The Appeasement of Donald Trump

April 26, 2019 at 1:49 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Andrew Sullivan: “The definition of appeasement, according to Dictionary.com, is ‘to bring to a state of peace, quiet, ease, calm, or contentment; pacify; soothe: i.e. to appease an angry king’ and to ‘yield or concede to the belligerent demands of (a nation, group, person, etc.) in a conciliatory effort, sometimes at the expense of justice or other principles.’”

“That’s where we are aren’t we? We are appeasing an angry king. And the usual result of appeasement is that the angry king banks every concession and, empowered and emboldened by his success, gets more aggressive and more power hungry. Far from restraining him, appeasement gives him time to amass strength, until there’s no restraining him at all. By the time it’s absolutely clear that he is a tyrant, it’s too late. That’s the core narrative of every Shakespeare play that charts a historical bid for absolute power. And every one of those plays is a tragedy.”

April 26, 2019 at 1:43 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) criticized Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) for ignoring a series of bills passed by the Democratic House, The Hill reports.

Democrats Hold Big Edge on Health Care

April 26, 2019 at 1:21 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Associated Press: “Democrats enjoy a 17 percentage point advantage over Republicans in Americans’ assessments of whom they trust more to handle health care, 40% to 23%. That compares with a public more evenly divided over which party would better handle several other major areas of national policy.”

“Among all Americans, 42% support a single-payer plan like the one espoused by [Bernie] Sanders, while 31% express opposition. … The partisan gap narrows significantly, however, for the option of Americans buying into a government program. Overall, 53% support the buy-in option, with 17% opposed and 29% on the fence.”

Biden Intends to Seek Second Term If Elected

April 26, 2019 at 1:01 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

How Trump Plotted Revenge Against the Democrats

April 26, 2019 at 12:51 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Daily Beast: “In multiple conference calls and closed-door gatherings at the White House that have taken place since January, the president began mapping out, with both White House and outside counsel, how to handle the coming onslaught of congressional probes and subpoenas aimed at his administration, his family, and his business empire.”

“By February, Trump was actively asking those around him about the ways in which subpoenas from Democratic-controlled House committees could be fiercely challenged, a senior administration official said. By that time, those close to Trump say he had already settled, firmly, on a path forward.”

“President Trump’s opinion—an assessment reinforced by the advice of his lawyers and friends—was that he and his legal war council shouldn’t give an inch to congressional investigators and liberal lawmakers.”

Mueller Prosecutors Concluded Trump Obstructed Justice

April 26, 2019 at 11:57 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Murray Waas: “Prosecutors working for Special Counsel Robert Mueller concluded last year that they had sufficient evidence to seek criminal charges against President Trump for obstruction of justice over the president’s alleged pressuring of then FBI Director James Comey in February 2017 to shut down an FBI investigation of the president’s then national security adviser, Michael Flynn.”

“Privately, the two prosecutors, who were then employed in the special counsel’s office, told other Justice Department officials that had it not been for the unique nature of the case—the investigation of a sitting president of the United States, and one who tried to use the powers of his office to thwart and even close down the special counsel’s investigation—they would have advocated that he face federal criminal charges.”

April 26, 2019 at 11:45 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The Kansas state Supreme Court ruled that women “have the right to end a pregnancy, in a decision that sets up a bitter fight among lawmakers over abortion,” the Wichita Eagle reports.

April 26, 2019 at 11:42 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Trump Saved Jeanine Pirro’s Job

April 26, 2019 at 11:23 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Gabriel Sherman: “Inside Fox, staffers speculated Pirro would be fired, two sources told me, but Trump pre-empted such a move by calling Rupert Murdoch to complain about her suspension. Fox agreed to allow Pirro to come back on the air but cut her opening monologue, a venue for her most incendiary rhetoric. When Trump found out about that, he called Rupert again, a source said. A compromise was proposed: Pirro could return and deliver a shortened version of her opening statement.”

Said one source: “Trump called Rupert, and Rupert put pressure on the executives.”

TurboTax Deliberately Hides Its Free File Page

April 26, 2019 at 11:23 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

ProPublica: “This week, we reported on how TurboTax uses deceptive design and misleading advertising to trick lower-income Americans into paying to file their taxes, even though they are eligible to do it for free.”

“There’s a new wrinkle: It turns out, Intuit, the maker of TurboTax, is deliberately hiding the truly free edition — TurboTax Free File — from Google Search.”

“In exchange for the IRS promising not to create its own free, online filing tool, Intuit, H&R Block and other companies signed a deal to offer Free File options to lower-income Americans.”

April 26, 2019 at 10:34 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“For years, President Trump has insisted it’s impossible to find Americans to fill seasonal jobs at his hotels, resorts, and wineries, leaving him no choice but to hire foreign guest workers instead,” BuzzFeed News reports.

“But government records… reveal for the first time that at least 58 US workers applied for the temporary jobs as cooks, servers, and housekeepers at Mar-a-Lago and other Trump resorts from early 2014 through mid-2018.”

“Only one of them appears to have been hired.”

When asked how he would beat Biden in a possible 2020 match up, Trump predicted: “I think we beat him easily.”

Trump Says He’s Rooting for Buttigieg

April 26, 2019 at 9:49 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washingiton Post: “At the end of a 45-minute live interview with Fox News’s Sean Hannity… Trump did not elaborate on why Buttigieg is his favored candidate and didn’t have anything negative to say about the young South Bend, Ind., mayor, other than that he doubted he’d win the crowded primary.”

Said Trump: “I hope he would. I’m rooting for him, but he is not going to make it.”

Trump also called Beto O’Rourke a “fluke” and said Sen. Kamala Harris has a “little bit of a nasty wit.”
