Trump Bets That Lightning Will Strike America Again

June 20, 2019 at 11:11 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Edward Luce: “The thing about freak accidents is that they do not keep happening. Donald Trump benefited from more than one lightning strike in 2016. His opponent, Hillary Clinton, offered a living, breathing picture of America’s reviled establishment. The director of the FBI, James Comey, was an unusually incompetent investigator. His last-minute intervention helped sway the election. The US electoral college managed to skew a popular defeat for Mr Trump into a victory. Finally, Facebook offered the ideal platform for Vladimir Putin’s fake news blitz.”

“None of these conditions is likely to recur in 2020 — or at least not in the same way. Yet Mr Trump is betting that history will repeat itself.”

Trump Slams Biden and Sanders as ‘Tired’

June 20, 2019 at 10:45 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump told Telemundo that Bernie Sanders and Joe Biden look “tired crazy” and “exhausted.”

Said Trump: “Bernie, Bernie looks like he’s had it. Bernie looks crazy, but he always did. But he looks like a tired crazy right now.”

On Biden, Trump said “he looks like he’s just exhausted. I don’t know what happened to him but he is exhausted and he doesn’t do any work, he’s not working. One thing I found out about this job, to do it right, and I’ve done it right — you have to work hard.”

Trump’s Very Low Ceiling

June 20, 2019 at 10:31 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Aaron Blake: “Most polls have shown a majority of Americans — as many as 57 percent in one poll, but usually a slimmer majority — say they will definitely not vote to reelect Trump. It’s one thing to lack appeal to such a large segment of the population; it’s another for them to rule out supporting you entirely. If this segment of the electorate doesn’t budge, it would make Trump’s reelection very difficult; he’d have to hope these people simply don’t turn out to vote, that he could win with a plurality thanks to third-party candidates and/or that he could carry the electoral college without winning the popular vote (again).”

“As problematic for Trump is that this number seems to be bearing out in early polling — in the form of a ceiling. Most matchups in high-quality national polls have him struggling to climb out of the low 40s, no matter who his opponent is.”

Trump Loses Interest In Venezuela

June 20, 2019 at 10:05 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump has lost interest in Venezuela after U.S. support for a coup failed to produce immediate results, the Washington Post reports.

Trump has lost “patience and interest” in the issue as attempts to remove President Maduro from power have stalled. Trump reportedly “chewed out the staff” in a meeting shortly after the failed takeover at the end of April, and hasn’t really mentioned it much since.

Quote of the Day

June 20, 2019 at 9:45 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“She’s a friend of mine and I’m not going to let anyone in this town with their little blogging fingers divide us. It’s time to be unified.”

— NRCC Chairman Tom Emmer (R-MN), quoted by Politico, downplaying reports of tension over fundraising between him and Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY).

Few Democrats Want a President In Their 70s

June 20, 2019 at 9:22 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Pew Ressearch poll finds just 3% of Democratic or likely Democratic voters think the optimal age for a president is someone in their 70s.

Two Illinois Democrats Join Push for Impeachment Inquiry

June 20, 2019 at 9:10 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Freshman Rep. Sean Casten (D-IL), who flipped a suburban Chicago congressional district in 2018, told the Chicago Sun-Times he backs launching an impeachment inquiry into President Trump.

“His public call stands out because Casten is only the third in this group of 44 to support an impeachment inquiry. Casten joins freshmen Katie Porter of California and Tom Malinkowski of New Jersey – a friend whose office is down the hall from Casten’s.”

Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) also on Wednesday called for a Trump impeachment inquiry, notable since she is part of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s leadership team and the speaker has counseled restraint.

Iran Shoots Down U.S. Drone

June 20, 2019 at 8:20 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“In a major provocation, Iran shot down an unarmed and unmanned U.S. RQ-4A Global Hawk drone while it was flying in international airspace over the Strait of Hormuz Thursday, U.S. Central Command confirmed in a statement,” ABC News reports.

Said Gen. Hossein Salami, commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps: “Shooting down the American spy drone had a clear, decisive, firm and accurate message… We do not intend to engage in war with any country, but we are completely ready for the war. Today’s incident is a clear sign of this accurate message.”

Williamson Calls Vaccine Mandates ‘Orwellian’

June 20, 2019 at 8:17 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Marianne Williamson, one of the 20 contenders for the Democratic presidential nomination in the 2020 election, called mandatory-vaccine policies “Orwellian” at an event in New Hampshire, NBC News reports.

Said Williamson: “To me, it’s no different than the abortion debate. The U.S. government doesn’t tell any citizen, in my book, what they have to do with their body or their child.”

Florida City Agrees to Pay Malware Ransom

June 20, 2019 at 7:55 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Riviera Beach City Council authorized the city’s insurer to pay nearly $600,000 worth of ransom to regain access to data walled off through an attack on the city’s computer systems,” the Palm Beach Post reports.

“The city’s email and computer systems, at City Hall, the city’s Port Center offices and elsewhere, including those that control city finances and water utility pump stations and testing systems, are still only partially back online, two weeks after the ransomware attack was disclosed. But crucial data encrypted by the attackers remains beyond reach and there was no explanation of whether the city has any guarantee that the ransomers will release it if paid.”

“More than 50 cities across the United States, large and small, have been hit by ransomware attacks during the past two years.”

Trump Gambles on an Untested Re-Election Strategy

June 20, 2019 at 7:52 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Time: “Gone is the rickety operation that eked out an upset victory over Hillary Clinton. In its place, advisers boast, is a state-of-the-art campaign befitting an incumbent President. Trump’s campaign is gearing up to spend $1 billion, and may well get there. His team has spent more money, earlier in the campaign, than any re-election bid in recent history. Campaign staff sit in slick offices in a glass-skinned tower overlooking the Potomac River in Arlington, Va. And Trump has won total control of the Republican National Committee, which fought against him for much of 2016.”

“Despite the trappings of convention, however, Trump has for the most part thrown out the playbook for incumbency. The last three two-term Presidents were lifted in important ways by a bipartisan message. Bill Clinton ran on the 1994 crime bill and tax reform. George W. Bush ran on keeping America safe in the wake of 9/11. Barack Obama reminded voters that Osama bin Laden was dead and General Motors was alive.”

“Trump, who lost the popular vote in 2016 and is the only President in the history of Gallup polling never to crack 50% approval, says he’s ready to defy that legacy. ‘I think my base is so strong, I’m not sure that I have to do that,’ he tells Time, after being asked whether he should reach out to swing voters. The mantra of Trump 2020 is ‘turnout, turnout, turnout,’ as campaign manager Brad Parscale puts it. ‘People all think you have to change people’s minds. You have to get people to show up that believe in you.'”

Clyburn Could Endorse Before South Carolina Primary

June 20, 2019 at 7:38 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“For all the debate in Washington about Rep. James Clyburn’s place in the Democratic Party, here in his home state, his status as a kingmaker in the presidential primary is on solid footing,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“The South Carolina Democrat’s ‘World Famous Fish Fry’ on Friday will attract 22 of the 23 Democratic presidential candidates—the most to gather for a single event so far this election cycle. The prior record: 19 candidates attended an Iowa Democratic Party fundraiser earlier this month.”

Clyburn says he could throw his support behind a 2020 candidate but only after a presidential debate is held in South Carolina, likely next year before the primary: “If I were to do it, that’s the time I would be doing it.”

Republicans Nervous Over House Campaign Arm

June 20, 2019 at 7:33 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The House GOP campaign arm is under fire from Republicans who are growing increasingly anxious about the party’s plan to win back the chamber in 2020,” Politico reports.

“Republicans still don’t have an answer to Democrats’ online fundraising behemoth ActBlue. GOP leaders are bickering behind closed doors. The head of recruitment has decided to retire. And some rank-and-file lawmakers are starting to express alarm about the party’s strategy as the campaign ramps up.”

Lawmaker Challenged by Former Intern

June 20, 2019 at 7:07 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-TX), a well-connected Democratic incumbent, is now facing an insurgent primary challenge from Jessica Cisneros (D), a 26-year-old immigration attorney who once interned in his Washington office, CBS News reports.

“The centrist congressman has represented Texas’ 28th congressional district, which stretches from Laredo and other border communities along the Rio Grande to the outskirts of San Antonio, since 2005.”

Said Cisneros: “He might have that ‘D’ next to his name, but in reality he’s been walking and talking like a Republican. He’s Trump’s favorite Democrat.”

Biden Won’t Talk About Son’s Business Dealings

June 20, 2019 at 7:03 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Joe Biden declined to answer questions on the campaign trail this week about his son’s overseas business dealings in countries where the then-vice president was conducting diplomatic work, an issue his political opponents have already begun to wield against him as he wades into the 2020 presidential campaign,” ABC News reports.

Deutsche Bank Faces Criminal Investigation

June 20, 2019 at 6:51 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “The investigation includes a review of Deutsche Bank’s handling of so-called suspicious activity reports that its employees prepared about possibly problematic transactions, including some linked to President Trump’s son-in-law and senior adviser, Jared Kushner.”

Trump Thinks He Can Replace Fed Chair

June 20, 2019 at 6:49 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump has told confidants as recently as Wednesday that he believes he has the authority to replace Jerome Powell as chairman of the Federal Reserve Board,” Bloomberg reports.

“In Trump’s line of thinking, he could demote Powell to be a board governor, but isn’t planning to do so right now.”
