“The parents of FTX co-founder Sam Bankman-Fried are exploring ways to secure a pardon for the onetime crypto billionaire from President Donald Trump,” Bloomberg reports.

“Stanford Law School Professors Joseph Bankman and Barbara Fried had meetings in recent weeks with lawyers and other figures considered to be in Trump’s orbit about clemency for their 32-year-old son, who was sentenced to 25 years in prison for fraud, the person said. It’s unclear if outreach has been made to the White House.”

TRUMP: Because I have common sense, OK? And unfortunately a lot of people don’t.

Tulsi Gabbard’s Prospects Dim

January 30, 2025 at 1:20 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Senators from both parties expressed doubt about Tulsi Gabbard’s judgment during her confirmation hearing to be President Donald Trump’s director of national intelligence, renewing concerns about her prospects for Senate approval,” Punchbowl News reports.

“Testifying before the Senate Intelligence Committee, Gabbard came out swinging against her ‘political opponents’ as Democratic and Republican senators alike grilled the ex-Democrat about her previous statements and views on key national security issues, especially as it relates to Russia.”

“We also reported exclusively that Gabbard’s opening statement initially included references to Russia-related claims that Trump has pushed over the years, in addition to a swipe at President George W. Bush over the Iraq War. Those were removed from the final version of her opening statement.”

Trump Blames DEI and Democrats for Plane Crash

January 30, 2025 at 12:37 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump blamed diversity requirements at the Federal Aviation Administration and his two Democratic predecessors for the midair collision over the Potomac River on Wednesday night, saying that standards for air traffic controllers had been too lax,” the New York Times reports.

“Mr. Trump cited no evidence, and even admitted when pressed that the investigation had only just begun…”

“His instant focus on diversity reflected his instinct to immediately frame major events through his political or ideological lens, whether the facts fit or not.”

GOP Lawmaker Suggests DEI Led to Plane Crash

January 30, 2025 at 11:48 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Andy Ogles (R-TN) suggested Thursday that a fatal plane crash could have been caused partly by DEI, or diversity, equity and inclusion in government hiring, the HuffPost reports.

Said Ogles: “I think you have to look at this with eyes wide open, see what happened. Human error. Was it some sort of equipment failure? Did DEI play a role in this type of thing?”

How Many Press Secretaries Will Trump Have This Time?

January 30, 2025 at 11:40 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

It took less than two weeks for White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt to become a liability for her boss.

At 27, Leavitt is the youngest person ever to hold the position, but she’s already proving that youth can also mean inexperience.

January 30, 2025 at 11:12 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A group of six Democratic governors pressed Senator Chuck Schumer of New York during a tense call on Wednesday night to be more aggressive in fighting back against President Trump’s nominees and agenda, all but begging the minority leader to persuade Senate Democrats to block whatever they could,” the New York Times reports.

“The call, described in detailed notes as well as interviews with two participants and five other people briefed on the conversation, revealed the growing tensions among Democrats about how forcefully they should oppose Mr. Trump.”

Trump Kicks Congress to the Curb

January 30, 2025 at 11:10 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Congress passed a law shutting down TikTok, and President Trump flouted it. Congress required advance notification for firing inspectors general, and the Trump administration ignored it. Congress approved trillions of dollars in spending on a multitude of federal programs, and Mr. Trump froze it,” the New York Times reports.

“The new administration is quickly demonstrating that it does not intend to be bound by the legal niceties or traditional checks and balances of its relationship with Congress. That has infuriated Democrats but drawn shrugs and approval from Republicans who say Mr. Trump is delivering what he promised even if it comes at the expense of Congress’s authority and constitutional status as a coequal branch of government.”

“Mr. Trump is also clearly embarking on a test of what he can cow a Congress under total Republican control into swallowing. Early indications are that it will be a lot.”

Economy Defied Expectations in Biden’s Last Year

January 30, 2025 at 9:16 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Growth slowed but remained resilient at the end of 2024, leaving the U.S. economy on solid footing heading into a new year — and a new presidential administration — that is full of uncertainty,” the New York Times reports.

“U.S. gross domestic product, adjusted for inflation, grew at a 2.3% annual rate in the fourth quarter of last year, the Commerce Department reported on Thursday. That was down from the 3.1% growth rate in the third quarter but nonetheless represented an encouraging end to a year in which the economy once again defied expectations.”

It’s Chaos Again in Trump’s White House

January 30, 2025 at 9:10 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “That chaotic story that unfolded eight years ago with Trump’s ban on travel from Muslim-majority countries repeated itself in his second term with an abrupt clampdown on federal spending this week that spiraled into a quasi-government shutdown.”

“By the time the White House rescinded the freeze on Wednesday, the scare had briefly disrupted Medicaid payments, senior meals, special education and housing stipends. It also punctured the sense of accomplishment among Trump officials eager to take the levers of power in a more orderly and effective manner than last time.”
