Probe of Capitol Riot Expands

January 27, 2021 at 6:44 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Law enforcement has identified more than 400 suspects and has brought federal criminal charges against over 150 people for actions related to the storming of the Capitol,” Politico reports.

New York Times: “The leadership of the Proud Boys has come under increased scrutiny as agents and prosecutors across the country try to determine how closely members of the far-right nationalist group communicated during the riot at the Capitol this month… At least six members of the organization have been charged in connection with the riot, including one of its top-ranking leaders, Joseph Biggs.”

CPAC Struggles After Trump

January 27, 2021 at 6:37 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“For decades, the Conservative Political Action Conference has been a staple of Republican politics. In recent years, the conservative confab has been the go-to stop for rising GOP stars, grassroots organizers, and luminaries in the Trump movement. But President Donald Trump’s election loss has created hurdles around programming and guest booking,” Politico reports.

“Stringent coronavirus guidelines in Maryland have pushed the conference outside of the Washington, D.C. area for the first time in nearly 50 years. Previous sponsors aren’t yet committed or have decided to forego sponsorship entirely due to changes to the event’s format or disappointment in the return on their investment last year. And the president that attendees adored so much may not show up to the event at all.”

Trump Maintains Firm Grip on the GOP

January 27, 2021 at 6:31 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Morning Consult poll finds over half of Republican voters (56%) believe that Trump should either probably or definitely run for president again in 2024. Just over a third of Republican voters (36%) think he probably or definitely should not.

Republicans and Republican-leaning independent voters are closely split between the Republican Party and the notional Patriot Party that Trump recently floated. A third (33%) said they are more interested in being a member of the Republican Party, and 30% said they would be more interested in being a member of the Patriot Party. A small share (11%) expressed interest in neither party.

The Merciless Men Behind Your Scam Calls

A New York Times reporter met Shahbaz, a scammer who used fake bank alerts to make victims panic. When confronted, he just laughed—no guilt, no remorse.

That’s how these people think: you’re not a person to them—you’re just a name, an address, and a phone number scraped from a website. That's how they find you.

Incogni deletes your exposed personal data from the web—the same data scammers buy to target victims. The less they can see about you, the safer you stay.

They can’t scam you if they can’t find you. Save 55% on your annual subscription with code POLITICALWIRE.

Patrick Leahy Taken to Hospital

January 26, 2021 at 8:49 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Sen. Patrick Leahy was hospitalized out of an abundance of caution on Wednesday, just hours after presiding over the opening of former President Donald Trump’s second impeachment trial,” CNN reports.

“As the Senate president pro tempore — the longest-serving senator of the majority party — the 80-year-old Vermont Democrat is presiding over Trump’s impeachment trial in lieu of Chief Justice John Roberts. Roberts, who oversaw Trump’s first impeachment trial, chose not to oversee the proceedings because Trump is no longer in office, according to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer.”

Oklahoma Tries to Return Hydroxychloroquine

January 26, 2021 at 8:05 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Oklahoma Attorney General’s Office has been tasked with attempting to return a $2 million stockpile of a malaria drug once touted by former President Donald Trump as a way to treat the coronavirus,” the Frontier reports.

“In April, Gov. Kevin Stitt (R), who ordered the hydroxychloroquine purchase, defended it by saying that while it may not be a useful treatment for the coronavirus, the drug had multiple other uses and ‘that money will not have gone to waste in any respect.'”

U.S. Will Vaccinate Most Americans by End of Summer

January 26, 2021 at 7:58 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Biden administration on Tuesday said it would boost the supply of coronavirus vaccines sent to states by about 16% for the next three weeks and will purchase enough additional doses to vaccinate most of the U.S. population with a two-dose regimen by the end of the summer,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“Senior administration officials said the federal government is working to purchase an additional 100 million doses each of the Pfizer Inc. and Moderna Inc. vaccines, increasing the total U.S. vaccine order by 50% to 600 million from 400 million. Officials said they expect the additional doses to be delivered over the summer.”

“The purchases will provide enough supply to vaccinate 300 million Americans in a two-dose regimen over the summer.”

Kaine, Collins Push Motion to Censure Trump

January 26, 2021 at 6:26 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sens. Tim Kaine and Susan Collins are privately pitching their colleagues on a bipartisan resolution censuring former President Trump, Axios reports.

“Senators are looking for a way to condemn Trump on the record as it becomes increasingly unlikely Democrats will obtain the 17 Republican votes needed to gain a conviction in his second impeachment.”

Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) told Business Insider that he is not running for president in 2024.

Greene Repeatedly Said Democrats Should Be Executed

January 26, 2021 at 4:26 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) repeatedly indicated support for executing prominent Democratic politicians in 2018 and 2019 before being elected to Congress, a CNN KFile review of hundreds of posts and comments from Greene’s Facebook page shows.

Republicans Vote En Masse Against Trying Trump

January 26, 2021 at 3:51 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Republicans rallied en masse on Tuesday against trying former President Donald Trump for ‘incitement of insurrection,’ with only five members of his party joining Democrats in voting to go forward with the impeachment trial for his role stirring up a mob that attacked the Capitol,” the New York Times reports.

“In a 55 to 45 vote that strongly suggested that the Senate does not have the votes to convict the former president, senators narrowly killed a Republican effort to dismiss the impeachment charge as unconstitutional. The opposition of all but a handful of Republicans underscored Mr. Trump’s continued strength in the party even after his brazen campaign to overturn his election defeat, fueled by false claims of voting fraud, and he left office with his party relegated to the minority in both houses of Congress.”

Bannon Pardon Raises Risk for Co-Defendants

January 26, 2021 at 3:34 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “The pardon also left three other men who were indicted with Steve Bannon in an unusual and unenviable predicament. None of them received pardons and so they still must face a trial in May. What’s more, legal experts said, Mr. Bannon could now be called as a government witness to testify against them, potentially increasing their legal jeopardy.”

Democrats Look to Reconciliation for Relief Bill

January 26, 2021 at 3:29 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Wall Street Journal: “Democrats are likely to eventually move to a process called budget reconciliation to pass at least part of the legislation with a simple majority in the Senate. Reconciliation typically limits a bill to tax and spending measures.”

“But some in the party want to go further, exploring ways to stretch the rules and precedents that have historically constrained what policy provisions are allowed under the reconciliation process. Some see it as a way to pass party priorities like raising the minimum wage without ending the filibuster.”

Paul Will Force Vote on Impeachment Trial

January 26, 2021 at 3:23 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Sen. Rand Paul will force a vote Tuesday on whether putting a former president on trial for impeachment charges is constitutional,” Politico reports.

“Paul’s effort reflects the widespread belief among Republicans that the Senate should not hold an impeachment trial for former President Donald Trump because he is now a private citizen and therefore is not subject to the punishment of removal from office.”

Playbook: “This might seem like a silly procedural gambit, but it’s important: The move will trigger a vote on whether senators agree, forcing Republicans on record today over whether they even think Trump’s trial is even allowed to proceed.”

“Should more than 34 Republicans agree with Paul, it’s game over. You’ll have your answer that Trump will not be convicted.”

Kudlow Gets Fox Business Show

January 26, 2021 at 3:16 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Larry Kudlow, the former CNBC star who served as director of President Donald J. Trump’s National Economic Council, was named the host of a new daily show on Fox Business set to begin later this year, the New York Times reports.

“This is the first major television gig secured by a senior Trump aide who stayed in the White House until the president’s term ended last week. It is also something of a hiring coup for Fox Business, which competes against CNBC and will now feature one of its rival’s longtime featured players.”

Biden’s Nominee Backs Changes to Section 230

January 26, 2021 at 3:02 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“In a hearing on her nomination for Commerce Department secretary on Tuesday, Rhode Island Governor Gina Raimondo told lawmakers that she will pursue changes to Section 230 if confirmed,” The Verge reports.

Said Raimondo: “I think platform accountability is important because I’ve seen in my own state that misinformation hurts people. But of course, that reform would have to be balanced against the fact that these businesses rely upon user-generated content for their innovation, and they’ve created many thousands of jobs.”

Ben Collins: “I do wonder what happens to the far-right when they realize getting rid of this law they’ve lobbied for years to kill is going to hurt them more than anyone else.”

The Senate voted 78-22 on Tuesday to confirm Antony Blinken as Secretary of State, Axios reports.

Biden Holds First Call with Putin

January 26, 2021 at 2:44 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Joe Biden had his first call with Vladimir Putin on Tuesday,” the AP reports.

“Biden raised concerns about the arrest of opposition figure Alexei Navalny while pressing the Russian president on his nation’s involvement in a massive cyberespionage campaign and bounties on American troops in Afghanistan.”

“Unlike his immediate predecessors, Biden has not held out hope for a “reset” in relations with Russia but has instead indicated he wants to manage differences with the former Cold War foe without necessarily resolving them or improving ties.”
