Red State Dems Have Excuse to Oppose Kavanaugh

September 18, 2018 at 6:32 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The sexual-misconduct allegations against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh may remove pressure that some Democratic senators faced to back his confirmation as a way of reassuring conservative voters in congressional elections just seven weeks away,” Reuters reports.

“Since Kavanaugh was nominated to the high court by President Donald Trump, Democratic senators from states that Trump won in 2016 were locked in a dilemma. If they didn’t vote in favor of Kavanaugh’s confirmation, they would have appeared to be out of step with voters at home and risked losing re-election.”

GOP Voters Don’t Believe Democrats Can Win House

September 18, 2018 at 6:27 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Public Opinion Strategies (R) poll finds most voters believe Democrats will win back the House—just not Republican voters.

“Fully half of self-identified Republicans don’t believe Democrats are likely to win back the House. And within that group, 57% of people who describe themselves as strong Trump supporters don’t believe Democrats have a chance (37%  believe they do).”

Republicans Fear Kavanaugh Backlash In November

September 17, 2018 at 11:05 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Republicans are bracing for political aftershocks from the sexual assault accusation against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, with some expressing fear that the coming investigation will refocus the nation’s attention on an issue that could drive up the Democratic vote in the midterm elections,” the Washington Post reports.

“The initial hope that the conservative Kavanaugh’s appointment would encourage turnout by grateful GOP voters this fall has been tempered by new fears that more voters, especially independent women, might head to the polls with fresh anger about Republican handling of sexual impropriety after a new round of public hearings.”

Giuliani Confident Manafort Won’t Incriminate Trump

September 17, 2018 at 10:17 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump’s lead lawyer said Monday that attorneys for his former campaign chairman Paul Manafort have reiterated that the president has nothing to fear from Manafort’s cooperation with federal investigators,” the Washington Post reports.

“Trump attorney Rudy. Giuliani said that Manafort’s legal team assured him as recently as Saturday — the day after Manafort struck a plea deal with special counsel Robert Mueller — that he has no information that will incriminate the president or his family, including eldest son Donald Trump Jr.”

Trump Lets Kavanaugh Defend Himself

September 17, 2018 at 10:03 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump’s routine reaction to allegations of sexual assault is to deny, retaliate and repeat. He has dismissed accusations against himself as ‘phony’ and ‘false,’ and when presented with claims against other men, the #MeToo-era president tends to side instinctually with the accused,” the Washington Post reports.

“But in the case of federal judge Brett Kavanaugh — whose Supreme Court nomination is suddenly endangered after a woman accused him of sexual assault when they were in high school — Trump on Monday was uncharacteristically muted.”

“White House aides said they persuaded the president to refrain from tweeting a defense of Kavanaugh in the accusation’s immediate aftermath and deliberately worked to keep him from meeting personally with the nominee, even though the two men spent most of the day in proximity.”

Cruz Says O’Rourke Wants to Ban Barbecue

September 17, 2018 at 8:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Searching for a new wedge issue to use against his opponent, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) suggested that Beto O’Rourke (D) wanted to ban barbecue in Texas, the Austin American Statesman reports.

Said Cruz: “When I got here someone told me that even PETA was protesting and giving out barbecued tofu, so I got to say, they summed up the entire election: If Texas elects a Democrat, they’re going to ban barbecue across the state of Texas.”

He added: “You want to talk about an issue to mobilize the people, and I’m talking everybody. So I want to thank PETA and I do want to tell PETA you’re going to have to disclose to the FEC that by coming and protesting and giving away tofu, that you have given an in-kind contribution to my campaign by demonstrating just how bad things can get.”

Trump Hits China with $200 Billion In Tariffs

September 17, 2018 at 6:43 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump, emboldened by America’s economic strength and China’s slowdown, escalated his trade war on Monday, saying the United States would impose tariffs on $200 billion worth of Chinese goods as punishment over Beijing’s trade practices,” the New York Times reports.

“The fresh round of tariffs comes on top of $50 billion worth of Chinese products already taxed earlier this year, meaning nearly half of all Chinese imports into the United States will soon face tariffs.”

Kavanaugh and Accuser Will Testify on Monday

September 17, 2018 at 6:20 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh and Christine Blasey Ford, the woman who accused him of assaulting her in high school, will both testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Monday.

New York Times: “The hearings will set up a potentially explosive public showdown, one that carries unmistakable echoes of the 1991 testimony of Anita Hill, who accused the future Justice Clarence Thomas of sexual harassment in an episode that riveted the nation and ushered a slew of women into public office. They will play out against the backdrop of the #MeToo movement, which has energized Democratic women across the nation.”

Trump Orders Declassification of Russia-Related Material

September 17, 2018 at 6:17 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump “ordered the Justice Department to declassify significant materials from the investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 election, including portions of a secret court order to surveil one of his former campaign advisers and the text messages of several former high-level FBI officials, including former FBI director James B. Comey and deputy director Andrew McCabe,” the Washington Post reports.

NBC News: “Trump is making the extraordinary move in response to calls from his allies in Congress who say they believe the Russia investigation was tainted by anti-Trump bias within the ranks of the FBI and Justice Department.”

An investigation targeting FEMA chief Brock Long has been referred to federal prosecutors to determine whether criminal charges should be pursued, the Wall Street Journal reports.

Collins Says If Kavanaugh Lied It’s ‘Disqualifying’

September 17, 2018 at 5:21 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) “told reporters on Monday that if Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh lied in denying that he sexually assaulted a woman at a high school party in the early 1980s that it would ‘obviously’ disqualify him from a seat on the nation’s highest court,” CNBC reports.

Said Collins: “Obviously if Judge Kavanaugh has lied about what happened that would be disqualifying.”

September 17, 2018 at 5:01 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Special counsel Robert Mueller “is asking a federal judge in Washington, D.C., to move forward with the sentencing of former national security adviser Michael Flynn, nearly 10 months after he pleaded guilty to lying to FBI agents about his Russia contacts,” The Hill reports.

“The latest development indicates that Mueller believes he has gotten all that he can or needs from Flynn in the nearly 10 months since he admitted to lying to FBI investigators about his Russia contacts.”

Trump Says He Won’t Pull Kavanaugh Nomination

September 17, 2018 at 3:29 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump called the notion that Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination for the Supreme Court might be withdrawn over sexual misconduct allegations from his high school days “ridiculous,” Roll Call reports.

“But he backed delaying the confirmation process so the nominee and his accuser could speak with senators.”

Said Trump: “If it takes a little delay, it’ll take a little delay. I’m sure it will work out very well.”

September 17, 2018 at 3:21 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Said DeVos:  “More than a few institutions have been unwilling to provide a forum for their students to discuss serious policy matters that affect our country. I can and have found other forums, but what about students who cannot?”

She added: “We have abandoned truth.”

September 17, 2018 at 3:12 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

House Republicans will investigate reports that FEMA administrator Brock Long “repeatedly misused government vehicles to commute from Washington to North Carolina, where his family resides,” the New York Times reports.

Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-SC), the chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, wrote to Mr. Long “requesting documentation and other information related to his use of government vehicles and about the agency personnel who may have accompanied him on the trips.”

“Mr. Gowdy learned of the potential misuse last week from press reports, but he delayed launching an inquiry as FEMA girded for what was then Hurricane Florence, which was bearing down on the Carolina coast.”
