John Warner Endorses Democrats In Virginia

October 31, 2018 at 10:35 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Former Sen. John Warner, who spent 30 years representing Virginia as a Republican, is lending his support to Leslie Cockburn, a Democrat and former investigative journalist vying to represent the 5th District in the U.S. House,” the Fauquirer Times reports.

“Warner endorsed Sen. Tim Kaine, also a Democrat, in his race against GOP nominee Corey Stewart in September.”

Said Warner: “I’m still a Republican. I’m going to tell this gang, I’m still a Republican. You can’t take that away from me. But you’ve got to have the courage to do what’s right for the country and what’s right for your state.”

Has Mueller Already Subpoenaed Trump?

October 31, 2018 at 10:16 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Nelson Cunningham: “As the summer proceeded, we certainly heard a great deal from Rudy Giuliani, the president’s lawyer, about purported negotiations with Mueller’s office about the propriety and scope of Trump’s potential testimony.”

“And then—nothing. Labor Day came and went without a visible move by Mueller to subpoena the president, and we entered the quiet period before the midterms. Even the voluble Giuliani went quiet, more or less. Mindful of the time it would take to fight out the legal issues surrounding a presidential subpoena, and mindful of the ticking clock on Mueller’s now 18-month-old investigation, many of us began to wonder if Mueller had decided to forego the compelling and possibly conclusive nature of presidential testimony in favor of findings built on inference and circumstantial evidence. A move that would leave a huge hole in his final report and findings.”

“But now, thanks to Politico’s reporting (backed up by the simple gumshoe move of sitting in the clerk’s office waiting to see who walks in and requests what file), we may know what Mueller has been up to: Since mid-August, he may have been locked in proceedings with Trump and his lawyers over a grand jury subpoena—in secret litigation that could tell us by December whether the president will testify before Mueller’s grand jury.”

U.S. Troops at the Border Limited In What They Can Do

October 31, 2018 at 9:55 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Stars and Stripes: “The more than 5,200 active-duty troops being sent by President Donald Trump to the U.S.-Mexico border will be limited in what they can do under a federal law that restricts the military from engaging in law enforcement on American soil.”

“That means the troops will not be allowed to detain immigrants, seize drugs from smugglers or have any direct involvement in stopping a migrant caravan that is still about 1,000 miles from the nearest border crossing.”

“Instead, their role will largely mirror that of the existing National Guard troops — about 2,000 in all — deployed to the border over the past six months, including providing helicopter support for border missions, installing concrete barriers and repairing and maintaining vehicles.”

Pence Appears with ‘Rabbi’ Who Says ‘Jesus is the Messiah’

October 31, 2018 at 9:49 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Two days after the deadliest attack on Jews in U.S. history, Vice President Pence bowed his head at a rally in Michigan as a religious leader who casts himself as a “rabbi” offered a prayer for the victims in Pittsburgh,” the Washington Post reports.

“But the man who shared a stage with Pence, Loren Jacobs, preaches Messianic Judaism, a tradition central to Jews for Jesus, a group condemned by Jewish leaders as faux Judaism that seeks to promote Christian evangelism.”

NBC News: “The ‘Messianic rabbi’ who outraged many Jews by invoking the name of Jesus while delivering a prayer in memory of the Pittsburgh synagogue massacre victims was also spurned Tuesday by the organization that ordained him.”

Trump Makes Pittsburgh Visit About Him

October 31, 2018 at 9:41 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump boasted on Twitter about being treated “very nicely” and with “great respect” by the people of Pittsburgh while attempting to dismiss the protests that greeted him yesterday as “fake news.”

He did not mention the 11 people who were killed in the synagogue massacre over the weekend, which was presumably his reason for visiting Pittsburgh.

Dueling Quotes of the Day

October 31, 2018 at 9:29 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“There are constitutional scholars who say the 14th amendment has been misinterpreted and actually the Supreme Court has never gave a solid opinion on this.”

— White House adviser Kellyanne Conway, quoted by CBS News.

“Sometimes the Constitution’s text is plain as day and bars what politicians seek to do. That’s the case with President Trump’s proposal to end ‘birthright citizenship’ through an executive order. Such a move would be unconstitutional and would certainly be challenged. And the challengers would undoubtedly win.”

— George Conway, husband of Kellyanne, writing in the Washington Post with Neil Katyal.

Something Is Happening In the Democrats’ Direction

October 31, 2018 at 8:51 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

First Read: “In the past week or so of the 2018 campaign, something definitely happened — in favor of the Democrats and at the expense of Republicans.”

“We saw it in the weekly Gallup poll, which had President Trump’s approval rating down 4 points to 40 percent; we saw it in our NBC/Marist poll of Arizona, where Democrats are doing as well on the ballot test with likely voters as registered voters, suggesting enthusiasm is on their side; and we saw it in the New York Times Upshot/Siena and Monmouth polls of key House races, which have Democrats ahead or in strong position to upset GOP incumbents.”

“Is this due to movement after the pipe-bomb scare and Pittsburgh? Is this the political environment snapping back to where it was pre-Kavanaugh? Or is it just noise and a false sense of where things truly stand? (After all, it was six days before Election Day 2016 when the polls had Hillary Clinton up 6 points in Wisconsin.)”

Just a Third of Millennials Plan to Vote

October 31, 2018 at 8:37 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new NBC News/GenForward survey of millennials ages 18 to 34 finds that just 31% of them say they will definitely vote in the November midterm elections, a number that has remained steady since August.

“The survey finds that millennials don’t feel represented by Congress, which could be a sign of election disengagement heading into November. A majority of millennials overall (63 percent) do not think that Congress represents the interests of people like them well. About a third (35 percent) think Congress represents people like them well.”

Kamala Harris Has Top Senate Fundraising PAC

October 31, 2018 at 8:12 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) “has given herself an important edge over a potentially crowded 2020 Democratic presidential candidate field: She’s raised more for Democrats running this year than any other senator,” McClatchy reports.

An Epidemic Of Political Dishonesty

October 31, 2018 at 8:10 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Jonathan Cohn: “Distortions in political advertising are part of politics, and neither political party has a monopoly on deception this election cycle. On the fact-checking websites, you’ll find examples of Democrats exaggerating GOP opposition to environmental regulation, for example, or pulling quotes about military service out of context.”

“But if you get the feeling the most frequent and audacious misrepresentations are coming from one side of the political spectrum, you are not crazy.”

“Around the country, it’s Republicans and conservatives making the most patently ridiculous claims ― whether it’s this spot suggesting a commission’s tiny budget could somehow affect state expenditures on roads and schools, or all of those Republicans portraying themselves as champions of protections for people with pre-existing conditions even though they spent last eight years trying to take those protections away.”

“The desperation could be a sign of panic over the polls, which give Democrats a strong chance of winning key statewide races and control of the U.S. House, as well as an outside chance of gaining a majority in the Senate.”

Oprah Will Campaign In Georgia

October 31, 2018 at 7:29 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Oprah Winfrey, the Oscar-nominated, self-made billionaire and media icon, is heading to Georgia to campaign for Stacey Abrams,” BuzzFeed News reports.

“The star will join Abrams, the Democratic candidate for governor, on Thursday. If Abrams wins the race, she will be the first black woman governor in the history of the U.S.”

Anyone Can Still Buy a Political Ad on Facebook

October 31, 2018 at 7:24 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“On the eve of the 2018 midterm elections, a Vice News investigation found the ‘Paid for by’ feature is easily manipulated and appears to allow anyone to lie about who is paying for a political ad, or to pose as someone paying for the ad.To test it, Vice News applied to buy fake ads on behalf of all 100 sitting U.S. senators, including ads ‘Paid for by’ by Mitch McConnell and Chuck Schumer.”

“Facebook’s approvals were bipartisan: All 100 sailed through the system, indicating that just about anyone can buy an ad identified as ‘Paid for by’ by a major U.S. politician.”

Why Lindsey Graham Turned from Detractor to Defender

October 31, 2018 at 7:21 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

CNN: “After streams of voters lined up to take selfies with Graham last week, the detractor-turned-Trump-defender was asked: Is there any room for a Trump critic in today’s Republican Party?

Said Graham: “I don’t think there’s any room in the party for wanting him to fail. If they see your criticism is designed to want him to fail or not support him, then you’re in trouble.”

Graham quickly added: “Most people in that room want me to stay close to the President.”

Wait Until Trump Is Actually on the Ballot

October 31, 2018 at 7:15 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Playbook: “In the last few days, President Trump has said the U.S. is going to build tent cities all over the place to stop migrants. He said he was going to unilaterally change the constitutional principle of birthright citizenship. He said he was going to release a tax bill to further cut income tax rates by 10 percent. Imagine what he’ll say when he, himself, is up for re-election in two years.”

A Split Decision In the Midterms Looks Likely

October 31, 2018 at 7:11 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Mike Allen: “With less than a week until Election Day, top operators in both parties tell me the events of the past week have helped lock in the split decision they have long seen coming: The House flips to Dems (probably decisively), and Republicans hold the Senate (and perhaps gain two seats).”

“Democrats who had grown skittish about taking the House say they’re resting easier.”

“Some top Republicans tell me they worry that their candidates will pay a price following the anti-Semitic murders in Pittsburgh and the arrest of a rabid Trump supporter for the mail bombs.”

Said one GOP official: “World looks crazy and we are in charge of it.”

Reuters: “After two years of wielding no practical political power in Washington, the Democratic Party faces a strong chance of winning control of the U.S. House of Representatives in next week’s election, with Republicans likely to keep the Senate.”

Trump Made It Harder for Republicans In Tight Races

October 31, 2018 at 6:49 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “Republican leaders and candidates in tough races to be decided in next Tuesday’s midterm elections were divided, evasive and otherwise just plain off message yesterday after President Trump spontaneously introduced the notion of ending birthright citizenship.”

“This really isn’t the way Republicans running with — or in some cases, away — from Trump want to be spending the closing days of a campaign on which control of Congress hinges.”

Trump Looks For Anything That Might Stick

October 30, 2018 at 10:14 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “In the last days before a midterm congressional election that will determine the future of his presidency, Mr. Trump seems to be throwing almost anything he can think of against the wall to see what might stick, no matter how untethered from political or legal reality. Frustrated that other topics — like last week’s spate of mail bombs — came to dominate the news, the president has sought to seize back the national stage in the last stretch of the campaign.”

“Ad hoc though they may be, Mr. Trump’s red-meat ideas have come to shape the conversation and, he hopes, may galvanize otherwise complacent conservative voters to turn out on Tuesday. But he risks motivating opponents, as well, and he has put even some of his fellow Republicans on the spot as they are forced to take a position on issues they were not expecting to have to address.”

Trump’s Nationalism Backfires

October 30, 2018 at 10:04 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “Trump’s sharpened tone creates potential complications for some Republican candidates, particularly those in centrist suburban House districts where many GOP voters have grown uneasy about the president, as Trump embarks on a final week of nearly nonstop rallies where immigration is likely to be a frequent topic.”

”There were signs Tuesday that some Trump allies were nervous about sparking a deeper cultural debate in the campaign’s final stretch, particularly with some critics alleging that hostile political rhetoric has played a role in encouraging violence.”
