IRS in Turmoil at Height of Tax Season

March 15, 2025 at 10:50 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

CNN: “As DOGE has set up shop inside the IRS over the past month, the agency has fired thousands of workers and auditors and set out to shutter more than 110 taxpayer assistance offices across the country. Widespread layoffs are in the works, with plans to cut nearly 20% of all IRS employees by May 15.”

“The barnstorming, which has played out at multiple agencies, has thrown the IRS into turmoil at the height of tax season. While the business of processing returns and issuing refunds has been ongoing, sources say these DOGE actions could undermine the long-term operations of the IRS, which handles nearly all accounts receivable for the federal government.”

March 15, 2025 at 10:45 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Friday suspending security clearances of Mark Pomerantz and those who work at Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison,” ABC News reports.

“The order also restricts government access to lawyers and employees at the New York-based law firm.”

Playbook: “Top law firms are debating whether to make a public show of support for two major firms that have come under attack by the Trump administration… But they’re racked by private worries they’d be targeted, too.”

Trump Says Pressure on Columbia Is Just the Beginning

March 15, 2025 at 10:42 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Donald Trump’s crackdown on alleged antisemitism on college campuses is alarming students and instructors who say the administration is trying to outlaw criticism of Israel’s war in Gaza and bend universities to his will,” the Washington Post reports.

“Trump says he’s just getting started…”

“What is clear is that Trump is willing to use the full power of the federal government, including its purse strings, to dramatically change behavior — by both students and administrators — on college campuses. Trump applauded the detention of Columbia University graduate student Mahmoud Khalil and called it ‘the first arrest of many to come.’”

Associated Press: Trump demands unprecedented control at Columbia, alarming scholars and speech groups.

Appeals Court Lets Trump Reinstate Two Executive Orders

March 15, 2025 at 10:40 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “The three-member appeals panel — including two judges appointed by Democratic presidents — lifted a lower court’s injunction that had put the policy on hold last month.”

“The three judges suggested the Trump administration should be allowed to demonstrate that it will abide by anti-discrimination laws and respect First Amendment rights as it implements the executive orders.”

Democratic Shadow Primary Quietly Begins

March 15, 2025 at 7:34 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “Quiet conversations about the next race for the White House are already underway among Democratic strategists, activists and, yes, a stable of would-be, could-be candidates. None would dare announce any such aspiration aloud. Many have yet to decide, even privately, whether they will take steps toward a bid.”

“But why let reality get in the way of a good shadow primary? Across the country, political operatives, donors and journalists are scrutinizing and overanalyzing these Democrats’ words, policy positions and travel schedules for any sign of presidential plotting. And these Democrats are sometimes — if not often — leaving breadcrumbs to lure such attention.”

Putin Demands Ukrainian Troops in Russia Surrender

March 15, 2025 at 7:28 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Vladimir Putin of Russia insisted that Ukraine order some of its forces to surrender to Russia, a striking demand made hours after President Trump said the United States had “very good and productive” discussions with Mr. Putin about a potential cease-fire, the New York Times reports.

Democrats End Up Having a Worse Week Than Trump

March 15, 2025 at 6:47 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Donald Trump’s week was poised to be bruising,” Politico reports.

“Instead, the president is ending it on a political high after he and congressional Republicans closed ranks and, with an assist from the looming specter of DOGE, cornered Democrats into voting to avert a government shutdown on their terms. Now, it’s Democrats who are fighting each other, distracting Washington, at least temporarily, from Trump’s trade war that has wreaked havoc on the stock market.”

Axios: Inside House Dems’ furious anti-Schumer movement.

Consumers and Businesses Send Distress Signal

March 15, 2025 at 6:42 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Wall Street Journal: “President Trump’s stop-and-start trade wars and other rapid-fire policy changes are making Americans feel gloomy about the economy. Their 401(k)s are down, and their expectations for inflation are up. Now they are paring back spending on extras such as vacations and home-improvement projects.”

“The University of Michigan’s closely watched index of consumer sentiment nosedived 11% to 57.9 in mid-March from 64.7 last month. Sentiment among Democrats was the lowest ever recorded, including the depths of the 2008-09 financial crisis. Even Republicans are feeling worse, although many think that any short-term economic pain caused by Trump’s moves will be worth it. On a recent Sunday, Trump declined to rule out a recession.”

“Bleak sentiment about the economy can become a self-fulfilling prophecy. Nervous consumers tend to cut back, which weighs on spending and economic growth. While economists have been marking down their estimates for the economy, they still expect it to grow.”

Trump’s ‘Law and Order’ Speech Breaks All Norms

March 15, 2025 at 6:40 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Donald Trump delivered an unusual, campaign-style speech at Justice Department headquarters Friday, heavy with grievance and meandering from such topics as Al Capone to allegations of judicial corruption as he defied the distance that has traditionally existed between the White House and the federal law enforcement agency,” the Washington Post reports.

CNN: Trump’s public airing of grievances at DOJ was unprecedented.

Rubio Expels South Africa’s U.S. Ambassador

March 14, 2025 at 10:23 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“As he flew back from the Group of 7 allies meeting in Canada on Friday, Secretary of State Marco Rubio made an announcement that essentially expelled South Africa’s ambassador to the United States, Ebrahim Rasool,” the New York Times reports.

“Mr. Rubio wrote on social media that the ambassador was a ‘race-baiting politician who hates America’ and President Trump.”

Democrats Fume at Chuck Schumer

March 14, 2025 at 9:46 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Chuck Schumer is facing one of the most perilous moments of his Senate leadership career,” Politico reports.

“The Senate minority leader came under heavy fire for the second straight day from Democrats enraged at him for backing a Republican bill to avoid a government shutdown, and fallout appears likely to last well past Friday’s vote.”

“A handful of House lawmakers, including some in battleground districts, are floating supporting a primary challenge against him. Activists are organizing efforts to punish him financially. Schumer is facing questions within his own caucus about whether he made strategic errors in handling the high-stakes moment and failed to outline a clear plan about how to deal with the complex politics of a shutdown… Some Democratic senators are even privately questioning whether he should stay on as their leader.”

Trump Accuses News Media of Illegal Behavior

March 14, 2025 at 9:41 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Donald Trump launched some of his harshest attacks yet on the media on Friday, using a speech at the Department of Justice to baselessly accuse outlets including CNN of illegal and corrupt behavior,” CNN reports.

Consumers Are Starting to Crack

March 14, 2025 at 9:40 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

NBC News: “Across earnings calls and investor presentations in recent weeks, retailers and other consumer-facing businesses warned that first-quarter sales were coming in softer than expected and the rest of the year might be tougher than Wall Street thought.”

Senate Votes to Avert Shutdown

March 14, 2025 at 5:08 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The Senate cleared a key procedural hurdle on the House-passed continuing resolution, putting the chamber on a path to averting a midnight shutdown, Reuters reports.

Ten Democrats voted with Minority Leader Chuck Schumer to overcome a filibuster. The vote was 62 to 38.

Trump Uses Justice Department Speech to Vent

March 14, 2025 at 4:23 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump used his Justice Department speech to vent years of frustration and grievance against the department and the FBI — agencies he said had been run by “a corrupt group of hacks and radicals” who had “obliterated trust and goodwill built up over generations,” the Washington Post reports.

Said Trump: “They weaponized the vast powers of our intelligence and law enforcement agencies to try and thwart the will of the American people.”

Maggie Haberman: “One thing that can’t be overemphasized: in addition to Trump’s personal criminal lawyers leading the Justice Department, a number of Trump’s close advisers were swept up in the various investigations he faced. They share the same anger he does about what took place, and believe he is taking a victory lap that he’s entitled to.”

J.D. Vance Expects a TikTok Deal

March 14, 2025 at 4:20 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Vice President JD Vance expressed confidence Friday that a deal to sell TikTok and keep the social media app running in the U.S. would largely be in place by an April deadline, NBC News reports.

Justices to Hear Case on Birthright Citizenship

March 14, 2025 at 3:51 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Supreme Court on Friday afternoon requested responses from states and groups that have challenged the constitutionality of the president’s order ending birthright citizenship for the children of undocumented immigrants and foreign residents,” the New York Times reports.

“The move is a signal that the justices will consider a request by the Trump administration asking the court to lift a nationwide pause on the policy as the underlying court challenges proceed.”
