they can get unanimous GOP opposition and prevent Democrats from claiming the bill is bipartisan,” Politico reports.

“Murkowski is unique, however, and so is her home of Alaska. The state is suffering economically, the pandemic has exacerbated the state’s woes, and she’s complained repeatedly that Biden’s less fossil fuel-friendly energy policies are hurting Alaskans. Moreover, her state changed its primary system recently to dilute the possibility of a conservative or Trump-inspired challenger, giving her room to legislate from the middle.”

The final House vote on the police reform bill contained a big surprise: Just one Republican, staunch Trump ally and conservative Rep. Lance Gooden (R-TX), voted in favor of the act, the Washington Post reports.

Explained Gooden, in a since deleted tweet: “I accidentally pressed the wrong voting button and realized it too late. I have changed the official record to reflect my opposition to the partisan George Floyd Policing Act.”

Former President Donald Trump fired off a rambling statement blaming everyone but himself for GOP election losses in 2020.

He also insisted he doesn’t care what the Wall Street Journal writes, saying the editorial page is only concerned with fighting for globalist causes and RINOs and has “lost great credibility.”

Dan Crenshaw Not Tempted to Run for President

March 4, 2021 at 2:55 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX) told Hugh Hewitt that running for president in 2024 “doesn’t seem very tempting” and is “pretty much” ruling it out.

Said Crenshaw: “I think we’re tripping all over ourselves trying to figure out who’s going to be on the ticket in four years. I think everybody needs to chill just a little bit and let it happen as it will, because then something will emerge. But yeah, I would say pretty much, pretty much ruled it out.”

Two of Biden’s Executive Orders Not Very Popular

March 4, 2021 at 2:23 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Harvard University/Harris Insights poll finds 55% of Americans disapprove of President Biden’s executive orders on transgender athletes to “require schools to let biological boys who identify as girls to participate in girls sports, and vice versa.”

Also lagging, with 55% disapproval, was Biden’s decision to “reduce the deportation of those here illegally who have committed crimes such as DUIs that are not national security related.”

House GOP Worries Trump Will Cost Them Majority

March 4, 2021 at 2:11 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “As Trump ramps up his revenge tour against the House Republicans who voted to impeach him, GOP lawmakers are sounding the alarm that his attempts to meddle in primaries could hurt the party’s efforts to win back the House next year, especially in critical swing districts in New York, Michigan and California. With just five seats between the GOP and the House majority, any one race could determine the balance.”

How Democrats Can Take Back Ohio

March 4, 2021 at 2:00 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The Nation: “The right way to win is to massively invest in increasing turnout of voters of color. Obama’s campaign deployed 800 staff people to knock on doors, identify voters, and get them to the polls. Georgia has nurtured a network of community-based organizations with a presence in every county in the state. Arizona has created a coalition of dozens of organizations spanning the entire progressive spectrum from labor unions to organizations working in the Latino, African American, and Native American communities.”

“Democrats can absolutely hold, and even expand, their majority in the Senate, but it will require learning the right lessons and following the right path.”

— Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), on Fox Business, on President Joe Biden’s criticism of the governors of Texas and Mississippi.

It’s not clear why she’s speaking in the present tense.

Cotton Will Block Garland’s Quick Confirmation

March 4, 2021 at 12:18 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) will slow down the confirmation of Merrick Garland to lead the Department of Justice, Politico reports.

“The hold that Cotton has placed on Garland’s nomination means that Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer will need to clear a procedural hurdle before a final confirmation vote. Democrats had hoped that Republicans would agree to skip that step, particularly given that several of them — including Minority Leader Mitch McConnell — plan to support the nominee.”

“But with Cotton blocking an agreement and the Senate’s focus on passing Biden’s coronavirus relief package, a final confirmation vote on Garland is expected to occur next week at the earliest.”

How Long Can the Gridlock Last?

March 4, 2021 at 12:00 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

FiveThirtyEight: “Our current extended period of closely contested national elections atop stable and persistently uncontested state and local elections is truly unprecedented.”

“The last time we encountered anything similar, American party politics were substantively different and the precursors of impending realignment far clearer. But today, the factors locking in continued closely-balanced hyper-partisan politics are much stronger. And absent a major change to the rules of our elections, no realignment lies in sight. Instead, deepening partisan trench warfare will only worsen fights over the basic rules of voting, undermining the shared legitimacy of elections on which democracy depends.”
