When Germany Votes, It Will Be About the Economy

February 21, 2025 at 7:18 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “The German election has in part focused on hot-button issues like immigration and more recently on the threat to the Atlantic alliance presented by President Trump. But the overriding concern in daily German life, according to interviews and polls, and the thing most likely to drive the choice of voters, is the nation’s anemic economy.”

“Business executives, workers and politicians alike agree that the next German chancellor must move quickly to repair the country’s ailing industrial sector, or risk economic and political disaster for years to come.”

Wall Street Journal: Why Germany’s confidence is shattered and its economy is kaput.

Trump Nearly Pulled All Support for Ukraine

February 21, 2025 at 7:14 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky angered Donald Trump so much during the peace talks with Russia that Trump was on the verge of withdrawing American military support from Ukraine,” Axios reports.

“The conflict between Trump and Zelensky escalated into a war of words between the two that scared European allies who are worried about emboldening Russian dictator Vladimir Putin and rewarding his brutal expansionism.”

Quote of the Day

February 21, 2025 at 6:33 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“I support President Trump and I believe that most of his policies on national security are right. I believe things are pretty good. But what I’m telling you, whoever believes that there is any space for Vladimir Putin and the future of a stable globe, better go to Ukraine, they better go to Europe, they better invest the time to understand that this man is a cancer and the greatest threat to democracy in my lifetime.”

— Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC), quoted by the Raleigh News & Observer.

The Downside of ‘Flooding the Zone’

February 21, 2025 at 6:19 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Playbook: “Much has been made of Trump 2.0’s use of ‘flooding the zone’ to overwhelm its perceived opponents and implement its policy agenda. But the flip side of flooding the zone is that it can be difficult to drive a coherent message; you’re trying to occupy the same zone you’ve already overstuffed with news.”

“Inasmuch as the glut of news itself presents Trump as a man of action, that can be helpful to his agenda. But if those cuts are instead seen as simply chaotic and haphazard, or contribute to a sense that Trump is not actually in control and that Musk has been left to free-agent his way through the government, it carries real political risk for their entire project.”

“There’s an important distinction between controlled chaos and just, well, chaos.“

GOP Lawmakers Get Blowback on DOGE

February 21, 2025 at 6:12 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A growing number of congressional Republicans are desperately trying to back-channel with White House officials as President Donald Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency ramps up its slash-and-burn firings of federal workers,” Politico reports.

“GOP lawmakers unleashed a frantic flurry of calls and texts after federal agencies undertook the latest firings this past weekend, with Republicans particularly worried about cuts affecting public safety and health roles.”

Playbook: “As Elon Musk brandished a chainsaw onstage at CPAC yesterday, it wasn’t just those with front row seats running for cover. A number of Congressional Republicans are starting to flee the blowback of his Department of Government Efficiency’s slash-and-burn approach to federal budget cuts, driven by growing evidence of a groundswell of concern among groups of ordinary voters.”

The Senate Passed Its Budget

February 21, 2025 at 5:55 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Punchbowl News: “At 4:46 a.m., the Senate passed its ‘skinny’ budget resolution after a nearly 10-hour vote-a-rama, the first step in enacting President Donald Trump’s sweeping legislative agenda.”

“There are two ways to look at this: This resolution is a bit out of step with the Trump administration. Trump publicly said Wednesday that he likes the much broader House GOP resolution better and hopes Hill Republicans rally around that.”

“But to their credit, Senate Republicans understand that Trump’s moods and preferences shift like the wind. They averted a last-minute disaster by getting Trump to bless the process and passed their budget resolution.”

GOP Lawmaker Booed at Town Hall Meeting

February 20, 2025 at 10:18 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Rich McCormick (R-GA) was hit with boos and catcalls as he struggled to answer a pointed question from a resident on whether President Trump was moving toward “tyranny.”

Judge Warns Trump Officials Not to Dodge Order

February 20, 2025 at 10:14 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A federal judge delivered a stern warning to the Trump administration that it must abide by a court order to unfreeze foreign-aid funding, but he stopped short Thursday of holding administration officials in contempt of court for continuing to hold up some of the money,” Politico reports.

“In a seven-page order, U.S. District Court Judge Amir Ali seemed troubled by complaints from aid groups that much of the funding remained on hold despite his Feb. 13 order suspending the blanket freeze put in place by the Trump administration.”

Justice Department Broadens Clemency for Capitol Rioters

February 20, 2025 at 9:30 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Justice Department now says that President Donald Trump’s clemency for Jan. 6 rioters covers unrelated crimes that were discovered during FBI searches stemming from the attack on the Capitol,” Politico reports.

“Federal prosecutors revealed the new legal position this week in court papers seeking to drop gun charges against two former Jan. 6 defendants. The guns in question were found at the two men’s homes during the Jan. 6 investigation, but the alleged gun crimes themselves were not connected to the riot.”

GOP Lawmaker Says Trump Is ‘Out of Control’

February 20, 2025 at 8:45 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Troy Balderson (R-OH) described President Trump’s flurry of executive orders as “getting out of control,” saying that only Congress can do certain things, the Columbus Dispatch reports.

Said Balderon: “Congress has to decide whether or not the Department of Education goes away. Not the president, not Elon Musk. Congress decides.”

Trump Again Suggests He’ll Run for a Third Term

February 20, 2025 at 8:43 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Donald Trump on Thursday again raised the prospect of serving for an unconstitutional third term, asking a crowd at a White House event whether he should run again and receiving audience chants of ‘Four more years!,'” the Washington Post reports.

“The suggestion followed a stretch of days in which Trump referred to himself as a king and quoted a dictator in suggesting that he was immune from following laws — all while his administration has continued pushing the bounds of presidential power.”

Trump’s Putinization of America

February 20, 2025 at 8:26 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Susan Glasser: “Trump’s overt endorsement of a pro-Putin foreign policy has, understandably, shaken the world in the last few days. Just as jarring, in my view, has been Trump’s embrace of Putin-like tactics at home, a hallmark of his return to power which has unfolded with a speed and ferocity far different than what Trump was able to pull off in his first term.”

Trump May Have Just Ended the Florida Governor’s Race

February 20, 2025 at 8:20 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Donald Trump brought an early end Thursday to the speculation around his favorite for the 2026 Florida governor’s race in a post on Truth Social, endorsing loyalist Rep. Byron Donalds for the job,” Politico reports.

“The president’s backing of Donalds is likely to have a chilling effect on the race in Florida, a state Trump won by 13 points in November and that he has called home since 2019.”

Trump Expected to Take Control of the Postal Service

February 20, 2025 at 8:05 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Donald Trump is preparing to dissolve the leadership of the U.S. Postal Service and absorb the independent mail agency into his administration, potentially throwing the 250-year-old mail provider and trillions of dollars of e-commerce transactions into turmoil,” the Washington Post reports.

“Trump is expected to issue an executive order as soon as this week to fire the members of the Postal Service’s governing board and place the agency under the control of the Commerce Department and Secretary Howard Lutnick, according to six people familiar with the plans, who spoke on the condition of anonymity out of fear of reprisals.”

Musk’s Private Security Deputized by U.S. Marshals

February 20, 2025 at 8:03 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The US Marshals Service has deputized members of Elon Musk’s private security detail, giving them certain rights and protections of federal law enforcement agents,” CNN reports.

Trump Deletes Database Tracking Police Misconduct

February 20, 2025 at 6:20 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The first nationwide database tracking misconduct by federal police officers has been shut down by President Donald Trump, the Justice Department confirmed, deleting a resource experts said improved public safety by helping prevent bad cops from jumping to new agencies and starting over with clean records,” the Washington Post reports.

“The database was first proposed by Trump in 2020 in the wake of the police killing of George Floyd. But it wasn’t created until two years later when a Joe Biden executive order launched the National Law Enforcement Accountability Database. Trump issued an order last month revoking Biden’s orders, and the database.”
