Giuliani Was Not Working Alone on Ukraine

September 29, 2019 at 10:54 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Rudy Giuliani was not the only attorney trying to get damaging information on Joe Biden from Ukrainian officials,” Fox News reports.

“In addition to Giuliani, Washington, D.C., lawyers Joe DiGenova and his wife, Victoria Toensing, worked alongside the former New York City mayor. According to a top U.S. official, the three attorneys were working ‘off the books’ — not within the Trump administration — and only the president knows the details of their work.”

Also interesting: “Fox News has learned that the Pentagon, State Department and National Security Council were ‘unanimous’ in supporting the aid to Ukraine, and that Trump acted alone in withholding the aid over the summer.”

GOP Lawmaker Calls Trump Remark ‘Repugnant’

September 29, 2019 at 10:38 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) criticized President Trump for quoting a pastor saying impeachment could trigger a “Civil War-like fracture” in the country.

Said Kinzinger: “I have visited nations ravaged by civil war. I have never imagined such a quote to be repeated by a President. This is beyond repugnant.”

Ex-Trump Adviser ‘Deeply Disturbed’ by Ukraine Call

September 29, 2019 at 10:28 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump was repeatedly warned by his own staff that the Ukraine conspiracy theory that he and his lawyer were pursuing was ‘completely debunked’ long before the president pressed Ukraine this summer to investigate his Democratic rivals, a former top adviser said on Sunday,” the New York Times reports.

“Thomas P. Bossert, who served as Mr. Trump’s first homeland security adviser, said he told the president there was no basis to the theory that Ukraine, not Russia, intervened in the 2016 election and did so on behalf of the Democrats. Speaking out for the first time, Mr. Bossert said he was ‘deeply disturbed’ that Mr. Trump nonetheless tried to get Ukraine’s president to produce damaging information about Democrats.”

Democrats Plot Messaging War with Trump

September 29, 2019 at 10:24 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“House Democrats are plotting an all-out offensive against President Donald Trump as they pursue an impeachment inquiry, announcing plans on Sunday to streamline their messaging operation and aid vulnerable lawmakers as they face potential blowback in their districts,” Politico reports.

“Speaker Nancy Pelosi and her top deputies laid out the strategy during a private conference call Sunday afternoon. The plan reflects a deepening sentiment among Democrats that Trump’s latest scandal involving Ukraine could persuade the public to support impeachment.”

Biden Urged Networks to Keep Giuliani Off the Air

September 29, 2019 at 10:18 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Joe Biden’s presidential campaign contacted top television anchors and networks on Sunday to “demand” that Rudy Giuliani, President Trump’s personal lawyer, be kept off the air because of what they called his misleading comments about the Biden family and Ukraine, the New York Times reports.

Biden’s Allies Worried He’s Not Prepared for Tough Campaign

September 29, 2019 at 9:20 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Some of Joe Biden’s supporters are voicing growing concern that his campaign is not prepared to weather the dual political rip currents suddenly reshaping the 2020 race — an onslaught of attacks on his family from President Trump and a tightened contest for the Democratic nomination,” the Washington Post reports.

“Several allies, including top financial backers, are weighing whether to create a super PAC to independently defend Biden and go after the president…”

“Other supporters caution that a more aggressive approach could cut against Biden’s above-the-fray appeal and warn him against losing sight of Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA.), whose steady march in popularity has eroded Biden’s standing and given her narrow leads over him in several recent polls in early-voting states.”

Majority Approves of Impeachment Inquiry

September 29, 2019 at 12:25 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

CBS News Poll: More than half of Americans — and an overwhelming number of Democrats — say they approve of the fact that Congress has opened an impeachment inquiry into President Trump. But as the inquiry begins, there is no national consensus on how to assess the president’s actions.”

“Partisans have immediately and predictably split: most Democrats call the president’s handling of matters with Ukraine illegal, and deserving of impeachment.”

“There’s a real risk in not moving forward with an impeachment… I certainly think that the gravity of the situation demands that we move forward with the inquiry.”

— House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff. In an interview with NBC News.

Johnson Promises ‘Consequences’ for U.K. Court

September 29, 2019 at 7:58 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson insisted to the Sunday Telegraph that he respected the U.K. Supreme Court’s judgment “very humbly and very sincerely.”

But he suggested there would be “consequences” following the judges decision to intervene in his illegal decision to suspend Parliament.

The Sunday Times reports Johnson personally apologized to the queen following the court’s verdict.

Trump’s Road from Wishing Impeachment to Dreading It

September 29, 2019 at 7:38 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “The president for months genuinely believed he’d gain politically from an impeachment inquiry because he thought Democrats were out to get him on any issue they could, and such an inquiry would make that clear.”

“Privately, he talked to aides about the way Democrats even picked up seats in the 1998 midterms as President Bill Clinton faced impeachment hearings. Trump also latched onto the fact that removing a president required the approval of two-thirds of the Senate — so he felt assured that as long as he maintained the support of Senate Republicans, he would be fine.”

“The president’s optimistic, even nonchalant attitude melted away this week in a series of sudden developments as he crisscrossed meetings at the United Nations in New York. Trump and a coterie of aides were stunned by a swift progression of events that upended their longtime thinking about how an impeachment scenario would proceed. By the time they returned to the White House Thursday, they had tested and retested strategies on the fly as they began to recognize the perilous road ahead that would likely look far different from anything this president or any of his predecessors faced.”

Pelosi Turns to Schiff to Lead Impeachment Inquiry

September 29, 2019 at 7:30 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “The confluence of two otherwise coincidental events — the embarrassing Lewandowski hearing followed in quick succession by the explosion of the Ukraine story — handed Pelosi an opening to sideline Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.) in favor of the more widely trusted head of the Intelligence Committee, Rep. Adam Schiff (Calif.), as Democrats launch the formal impeachment inquiry. And Pelosi has made clear that the investigation will focus narrowly on the Ukraine matter, a scandal she believes could be easily understood by the public.”

“Schiff, in concert with other chairmen, moved swiftly Friday to issue subpoenas for documents from Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and set up depositions next week with State Department officials who would have knowledge of Trump’s engagements with Ukraine.”

Politico: Trump declares war on Adam Schiff.

Impeachment Trial Can’t Be Blocked In Senate

September 28, 2019 at 10:31 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Republican leadership issued a memo Saturday clarifying that the Senate must take action if the House of Representatives approves articles of impeachment against President Trump,” the HuffPost reports.

“The statement came in response to concerns that the Senate could simply refuse to hold a trial.”

The Whistleblower Knows How to Write

September 28, 2019 at 10:07 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Jane Rosenzweig: “I can’t tell you what’s going to happen to his blockbuster complaint about the president’s behavior, but I can tell you that the whistle-blower’s college writing instructor would be very proud of him.”

As a writing instructor myself for 20 years, I look at the complaint and see a model of clear writing that offers important lessons for aspiring writers”
