Are Democrats Now Open to Impeachment Witnesses?

February 13, 2021 at 7:21 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Senate Democrats may be opening up to the idea of extending former President Donald Trump’s historic second impeachment trial and calling witnesses as new details emerge of events surrounding the siege of Congress,” the Washington Examiner reports.

“A report from CNN published Friday evening, offering fresh details about a contentious call between Trump and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy on the day of the riot, led at least one Senate Democrat to say he and his colleagues would support extending the proceedings if House impeachment managers indicated a desire for it.”

Said Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD): “If they make a decision to call witnesses, obviously, we would welcome that.”

Graham to Meet with Trump On Future of GOP

February 12, 2021 at 9:49 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Sen. Lindsey Graham said he’ll be meeting with former President Donald Trump in the coming weeks to talk about the future of the Republican Party,” Politico reports.

Said Graham: “I’m going to try and convince him that we can’t get there without you, but you can’t keep the Trump movement going without the GOP united. If we come back in 2022, then, it’s an affirmation of your policies. But if we lose again in 2022, the narrative is going to continue that not only you lost the White House, but the Republican Party is in a bad spot.”

Trump Refused McCarthy’s Request to Call Off Rioters

February 12, 2021 at 8:43 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“In an expletive-laced phone call with House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy while the Capitol was under attack, then-President Donald Trump said the rioters cared more about the election results than McCarthy did,” CNN reports.

Said Trump: “Well, Kevin, I guess these people are more upset about the election than you are.”

“McCarthy insisted that the rioters were Trump’s supporters and begged Trump to call them off.”

“A furious McCarthy told the President the rioters were breaking into his office through the windows, and asked Trump: ‘Who the fuck do you think you are talking to?'”

Olson Won’t Support Those Who Don’t Vote to Convict

February 12, 2021 at 5:04 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Ted Olson, who served as assistant attorney general for Ronald Reagan and solicitor general for George W. Bush — told the National Law Journal that he is now backing impeachment of President Trump.

Said Olson: “This is not just Jan 6. Trump has been attempting for weeks to convince the American public—and duly elected and appointed election officials—that the election was a fraud and was stolen from him, in the face of irrefutable evidence and numerous judicial opinions to the contrary. This was a constant and fraudulent effort to undermine the integrity of American institutions and processes. It culminated, of course, in the violence and lawlessness on Jan. 6.”

He added: “I haven’t resolved yet what I plan to do, but certainly do not plan to contribute financially to or support candidates or committees who do not pass the test of character presented by the Senate’s vote on the impeachment trial.”

5 to 10 Republican Senators May Vote to Convict

February 12, 2021 at 3:37 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Six GOP senators voted this week to move forward with President Donald Trump’s impeachment trial. But Republicans believe several more of them may be considering conviction,” Politico reports.

“As the Trump defense made its argument on Friday, Republicans privately estimated between 5 and 10 of their senators are seriously weighing conviction. There’s no official whip count, and the matter is not being discussed at party meetings, leaving many in the 50-member conference to only guess at their colleague’s inclinations.”

Delay In Redistricting Data Could Cause Election Chaos

February 12, 2021 at 1:20 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The 2020 census data needed for the redrawing of voting districts around the country are extremely delayed and now expected by Sept. 30,” NPR reports.

“Dogged by the coronavirus pandemic and the Trump administration’s interference with the census schedule, the latest expected release date — six months past the March 31 legal deadline — could throw upcoming elections into chaos in states facing tight redistricting deadlines for Congress, as well as state and local offices.”

Trump Lawyer Says House Managers Manipulated Video

February 12, 2021 at 12:58 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“David Schoen, one of former Trump’s defense attorneys, on Friday accused House impeachment managers of having manipulated evidence in their presentation by selectively editing video footage and altering tweets,” the Washington Post reports.

Said Schoen: “We have reason to believe the House managers manipulated evidence and selectively edited footage. If they did and this were a court of law, they would face sanctions from the judge.”

He added: “We have reason to believe that the House managers created false representations of tweets, and the lack of due process means there was no opportunity to review or verify the accuracy.”

February 12, 2021 at 11:43 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Former Vice President Mike Pence has “no plans to condemn Trump or to speak out during the Senate impeachment trial”, despite the near miss with rioters Pence experienced on January 6, the Washington Post reports.

“He is still operating from a playbook of obsequiousness that has become second nature — never airing grievances publicly, and delivering his often rose-colored counsel to Trump only in private, one-on-one settings.”

Biden Aide Threatened Reporter Writing About Him

February 12, 2021 at 11:14 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Vanity Fair: “A White House official tried to quash a story about his relationship with a reporter by issuing threats and using derogatory language to another reporter pursuing it, according to two sources familiar with the incident. In a sympathetic profile Monday, People revealed that White House deputy press secretary TJ Ducklo is dating Axios political reporter Alexi McCammond, who covered the Joe Biden campaign.”

“But behind the scenes, Ducklo had previously lashed out at Politico reporter Tara Palmeri, who was reporting the story, exhibiting behavior that led to tense meetings between the Washington news outlet’s editors and senior White House officials.”

Update: CNN reports Ducklo has been suspended without pay for one week.
