GOP Splits Over Hate Resolution

March 8, 2019 at 6:28 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Playbook: “23 House Republicans voted against a resolution Thursday evening that condemned hate against many groups, including Jews and Muslims, in the wake of Rep. Ilhan Omar’s comments that suggested supporters of Israel might have dual loyalty — remarks that were widely viewed as anti-Semitic. Every Democrat voted yes.”

“There is serious, serious anger — seething, it’s fair to say — at the top levels of the House GOP that Republicans muddled their message with a split on this vote. All week, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy’s leadership team managed to keep his troops in line, allowing Democrats to spend days upon days tripping all over themselves. Now, they have taken a bit of the spotlight off Democrats for reasons that are clear to no one.”

“There were two options when it came to this vote, according to top lawmakers and aides: Either every single Republican had to be for the resolution, or everyone needed to be against it. Now that nearly two dozen Republicans voted no, the party is in the mushy middle, unable to define where it stood.”

Trump Inauguration Took Money from Shell Companies

March 8, 2019 at 6:27 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Donald Trump’s inauguration received tens of thousands of dollars from shell companies that masked the involvement of a foreign contributor or others with foreign ties,” The Guardian reports.

“The Guardian has identified the creators of three obscure firms that contributed money to Trump’s inaugural committee, which collected a record $107m as he entered the White House in 2017.”

Gillibrand Struggles to Win Endorsements

March 8, 2019 at 6:25 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand is still searching for a first presidential endorsement from colleagues in New York’s delegation, leaving her the only senator running in 2020 without any home-state congressional backing. The New York Democrat, who is still in the exploratory phase of her presidential bid, is working behind the scenes to curry support among her colleagues,” Politico reports.

“Gillibrand is having lunch with House members — some for the first time — and hosting informal drinks with the state delegation next week. She’s made phone calls to them and asked others for help in shoring up endorsements. But, so far, no one has jumped on board.”

Trump Seeks Payment from Allies

March 8, 2019 at 6:20 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Bloomberg: “The administration is drawing up demands that Germany, Japan and eventually any other country hosting U.S. troops pay the full price of American soldiers deployed on their soil — plus 50 percent or more for the privilege of hosting them, according to a dozen administration officials and people briefed on the matter. In some cases, nations hosting American forces could be asked to pay five to six times as much as they do now under the ‘Cost Plus 50’ formula.”

Advisers Urge Trump to Defer 2020 Rallies

March 8, 2019 at 6:13 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“As he watches the 2020 Democratic candidates fire up campaign crowds, President Donald Trump is itching to upstage them with rallies of his own. Not so fast, say Trump’s political advisers, who are arguing that Trump’s best asset is the White House — and that he should make the most of it,” Politico reports.

“The rambunctious rallies can come later, they say. For now, Trump’s Republican allies and campaign officials believe an early re-election strategy built around his role as chief executive in dignified settings like the Oval Office and the Rose Garden will carry more weight with voters than his signature freewheeling arena speeches.”

McConnell Works to Freeze Support for Campaign Bill

March 8, 2019 at 6:05 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) is pulling out all the stops to make sure not a single Republican senator backs the campaign finance and ethics reform bill that House Democrats are set to pass on Friday,” The Hill reports.

“McConnell, a longtime opponent of campaign finance reform who battled the late Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) over the issue, made clear in December that the House proposal would never see floor time in the Senate.”

“He’s continued to pummel the legislation, sending a stern warning to any GOP colleague who may be thinking about supporting it.”

Entertainment Weekly: “Running With Beto, a feature documentary following Beto O’Rourke’s frenetic campaign as he criss-crossed the Lone Star State, visiting all 254 counties in two years, will make its world premiere Saturday at the SXSW Film Festival, before airing on HBO on May 28.”

Manafort Sentenced to 47 Months

March 7, 2019 at 7:03 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Paul Manafort, who once served as President Trump’s campaign chairman, was sentenced to nearly four years in prison Thursday for cheating on his taxes and bank fraud — a spectacular fall for a once high-flying political consultant who told the judge he is now ‘humiliated and ashamed,'” the Washington Post reports.

“Manafort had faced up to 24 years in prison under federal sentencing guidelines, but U.S. District Court Judge T.S. Ellis called that calculation ‘excessive’ and sentenced him instead to 47 months.”

Holder Says Democrats Should Consider Court Packing

March 7, 2019 at 4:52 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Former Attorney General Eric Holder that the next Democratic president should “seriously” consider adding additional seat to the United States Supreme Court should they be elected alongside a Democratic majority in the Senate, the Daily Beast reports.

“Holder’s willingness to entertain the idea of court packing makes him one of the most senior Democratic officials to do so. To date, virtually all elected Democrats have either ignored the proposal or dismissed it out of hand.”

Delaware Takes Up Popular Vote Proposal

March 7, 2019 at 4:27 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The Delaware state Senate “is set to vote on having the state join other states that want to pool their Electoral College votes for the presidential candidate who wins the national popular vote,” the AP reports.

“Eleven Democratic-leaning states and the District of Columbia already have voted to enter the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact. Democrat-controlled Colorado will soon join the list, giving the compact 181 of the 270 electoral college votes needed to elect the president.”

Is the Mueller Report Coming on Friday?

March 7, 2019 at 3:36 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Former CIA Director John Brennan on MSNBC:

I think Robert Mueller wants to be able to conclude his work and turn over the investigative threads to the Southern District of New York, the Eastern District of Virginia and other jurisdictions as appropriate. I wouldn’t be surprised if, for example, this week on Friday – not knowing anything about it – but Friday is the day the grand jury indictments come down.

And, this Friday is better than next Friday, because next Friday is the 15th of March, which is the Ides of March, and I don’t think Robert Mueller will want to have that dramatic flair of the Ides of March when he’ll be delivering what I think are going to be indictments, the final indictments, as well as the report to the Attorney General.

If anybody from the Trump family, extended family, is going to be indicted, it would be the final act of Mueller’s investigation.

Trump Pressuring Senators Not to Overturn His Declaration

March 7, 2019 at 3:25 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The White House has been quietly pressuring Republicans in recent days not to buck President Trump and vote in favor of a resolution that would overturn his national emergency declaration on the southern border, warning those who don’t get in line that there could be 2020 election consequences,” CNN reports.

“Trump’s staff is looking at this two ways: If only four Republicans support the resolution to overturn his emergency declaration, it won’t be as significant of a problem because some opposition is expected. But if that number grows to, say, 10 Republican senators or more, officials are worried about the potential negative optics of opposition from many members of his own party.”

Bonus Quote of the Day

March 7, 2019 at 1:26 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“I actually long for a dull day.”

— Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME), quoted by the Lewiston Sun-Journal.

Tennessee House Passes Fetal Heartbeat Bill

March 7, 2019 at 12:56 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Tennessee House of Representatives passed a controversial bill Thursday that would ban abortions after a fetal heartbeat is detected, legislation that could become among the most restrictive in the nation,” the Tennessean reports.

“The 99-member House took up the bill… though some members of the House Republican caucus ahead of the vote remained hesitant about moving forward with the legislation as it is currently written.”

“Most of the GOP caucus ultimately voted for the bill.”

Sherrod Brown Will Not Run for President

March 7, 2019 at 12:44 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) announced that he will not mount a 2020 presidential bid, saying that he believes the best way for him to serve the country is in the U.S. Senate, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.

“Brown’s decision comes as something of a surprise. He recently finished his tour of the early-primary states – Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada and South Carolina – and as recently as the weekend hinted that he was going to jump in.”

“His star had been rising as a possible contender, viewed as the kind of candidate who could bring voters in Midwestern states back to the Democratic Party.”

Trump Settles on His Reelection Message

March 7, 2019 at 11:58 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Ron Brownstein: “In his marathon speech to a gathering of conservative activists last weekend, Donald Trump unloaded more than 16,000 words, according to the official White House transcript.”

“But amid all the meandering and asides, the belittling taunts and geysers of grievance, Trump may have synthesized the essence of his reelection strategy in just three words toward the back end of his two-hour harangue: ‘I’ll protect you.'”

“With that concise phrase, Trump revealed volumes about his view of the electorate and the coalition that he hopes will carry him to a second term. The comment underscored his determination to convince his followers of a two-stage proposition: First, that they are ‘under siege,’ as he put it, by an array of forces that he presented as either hostile to their interests or contemptuous of their values, and second, that only he can shield them from those threats.”
