Gillibrand Proposes Voucher System to Clean Up Politics

May 1, 2019 at 8:27 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) unveiled a plan on Wednesday to give every voter up to $600 in what she calls “Democracy Dollars” that they can donate to federal candidates for office, NBC News reports.

“Under Gillibrand’s plan, every eligible voter could register for vouchers to donate up to $100 in a primary election and $100 in a general election each cycle, either all at once or in $10 increments to one or more candidates over time. Each participant would get a separate $200 pool for House, Senate and presidential contests for a total maximum donation of $600 for those federal offices.”

We Still Have No Defense Secretary

May 1, 2019 at 8:16 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Jonathan Bernstein: “We’ve hit another milestone in irresponsible government: May 1 marks four full months during which the U.S. has had only an acting secretary of defense, with no one nominated for the formal position. The previous record was one day. It’s a disgrace. Or, rather, going three weeks with only an acting secretary of homeland security – as Donald Trump’s administration is also currently doing – is a disgrace. We’ve gone way beyond that at the Pentagon.”

Most Democrats Say Candidate Age Is a Factor

May 1, 2019 at 8:09 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Reuters/Ipsos poll finds that 54% of all Democrats said they would be less likely to support a presidential candidate over 70 years old while more than a third said they would be less likely to vote for a candidate younger than 40.  About a quarter of all Democrats said a White House candidate’s age did not matter.

Trump Goes on Attack Against Biden

May 1, 2019 at 7:54 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Donald Trump really has a thing about Joe Biden,” USA Today reports.

“Trump’s aggressive campaign against the new Democratic presidential candidate triggered what may have been his busiest morning ever on Twitter Wednesday.”

“More than 60 retweets in less than 20 minutes.”

Daily Beast: “The retweet rampage was unusual in itself, but the twist came when one of his supposed supporters changed their username to ‘Fuck Donald Trump.'”

Quote of the Day

May 1, 2019 at 7:24 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Three times a week the Senate Republicans meet for lunch… And occasionally they walk into that chamber and take a vote or two or three on judges. That is the sum total of the Senate’s work today. Mitch McConnell has effectively turned the United States Senate into a very expensive lunch club.”

— Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT), quoted by The Hill.

Emails Show How Taxpayers Pay at Mar-a-Lago

May 1, 2019 at 7:19 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

ProPublica: “The bill was sent to the State Department, which objected to covering it. It was then forwarded to the White House, which paid the tab. The unusual cocktail hour underscores a unique push and pull in the current administration: Donald Trump’s White House pays a bill and Donald Trump’s club reaps the revenue.”

“The premium liquor costs are only the beginning of government spending at Mar-a-Lago that emerges in hundreds of pages of receipts and email correspondence between Trump Organization employees and staffers for the State Department, which oversees presidential diplomatic travel and works with the Secret Service and White House. The emails show that the president’s company refused to agree to what was essentially a bulk-purchase agreement with the federal government, and that it charged the maximum allowable federal rate for hotel rooms. The Trump Organization could be obstinate when it came to rates for, say, function rooms at Mar-a-Lago, a problem that was eased when the president signed a law lifting the maximum ‘micro-purchase’ the government can make.”

Biden Is Running Like He’s Already the Nominee

May 1, 2019 at 7:08 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“In the opening days of his 2020 campaign, former Vice President Joe Biden has gone all-in on the general election, positioning himself as the eventual Democratic nominee rather than scrapping with the 19 other wannabes,” Axios reports.

“This isn’t an accident. Biden strategists believe the former V.P. has the luxury of thinking long term rather than scrambling for liberal street credibility.”

Barr Is Not Going to Have a Good Day

May 1, 2019 at 6:35 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Playbook: “Bill Barr is likely to get a rough ride today in his highly anticipated hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee. Democrats will press the attorney general about the bombshell news — which broke on the eve of his testimony — that special counsel Robert Mueller had sent him a previously undisclosed letter disputing Barr’s summary of his work.”

“Hill Democrats are blasting Barr, accusing him of misleading the public and demanding he release Mueller’s letter. Some say he should resign. They’re also insisting the special counsel testify before Congress, but say the Justice Department is slow-walking their attempts to lock in a hearing date.”

Trump Approval At Two-Year High

May 1, 2019 at 6:30 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new CNN poll finds President Trump’s approval rating remains largely negative — 52% disapprove and 43% approve — but that approval figure is the highest — by one point — since a CNN poll completed around the 100-day mark of his time in office.

Key finding: “The American public increasingly feels that Democrats in Congress are going too far in investigating the President — 44% say Democrats are doing too much on that score, up from 38% saying so in March. That shift stems largely from independents, 46% of whom now say congressional Democrats are going too far.”

Hogan Has a Super PAC

May 1, 2019 at 6:29 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan (R) “has what appears to be a super PAC, a development sure to stoke speculation that Maryland’s chief executive might challenge President Trump in the Republican Primary in 2020,” the Washington Examiner reports.

Julian Assange Sentenced In Britain

May 1, 2019 at 6:26 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A British court sentenced Julian Assange, the WikiLeaks founder, to 50 weeks in jail on Wednesday for jumping bail when he took refuge in Ecuador’s Embassy in London seven years ago,” the New York Times reports.

“His complex legal travails are far from over: The United States is seeking Mr. Assange’s extradition for prosecution there, and officials in Sweden have left open the possibility that he could face criminal charges in that country, as well.”

Alabama Bill Would Ban Nearly All Abortions

April 30, 2019 at 11:28 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A bill making it a crime for a doctor to perform an abortion passed in the Alabama House of Representatives Tuesday 74 to 3, the Birmingham News reports.

The bill “does not include any exceptions for instances of rape or incest, which has garnered criticism from both pro- and anti-abortion groups.”

Justice Department Stalling on Mueller Testimony

April 30, 2019 at 10:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“House Democrats tell The Daily Beast they’ve been told Special Counsel Robert Mueller is willing to testify before them about his report on Russian interference in the 2016 election but that the Department of Justice has been unwilling to set a date for it to happen.”

“The impasse comes as lawmakers have grown increasingly frustrated over Attorney General Bill Barr’s handling of the release of the Mueller probe and as other Trump World figures have declined to appear before congressional committees.”

Virtual Caucuses Could Skew Iowa’s Electorate Older

April 30, 2019 at 9:17 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The tradition-bound Iowa caucuses are set to allow some online voting next year and among the likely beneficiaries are older voters, who’ll press candidates to focus on issues such as prescription drug prices, Social Security and Medicare,” Bloomberg reports.

“Boosted participation by those 65 and older — a demographic that already accounts for more than a quarter of the Democratic turnout in the caucuses — could provide even more incentive for presidential hopefuls to pitch to voters who otherwise might not venture out on a winter night to attend in person.”

Trump’s World Still Faces 16 Criminal Probes

April 30, 2019 at 9:09 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Garrett Graff: “Back in December, I ran down the 17 investigations, which at the time focused on questions about Trump’s world and Russian influence in the US… Today, perhaps half of those cases have more or less wrapped up.”

“That leaves open at least eight of the original 17, as well at least another eight new cases that have emerged in recent months. Effectively everything with a Russian nexus appears to be over, leaving a dozen cases focused on Trump world’s finances.”

“In other words, Trump’s world still appears to face 16 known criminal and civil probes, from as many as a dozen different federal, state, and local prosecutors.”

Mueller Said Barr’s Letter Distorted Probe Findings

April 30, 2019 at 7:11 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Special counsel Robert Mueller wrote a letter in late March complaining to Attorney General William Barr that a four-page memo to Congress describing the principal conclusions of the investigation into President Trump “did not fully capture the context, nature, and substance” of Mueller’s work, the Washington Post reports.

“Days after Barr’s announcement, Mueller wrote a previously unknown private letter to the Justice Department, which revealed a degree of dissatisfaction with the public discussion of Mueller’s work that shocked senior Justice Department officials.”

New York Times: “The letter adds to the growing evidence of a rift between them and is another sign of the anger among the special counsel’s investigators about Mr. Barr’s characterization of their findings, which allowed Mr. Trump to wrongly claim he had been vindicated.”

Effort to Get Trump’s State Tax Return Advances

April 30, 2019 at 6:25 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Legislation that would allow U.S. congressional committees to ask for President Trump’s state tax returns is a step closer to getting a vote in New York’s Democrat-controlled Senate,” the AP reports.

“The measure would authorize New York’s Tax Department to release state tax returns to a congressional committee if requested.”
