Christine Blasey Ford Wanted to Flee the Country

September 22, 2018 at 10:43 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“When Donald Trump won his upset presidential victory in 2016, Christine Blasey Ford’s thoughts quickly turned to a name most Americans had never heard of but one that had unsettled her for years: Brett M. Kavanaugh,” the Washington Post reports.

“Kavanaugh — a judge on the prestigious U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia — was among those mentioned as a possible replacement for Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, who died in 2016. When Trump nominated Neil M. Gorsuch, Ford was relieved but still uneasy.”

“Ford had already moved 3,000 miles away from the affluent Maryland suburbs where she says Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her at a house party — a charge he would emphatically deny. Suddenly, living in California didn’t seem far enough. Maybe another hemisphere would be. She went online to research other democracies where her family might settle, including New Zealand.”

Kavanaugh Is Least Liked Nominee Since Robert Bork

September 22, 2018 at 10:26 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Brett Kavanaugh is the least liked Supreme Court nominee since Robert Bork in 1987, CNN reports.

“Kavanaugh’s low ratings will no doubt give fuel to opponents. Interest groups are trying to convince moderate Democrats and Republicans to vote against him. If they can use these polls to persuade senators that it’s electorally harmful to vote for Kavanaugh, it could help their cause.”

Ex-White House Official Revises Statement on Flynn

September 22, 2018 at 10:24 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A former top White House official has revised her statement to investigators about a key event in the probe of Russian interference in the 2016 election, after her initial claim was contradicted by the guilty plea of former national security adviser Michael Flynn,” the Washington Post reports.

“K.T. McFarland, who briefly served as Flynn’s deputy, has now said that he may have been referring to sanctions when they spoke in late December 2016 after Flynn’s calls with Russia’s ambassador to the United States. When FBI agents first visited her at her Long Island home in the summer of 2017, McFarland denied ever talking to Flynn about any discussion of sanctions between him and the ambassador, Sergey Kislyak, in December 2016 during the presidential transition.”

Grassley Sets New Deadline for Kavanaugh Accuser

September 22, 2018 at 8:08 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Charles Grassley (R-IA) said that he “absolutely must hear by 2:30 p.m.” today if Dr. Christine Blasey Ford has agreed to their terms for testifying against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, the New York Times reports.

“It was not clear precisely what those terms were.”

“The late-night missives were the latest twist in a legal tango that has riveted Washington, with a lifetime appointment to the nation’s highest court hanging in the balance.”

O’Rourke Goes on the Attack

September 22, 2018 at 8:01 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D-TX), the Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate, “took a newly aggressive tack against Republican incumbent Ted Cruz in their first debate Friday evening,” the Texas Tribune reports.

“Appearing at Southern Methodist University, the candidates exchanged rhetorical blows on just about every single question, showing off sharp differences that have long been evident in the race. But what stood out was O’Rourke’s combative posture toward Cruz after spending his campaign until this point largely ignoring the incumbent and his attacks.”

“Throughout the debate, O’Rourke repeatedly reminded viewers that he was the only candidate on the stage who has visited all 254 counties in Texas — and forcefully pushed back several times as he came under fire from Cruz.”

FEMA Chief to Reimburse Government

September 22, 2018 at 7:56 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

FEMA Administrator Brock Long “has been forced to reimburse the government for improper personal use of federal government vehicles and acknowledged ‘mistakes’ that he and FEMA made in using those vehicles,” Politico reports.

September 22, 2018 at 12:04 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley agreed late Friday night to allow the woman who has accused Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of sexual assault more time to decide whether to testify before Congress, CNN reports.

Grassley tweeted that he “granted another extension” to Christine Blasey Ford, saying “she should decide so we can move on. I want to hear her.”

HuffPost: “Attack ads are nothing new in the world of politics, but one campaign video targeting an Arizona congressman just hit a new level of ‘whoa.'”

Trump Says Midterms Are Referendum on His Presidency

September 21, 2018 at 11:14 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump cast the midterm elections as a referendum on him and his agenda, arguing on Friday that a vote for any Democrat would empower “dangerous” and “crazy” people and sap the Republican Party’s fragile congressional majorities, the New York Times reports.

Said Trump: “Get out in 2018, because you’re voting for me in 2018. They aren’t just extreme. They are frankly dangerous, and they are crazy.”

Grassley Threatens Kavanaugh Vote on Monday

September 21, 2018 at 7:01 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Charles Grassley (R-IA) told the lawyers for accuser Christine Blasey Ford that the panel “has been extremely accommodating to your client” but will schedule a vote on Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination to the Supreme Court on Monday if they do not respond by 10 p.m. ET, the Washington Post reports.

Grassley said the panel is willing to move Monday’s scheduled hearing to Wednesday, but “we are unwilling to accommodate your unreasonable demands. Outside counsel may not dictate the terms under which committee business will be conducted.”

Carson Blames Kavanaugh Allegations on Socialist Plot

September 21, 2018 at 7:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Ben Carson said that a long-running plot by Socialists to take over America was fueling recent allegations of sexual assault against President Trump’s nominee to the Supreme Court, CNBC reports.

Said Carson: “If you really understand the big picture of what’s going on, then what’s going on with Kavanaugh will make perfectly good sense to you. There’ve been people in this country for a very long time, going all the way back to the Fabians, people who’ve wanted to fundamentally change this country.”

He added: “They don’t like what America is and what it represents, and they want to change us to another system. In order to do that, there are three things they must control: the education system, the media, and the courts. The first two of those they have.”

GOP Candidate Calls Kavanaugh Accusation ‘Absurd’

September 21, 2018 at 6:40 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

North Dakota U.S. Senate candidate Kevin Cramer (R) said that the accusation against Supreme Court pick Brett Kavanaugh was “even more absurd” than Anita Hill’s accusation against Clarence Thomas because Kavanaugh and his accuser were drunk teenagers when the alleged incident occurred, CNN reports.

Said Cramer: “These are teenagers who evidently were drunk, according to her own statement. They were drunk. Nothing evidently happened in it all, even by her own accusation. Again, it was supposedly an attempt or something that never went anywhere.”

Christine Blasey Ford alleged that Kavanaugh was “stumbling drunk,” but only said she had one beer at the party.

Right Descends Into Madness with Doppelganger Theory

September 21, 2018 at 5:31 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Max Boot: “That Kavanaugh is the victim of mistaken identity was the implausible theory put forward by Ed Whelan, president of the Ethics and Public Policy Center in Washington. On Thursday night he posted (and now has deleted) a long series of tweets, complete with links to Zillow and Google Maps, arguing that Ford had indeed been assaulted — but by a friend of Kavanaugh’s who looked a lot like him. And then he proceeded to name the friend and post his picture. In the long annals of American politics, a lot of people have done a lot of irresponsible things, but for sheer callousness and craziness it’s hard to top an accusation of sexual assault against a specific individual based on, essentially, nothing. This is McCarthyism redux — and if Kavanaugh is revealed to have any connection to the propagation of this loathsome falsehood, he should be voted down overwhelmingly by the Senate.”

“It tells you how far the right has descended into madness that this vile accusation did not come from an anonymous blogger on some online bulletin board or from professional conspiracy theorist Alex Jones. It came from someone with sterling establishment credentials.”

Politico: Public relations firm helped Whelan stoke half-baked Kavanaugh alibi.

Minnesota GOP Lawmaker Abruptly Ends Campaign

September 21, 2018 at 5:25 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Minnesota state Rep. Jim Knoblach (R) abruptly ended his re-election campaign Friday as MPR News prepared to publish “detailed accusations from his adult daughter of what she described as his inappropriate behavior toward her since childhood.”

“Knoblach’s daughter, Laura, alleges that the prominent legislator inappropriately touched her for most of her life, with her first memories starting when she was 9 years old.”

GOP House Campaign Arm Cancels Ads in Pittsburgh

September 21, 2018 at 4:56 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The National Republican Congressional Committee’s independent expenditure unit is cancelling its remaining ad reservation in the Pittsburgh media market through Election Day – a potentially grim sign for Rep. Keith Rothfus (R-PA),” The Hill reports.

“The move comes weeks after the NRCC pulled the plug on reservations in the area for Sept. 12-Oct. 8 and could signal that the committee may be losing confidence in whether Rothfus can defeat Rep. Conor Lamb (D-PA) in November.”

Another Roger Stone Associate Meets with Mueller

September 21, 2018 at 4:53 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Jerome Corsi, an associate of political operative Roger Stone, met Friday with a federal grand jury convened to hear testimony in special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe into Russian meddling, appearing at the U.S. District Court House in Washington, D.C., ABC News reports.

Why Brett Kavanaugh Should Step Aside

September 21, 2018 at 4:10 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Benjamin Wittes: “I have known Brett Kavanaugh for a long time—in many different contexts. I am fond of him personally. I think the world of him intellectually. I don’t believe he lied in his Senate testimony. I don’t believe he’s itching to get on the Supreme Court to protect Donald Trump from Robert Mueller. I’m much less afraid of conservative judges than are many of my liberal friends. As recently as a few days ago, I was cheerfully vouching for Kavanaugh’s character.”

“That said, the allegation against him is, at least so far as one can tell from the press reports, credible, and it deserves to be taken seriously.”

“If Kavanaugh were to ask my advice today—and to be clear, he hasn’t done so—I would tell him he almost certainly should have his nomination withdrawn. The circumstances in which he should fight this out are, in my view, extremely limited.”
