Gavin Newsom’s Podcast Gets Big Numbers

Rahm Emanuel Wants to Run for President

March 12, 2025 at 6:10 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Jonathan Martin: “Since coming home in January from his stint in Tokyo — a job he repurposed to be American envoy to all of Asia — Emanuel has been as visible as any other Democrat. Never mind that he currently holds no office and hasn’t been on a ballot for a decade.”

“Name the political podcast and Emanuel has likely been on it or will be shortly. He immediately snagged a CNN contract and regular Washington Post column, no small accomplishment for a former official at a moment of retrenchment for news organizations.”

“He’s also hitting the lecture circuit, appearing for paid and gratis gigs before audiences such as the Realtors and the Chicago Economic Club. Emanuel is pointedly avoiding Ivy League campuses and later this month will make his first stop on a service academy tour when he speaks at West Point.”

“Just as striking is to talk to anybody in high-level Democratic politics who knows Emanuel — which is to say most everyone — and hear how matter of fact they are about the inevitability of his candidacy.”

Report Expected to Show Stubbornly High Inflation

March 12, 2025 at 6:03 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Inflation is expected to have stayed stubbornly high in February, an unwelcome sign for the Federal Reserve as it grapples with the prospect of a sharp slowdown in growth as a result of President Trump’s trade war,” the New York Times reports.

“The latest reading of the Consumer Price Index, set for release on Wednesday, is forecast to have risen 2.9 percent from a year earlier, according to estimates from economists compiled by Bloomberg. That would represent a 0.3 percent monthly gain, a deceleration from January’s surprisingly large 0.5 percent increase but high enough to keep the central bank on edge about how it handles price pressures.”

Musk to Put $100 Million in Trump’s Political Operation

March 11, 2025 at 8:33 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Elon Musk has signaled to President Trump’s advisers in recent days that he wants to put $100 million into groups controlled by the Trump political operation,” the New York Times reports.

“It is unheard-of for a White House staffer, even one with part-time status, to make such large political contributions to support the agenda of the boss. But there has never been someone in the direct employ of an administration like Mr. Musk, the world’s wealthiest person, who is leading Mr. Trump’s aggressive effort to shrink the federal government, the Department of Government Efficiency.”

Education Department to Slash Workforce

March 11, 2025 at 6:40 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Education Department announced on Tuesday that it was firing more than 1,300 workers, effectively gutting the agency that manages federal loans for college, tracks student achievement and enforces civil rights laws in schools,” the New York Times reports.

“The layoffs mean that the department, which started the year with 4,133 employees, will now have a work force of about half that size after less than two months with President Trump in office.”

“The cuts could portend an additional move by the Trump administration to essentially dismantle the department, as Mr. Trump has said he wants to do, even though it cannot be closed without the approval of Congress.”

Washington Post: Education Department reducing its staff by half.

House Passes Short Term Funding Bill

March 11, 2025 at 6:38 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“House Republicans are celebrating passing a conservative funding bill through their narrow ranks and jamming the Senate with such a proposal, both for the first time,” the Washington Post reports.

“GOP leadership announced early Tuesday that the House would adjourn and start a week-long district work period earlier than expected. By fleeing town, the House is basically giving the Senate no other option but to pass their bill.”

Trump Now Says He Doesn’t See Recession

March 11, 2025 at 5:08 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Donald Trump downplayed a sharp market selloff spurred by worries that his tariff agenda will drag the world’s largest economy into a downturn, saying he did not foresee the U.S. going into a recession,” Bloomberg reports.

None of This Is Going to End Well

March 11, 2025 at 4:48 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Bret Stephens: “It used to be common knowledge — not just among policymakers and economists but also high school students with a grasp of history — that tariffs are a terrible idea. The phrase ‘beggar thy neighbor’ meant something to regular people, as did the names of Senator Reed Smoot and Representative Willis Hawley. Americans broadly understood how much their 1930 tariff, along with other protectionist and isolationist measures, did to turn a global economic crisis into another world war. Thirteen successive presidents all but vowed never to repeat those mistakes.”

“Until Donald Trump. Until him, no U.S. president has been so ignorant of the lessons of history. Until him, no U.S. president has been so incompetent in putting his own ideas into practice.”

Vance to Visit India

March 11, 2025 at 4:19 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Vice President J.D. Vance will travel to India later this month alongside Second Lady Usha Vance,“ Politico reports.

“It marks Vance’s second foreign trip as vice president after making his world stage debut in France and Germany last month.”

What Elon Musk’s Suit Says About Trump and Power

March 11, 2025 at 4:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “Mr. Musk flexes his by dressing down where all others must dress up. He wears his ‘tech support’ T-shirt around town and to meetings with the president.”

“So when the tech mogul wore a suit and tie twice last week, just like any other working stiff in Washington, it seemed like a sign that maybe some of the old rules of this place — and the ones about fashion and etiquette are among the oldest — were suddenly being applied to this most special of government employees.”

“Somehow when Mr. Musk puts on a nice suit, it has a way of looking like a demotion.”

Elon Musk Wants a Government Shutdown

March 11, 2025 at 3:18 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“As President Donald Trump has been trying to keep House Republicans in line over a continuing resolution to keep the government open through the fall, Elon Musk has expressed a desire for a government shutdown,” Wired reports.

“Sources also tell Wired that Musk has wanted a government shutdown—an aim that runs contrary to the White House’s stated desire to avoid one—in part because it would potentially make it easier to eliminate the jobs of hundreds of thousands of federal workers, essentially achieving a permanent shutdown.”

Ukraine Agrees to 30-Day Ceasefire If Russia Does

March 11, 2025 at 2:43 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Ukraine agreed Tuesday to an immediate 30-day ceasefire negotiated by the United States if Russia accepts the plan,” CNBC reports.

New York Times: “The United States agreed on Tuesday to immediately lift the pause on intelligence sharing and resume military assistance to Ukraine after more than eight hours of meetings in Saudi Arabia where Kyiv said it would support the Trump administration’s proposal for a 30-day cease-fire with Russia.”

“The talks in the coastal city of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, brought fresh momentum to cease-fire negotiations that faltered following a public confrontation at the White House between the Ukrainian and U.S. presidents. The Trump administration had paused all military assistance and intelligence sharing in the aftermath of the meeting.”

U.S. to Require Canadian Visitors to Register

March 11, 2025 at 2:31 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Donald Trump’s administration is preparing a new travel rule that could force Canadians planning to stay in the country for more than 30 days to register their information with the U.S. government and submit to fingerprinting,” Bloomberg reports.

“The draft rule, which is set to take effect April 11, expands requirements for registration and fingerprinting of foreign nationals who cross the US-Canada land border and stay in the U.S. longer for more than a month.”

Tuberculosis Resurgent

March 11, 2025 at 2:30 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “The whole system of finding, diagnosing and treating tuberculosis — which kills more people worldwide than any other infectious disease — has collapsed in dozens of countries across Africa and Asia since President Trump ordered the aid freeze on Jan. 20, Inauguration Day.”

“The United States contributed about half of international donor funding to TB last year and here in Kenya paid for everything from nurses to lab equipment. Trump administration officials have said that other countries should contribute a greater share to global health programs. They say administration is evaluating foreign aid contracts to determine whether they are in the national interest of the United States.”

“While some of the TB programs may ultimately survive, none have received any money for months.”

Cyberattack on X Hit Insecure Servers

March 11, 2025 at 2:20 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A cyberattack that brought down Elon Musk’s X targeted servers that were insufficiently protected from malicious traffic,” Bloomberg reports.

GOP Lawmaker Wants to Force Vote on Proxy Voting

March 11, 2025 at 11:37 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) introduced a rare motion on Monday, seeking to force a vote on proxy voting after she struggled to balance the responsibilities of being a lawmaker and a new parent in the last legislative cycle,” The Hill reports.

“Her discharge petition for House Resolution 164 is backed by 92 representatives but would need 126 additional signatures to cross the required threshold to force a vote on the legislation.”

Judge Blocks Deportation of Student Activist

March 11, 2025 at 11:25 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A federal judge has halted the deportation of a Columbia University graduate student who was detained by immigration authorities for his participation in campus protests over the Israel-Hamas war,” Politico reports.

Michelle Goldberg: “If someone legally in the United States can be grabbed from his home for engaging in constitutionally protected political activity, we are in a drastically different country from the one we inhabited before Trump’s inauguration.”

John Ganz: “Here’s the most important thing about this whole affair: The state cannot make it up as it goes along. It can’t seize people in the night and invent flimsy pretexts later. And if it does, then we no longer live under the rule of law, we live under a police state. And don’t kid yourself: They will not stop at non-citizens.”

Markets Pull Back the Curtain on the White House

March 11, 2025 at 10:55 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump and his advisers are beginning to acknowledge that their promised economic boom won’t come without turbulence.

Over the weekend, Trump refused to rule out a recession, conceding there would be “a period of transition.”
