Retribution Is Here

October 10, 2025 at 12:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Jonathan Lemire: “If the secret to understanding a strongman is to identify his greatest weakness, one place to start with Donald Trump is his obsession with his own eventual obituaries. Trump knows that they will mention his history-making presidencies, his ostentatious wealth, and his unusual charisma—but he also is aware that when he dies, people will remember his conviction on 34 felony counts, and that there is nothing he can do about it.”

“Even now, White House officials have told me, Trump rages about how his guilty verdict is sure to be mentioned way up high in his obituaries.”

“The Massachusetts Institute of Technology became the first university to reject a sweeping proposal from the Trump administration offering colleges funding advantages in exchange for far-reaching campus reforms,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

Said MIT President Sally Kornbluth: “In our view, America’s leadership in science and innovation depends on independent thinking and open competition for excellence. The people of MIT gladly compete with the very best, without preferences. Therefore, with respect, we cannot support the proposed approach to addressing the issues facing higher education.”

Troop Pay Is Now in Trump’s Hands

October 10, 2025 at 10:29 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Donald Trump is now the only person with the power to keep 1.3 million active-duty military members from missing their paychecks Wednesday after the Senate failed to act on spending legislation Thursday then left Washington for the long holiday weekend,” Politico reports.

“If all active-duty troops are not paid on time, it would be a first in U.S. history.”

“Trump, however, has publicly assured service members several times now that they will get their pay regardless of the shutdown. White House officials have been reviewing options to shift funding around to avoid the pay lapse, and many Republicans on Capitol Hill believe Trump will intervene — even amid questions about the legality of the move.”

Wrote Rather, in his newsletter: “That deal and the hiring of Weiss signals to everyone, especially to the man in the Oval Office, that CBS is no longer independent, but under the tutelage of a conservative billionaire who is putting more than his thumb on the scale.”

Republicans Go All In on Anti-Trans Messaging

October 10, 2025 at 9:24 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Republican gubernatorial nominee Winsome Earle-Sears and her conservative allies have gone all in on anti-trans messaging in the Virginia governor’s race, launching more frequent attacks — and taking those attacks further — than Donald Trump’s campaign did in 2024,” NOTUS reports.

“It won’t be a one-off escalation.”

“Earle-Sears’ increased focus on transgender issues is a preview of the Republican Party’s message in the 2026 midterm election, according to political strategists in both parties. They describe the Virginia contest as a model for Republicans in key congressional and statewide races, with candidates prioritizing transgender issues more than they did in 2024, even at the expense of longtime conservative causes like crime, immigration and even the economy.”
