Why Democrats Shouldn’t Worry About Veering Left

July 23, 2019 at 11:26 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Walter Shapiro: “These Democrats-in-disarray columns invariably point out that only with sensible moderation can Donald Trump be defeated in 2020. As for Democratic congressional candidates, particularly first-term House members elected in the 2018 Democratic sweep, their political futures are jeopardized by the extreme antics of ‘the squad’ and the unreasonable demands of these left-wing activists with safe seats.”

“These are fine arguments — and I would probably accept them in a normal political climate. I remember the wipeout years for the Democrats, like 1972 and 1984, when the party was crushed by veering too far from the center in an increasingly conservative political environment.”

“But that was a different era when objective facts still mattered and hyperbole rather than outright lies still ruled political discourse… Trump’s contempt for anything resembling truth has erased this traditional political equation.”

— White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow, quoted by The Hill., dismissing suggestions President Trump fabricated his claim that he was asked to mediate the decades-long dispute between India and Pakistan over the Kashmir territory.

What the Electoral Map Will Look Like In 2024

July 23, 2019 at 11:10 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Magazine: “So we have a pretty clear idea of which states will be winners and losers in congressional reapportionment, based on Census estimates and projections.”

“According to a late-December 2018 analysis from Election Data Services, Texas will pick up three House seats and Florida two; while Arizona, Colorado, Montana, North Carolina, and Oregon will gain one each. New York is projected to lose two seats, while Alabama, Illinois, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and West Virginia are expected to lose one. California and Minnesota are thought to be on the bubble for possibly losing one seat.”

Here’s the 2024 map based on 2016 election results.

Trump Says Omar Will Help Him Win Minnesota

July 23, 2019 at 10:59 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump tweeted that he thinks Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN), a vocal critic and target of his attacks, will help him win Minnesota in 2020.

Said Trump: “In 2020, because of America hating anti-Semite Rep. Omar, & the fact that Minnesota is having its best economic year ever, I will win the State!”

Trump Plan Would Kick 3 Million Off Food Stamps

July 23, 2019 at 10:57 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

CBS News: “The Trump administration is proposing a rule that would limit Americans’ access to food stamps, reportedly removing more than 3 million people from the federal program. The plan would eliminate automatic enrollment in food stamps for poor families who receive welfare benefits.”

Nadler Accuses Justice Department of Coverup

July 23, 2019 at 10:29 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler (D-NY) dismissed an “incredibly arrogant” Justice Department directive from the day before to former special counsel Robert Mueller regarding his forthcoming congressional testimony, The Hill reports..

Said Nadler: “It’s part of the ongoing coverup by the administration to keep information away from the American people.”

GOP Is Not Serious About Deficits

July 23, 2019 at 10:27 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

James Holman: “Mitch McConnell told President Trump privately last month that no politician has ever lost an election for spending more money. That mind-set – caring more about the next election than the next generation – helps explain why the Senate majority leader and the president endorsed a budget deal last night, which still needs to pass Congress, that will raise spending limits by $320 billion while suspending the federal debt ceiling until after both men’s 2020 reelection fights.”

“It also illustrates how hollow so much of the rhetoric from McConnell, Trump and other Republicans was during Barack Obama’s presidency.”

Democrats Don’t Need New Information from Mueller

July 23, 2019 at 10:18 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Greg Sargent: “With Robert Mueller set to appear before Congress on Wednesday, the Justice Department is trying to constrain Mueller’s testimony… Whether intentional or not, this directive serves to pre-frame the hearings, potentially in a manner that politically benefits President Trump.”

“It sets up the core question as this: Will Mueller go outside the four corners of what’s in his report, or will he remain inside them?”

“But Mueller doesn’t have to ‘go beyond’ his report for his testimony to be very damaging to Trump. What’s in his report is already deeply devastating.”

“The obvious game here is to frame the hearings as leaving Democrats with only the last ditch hope of prodding Mueller into revealing new information — and to spin any failure to make that happen as a fizzle for Democrats, and a victory for Trump. In reality, if Democrats can simply bring to life what Mueller did document — and convey that to a national audience — that alone will be a real victory, and an important public service.”

That said, Aaron Blake thinks there are ways for Democrats to get new information from Mueller.

Democrats Shouldn’t Waste Time on Charges of Socialism

July 23, 2019 at 9:59 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “More than a year out from the 2020 elections, the Democratic Party is in a fight for its identity. Meanwhile Trump and the GOP have landed on how they want to identify its members: as socialists.”

“But nuance in this debate won’t matter to Trump and Republicans, argues Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg. It might be tempting for Democrats to focus on pushing back against Trump, but the South Bend, Ind., mayor believes that the best approach is to move forward without taking that into consideration. For Democrats, that will mean spending less time responding to Trump and more time addressing the issues voters that are discussing most; and socialism isn’t one of them.”

Last Chance to Make Mueller Relevant

July 23, 2019 at 8:55 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

First Read: “Robert Mueller’s congressional testimony on Wednesday could very well turn out to be a dud for Democrats.”

“But it also represents their last best chance at selling the middle of the electorate that Mueller’s report contains damaging information about President Trump and his team.”

A Warren or Sanders Win Could Cost Senate Democrats

July 23, 2019 at 8:43 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

July 23, 2019 at 8:40 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) said that she had no regrets about calling for then-Sen. Al Franken (D-MN) to resign over sexual misconduct allegations, NBC News reports.

“Her quotes followed a New Yorker story in which seven current or former Democratic senators expressed regret for calling on him to resign in 2017. Gillibrand was the first senator to come forward.”

Most Republicans Will Tune Out Mueller

July 23, 2019 at 7:42 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Boris Johnson Will Be British Prime Minister

July 23, 2019 at 7:14 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Boris Johnson will become Britain’s next prime minister after being elected leader of the Conservative party, defeating Jeremy Hunt in the party’s leadership contest,” the Guardian reports.

“Johnson will not take office formally until Wednesday afternoon. Theresa May will face her final prime minister’s questions in the House of Commons before tendering her resignation to the Queen.”

“Johnson will then go to Buckingham Palace himself for his appointment to be confirmed – before being driven to Downing Street to give a speech in front of the black door of No 10.”

The Financial Times notes Johnson “stands to inherit a party deeply divided on Brexit, its parliamentary majority on the brink of disappearing, and MPs on alert for an early general election.”

Pelosi Moves to Lock Down Democratic Majority

July 23, 2019 at 7:02 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Detroit Free Press: “With a winning message, strong fundraising and a powerful ground game, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi said she plans to scare off credible challengers, secure a victorious 2020 election cycle and maintain the Democratic majority in the U.S. House of Representatives by November, a year before voters cast their ballots.”

“By November, sitting and potential members of Congress will make the decision on whether they’ll run for Congress in the 2020 cycle, Pelosi told the Detroit Free Press editorial board Monday. And Democratic candidates will have the edge.”
