Trump’s Hard Line Softens With World Leaders

July 2, 2019 at 6:15 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump entered his meeting with President Xi Jinping over the weekend promising to take a tough approach on trade negotiations and pressure his Chinese counterpart into a sweeping deal,” the Washington Post reports.

“But the meeting did not produce an agreement — and Trump’s stance seemed to only soften as he announced he was relaxing limits on Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei and delaying new tariffs on Chinese goods in hopes of restarting trade talks with Beijing.”

“Trump’s meetings with Xi and other leaders at the Group of 20 economic summit suggest that despite his promise to use negotiating savvy and personal relationships to extract concessions from rivals or uncooperative allies, he often leaves one-on-one sessions with fellow world leaders without firm agreements in hand.”

Not Much Evidence Online Polls Are Accurate

July 2, 2019 at 6:15 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Nate Cohn: “The transition away from live interview telephone polling is well underway, and online polls now make up the principal source of data on national public opinion.”

“But the alternatives to traditional polling are not fully mature, and the absence of a clear set of standards for online polling research has opened the floodgates to unproven surveys of uncertain quality.”

“Many of the new pollsters have become familiar enough that journalists and readers have started to cite them with confidence. It’s not yet clear they all deserve it.”

Spies Fear McKinsey Hobbled U.S. Intelligence

July 2, 2019 at 6:15 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “For the last four years, the powerhouse firm McKinsey has helped restructure the country’s spying bureaucracy, aiming to improve response time and smooth out communication. Instead, according to nearly a dozen current and former officials who either witnessed the restructuring first-hand or are familiar with the project, the multi-million dollar overhaul has left many within the country’s intelligence agencies demoralized and less effective.”

“These insiders say the efforts have hindered decision-making at key agencies — including the CIA, National Security Agency, and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence. They say McKinsey helped to complicate a well-established linear chain-of-command system, slowing down projects and turnaround time, and applied cookie-cutter solutions to agencies with unique cultures. In the process, numerous employees have become dismayed, saying the efforts have at best been a waste of money and, at worst, made their jobs more difficult.”

Trump Officials Split Over Approach to North Korea

July 2, 2019 at 6:05 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “Some officials are considering a freeze as a first step toward a more comprehensive agreement for Mr. Kim to give up his entire nuclear program. National security adviser John Bolton has long insisted that the North Koreans dismantle their nuclear program and give up their entire arsenal of warheads before getting any rewards.”

“Mr. Bolton and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo had both urged the president to settle for nothing less than a grand deal, but Mr. Pompeo now appears open to considering a gradual approach.”

Trump’s Quest for Superlatives

July 1, 2019 at 8:38 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “More than most presidents, Mr. Trump appears driven by a quest for superlatives — whatever he is doing must be the first, the most, the biggest — and it shapes his policy choices even as he frames his own narrative with the branding skills of a career in business and entertainment.”

“During one news conference on the trip, he used the word ‘best’ nine times, ‘incredible’ 16 times, ‘tremendous’ 28 times and ‘great’ or ‘greatest’ 50 times.”

Sanders Was Outraised by Buttigieg

July 1, 2019 at 8:36 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Bernie Sanders’ campaign manager Faiz Shakir conceded that Mayor Pete Buttigieg likely raised more money last quarter than the Vermont senator, but claimed the discrepancy is due to sharply different fundraising strategies of each campaign, CBS News reports.

Said Shakir: “I think he’ll probably have more money raised than we will. I think a lot of that has to do with the fact of how he is raising his money. Bernie Sanders does not go into closed-door high-dollar fundraisers and solicit money from corporate executives at their homes.”

Hickenlooper Finance Director Jumps to O’Rourke

July 1, 2019 at 8:31 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The national finance director for John Hickenlooper’s presidential campaign is departing and joining rival Beto O’Rourke’s effort,” Politico reports.

“The aide, Dan Sorenson, is leaving the former two-term Colorado governor the day after the deadline for 2nd-quarter fundraising and after last week’s Democratic debate — an ominous sign for a presidential bid that has struggled to gain traction.”

Lawsuit Says Roy Moore Likely Failed Polygraph Test

July 1, 2019 at 8:23 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A lawsuit says Roy Moore ‘likely failed’ a December 2017 polygraph he took in an effort to clear his name from accusations made against him by women during the Senate race that year, the Birmingham News reports.

Military Chiefs Will Appear at July 4th Celebration

July 1, 2019 at 6:39 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump said that the Pentagon would put military tanks on display on Thursday in Washington as part of his plans to turn the Fourth of July celebration in the nation’s capital into a salute to the country’s military prowess,” the New York Times reports.

“The tanks would join an airborne display of the nation’s firepower, including a flight of Air Force One over Washington and a performance by the Navy’s Blue Angel jets. Mr. Trump, who will be speaking at the celebration, has requested that the chiefs for the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines be standing next to him as aircraft from each of their services fly overhead and their respective hymns play on loudspeakers.”

HuffPost: “The Republican National Committee has been offering major donors tickets to Trump’s speech, as have political appointees at the White House and executive branch agencies.”

Trump Says He May Delay Census

July 1, 2019 at 6:13 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump said he’s looking “very strongly” at delaying the 2020 census if the administration is not allowed to add a citizenship question, The Hill reports.

Said Trump: “We’re looking at that. So you can ask other things but you can’t ask whether or not somebody is a citizen? So we are trying to do that. We’re looking at that very strongly.”

Will the Media Help to Re-Elect Trump?

July 1, 2019 at 6:01 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Alexander Heffner: “This doesn’t come naturally to the media. Instead, they renormalize a habitually deceitful president in return for the perception of access. We saw this again Sunday, as some gloated about a groundbreaking presidential North Korea landing without appropriate context. A historic betrayal of American values and acquiescence to authoritarianism would be more accurate.”

“On last Sunday’s Meet the Press interview of President Trump, the first of his presidency, Chuck Todd replicated the approach of ABC’s 30 Hours special, enabling Trump to volley back and forth disinformation… and personal grievances—without any merit or real public policy discussion.”

“In a climate in which he has bashed senselessly their hosts, ABC and NBC chose to invite Trump back to the mainstream and legitimize his hateful rhetoric. They seem intent on giving a platform to the only president to call journalists the enemy of the people (which alone makes Trump the most un-American, anti-constitutionalist president in U.S. history).”

Harris and Warren Surge After Debate

July 1, 2019 at 4:08 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new CNN poll conducted after first Democratic debate finds 22% of backing Joe Biden for the party’s presidential nomination, followed by Kamala Harris at 17%, Elizabeth Warren at 15% and Bernie Sanders at 14%. No one else in the 23-person field tested hits 5%.

That represents a 10-point decline in support for Biden since the last poll in May, while Harris has posted a 9-point increase and Warren has boosted her support by 8 points.

No other candidates have seen significant movement since the last poll.

Trump Lied About Giving Troops a Raise

July 1, 2019 at 3:48 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“During a speech to US troops at the Osan Air Base in South Korea on Sunday, President Trump said that he had given them their first pay increase in almost a decade,” CNN reports.

Said Trump: “And, you know, one thing I didn’t mention: You also got very nice pay raises for the last couple of years. Congratulations. Oh, you care about that. They care about that. I didn’t think you noticed. Yeah, you were entitled. You know, it was close to 10 years before you had an increase. Ten years.”

“His claim isn’t true… Military pay rose every year under Obama.”

Evidence of Hunter’s Affairs Can Be Used In Trial

July 1, 2019 at 3:15 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A federal judge ruled Monday that prosecutors can introduce evidence of Rep. Duncan Hunter’s (R-CA) personal relationships, including alleged affairs, in his criminal trial,” the San Diego Union Tribune reports.

“Last week prosecutors filed a series of motions, including one that spelled out some of Duncan Hunter’s questionable expenditures that prosecutors said were linked to his extramarital affairs with five women, including three lobbyists and two congressional staffers.”

Do Republicans Even Believe in Democracy Anymore?

July 1, 2019 at 2:07 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Michael Tomasky: “A number of observers, myself included, have written pieces in recent years arguing that the Republican Party is no longer simply trying to compete with and defeat the Democratic Party on a level playing field. Today, rather than simply playing the game, the Republicans are simultaneously trying to rig the game’s rules so that they never lose.”

“The aggressive gerrymandering, which the Supreme Court just declared to be a matter beyond its purview; the voter suppression schemes; the dubious proposals that haven’t gone anywhere — yet — like trying to award presidential electoral votes by congressional district rather than by state, a scheme that Republicans in five states considered after the 2012 election and that is still discussed: These are not ideas aimed at invigorating democracy. They are hatched and executed for the express purpose of essentially fixing elections.”

Study Suggests Russian Trolls Impacted Election

July 1, 2019 at 2:01 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A new study found that for every 25,000 retweets that a known Russian troll account received during the 2016 election, Donald Trump’s poll numbers jumped 1%,” Axios reports.

“Retweets did not have a similar effect on Hillary Clinton’s poll numbers.”

“Caveat: Correlation does not always mean causation. If a Trump talking point encouraged a particularly viral Tweet, for example, it may have also encouraged a change in Trump’s polling on its own.”

Trump Fumes About New York State Investigations

July 1, 2019 at 1:42 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump accused New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) of using New York Attorney General Letitia James (D) to target his businesses for political purposes, claiming in an afternoon tweetstorm that the state sues “for everything” and is “always in search of a crime,” NBC News reports.

Said Trump: “It is very hard and expensive to live in New York. Governor Andrew Cuomo uses his Attorney General as a bludgeoning tool for his own purposes. They sue on everything, always in search of a crime. I even got sued on a Foundation which took Zero rent & expenses & gave away more money than it had.”
