Trump Hits Red State Democrats

May 30, 2018 at 7:02 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump “is planning to focus his midterm campaigning this summer on red states with competitive Senate races where he has a deep reservoir of support and can bring a message devised to stoke partisan outrage,” the New York Times reports.

“The strategy is intended to take advantage of his star power among core Republican supporters while minimizing his exposure in states with competitive congressional races where his polarizing presence could help motivate Democrats as well as independents and moderate Republicans.”

The One Democratic Lawmaker Trump Likes

May 30, 2018 at 7:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“When a small group of alarmed White House aides caught wind that Sen. Heidi Heitkamp — one of the most endangered Democrats up for reelection in 2018 — would be attending President Trump’s bill signing last week, they raced to stop it,” Politico reports.

“As the election year kicks into high gear, Republicans have grown increasingly frustrated with Trump’s ongoing flirtation with the freshman senator. At a time when many in the GOP fear that the president’s unpredictable style will undercut their best-laid midterm plans, the relationship has given Heitkamp — who is seeking reelection in a state where Trump won nearly two-thirds of the vote — fodder to portray herself as a presidential ally.”

Senior GOP Lawmaker Says FBI Acted Properly

May 29, 2018 at 10:30 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-SC), who was part of a highly classified Justice Department briefing last week, said that the FBI “acted properly when it deployed an informant to gather information from advisers to President Trump’s campaign in 2016,” Politico reports.

Said Gowdy: “I am even more convinced that the FBI did exactly what my fellow citizens would want them to do when they got the information they got.”

He added that the information also suggested that the effort had “nothing to do with Donald Trump.”

Trump Bragged About Classified Skirmish at Fundraiser

May 29, 2018 at 10:26 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The White House has tried to avoid discussing a February skirmish between U.S. troops and Russian mercenaries in Syria, but that didn’t stop President Trump from bragging about the Pentagon’s performance at a recent closed-door fundraiser,” Politico reports.

“The details of the battle remain classified, but speaking to donors in midtown Manhattan last Wednesday, Trump said he was amazed by the performance of American F-18 pilots. He suggested that the strikes may have been as brief as “10 minutes” and taken out 100 to 300 Russians.”

Mueller Investigating Trump’s Demand of Sessions

May 29, 2018 at 7:53 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “The confrontation, which has not been previously reported, is being investigated by the special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III, as are the president’s public and private attacks on Mr. Sessions and efforts to get him to resign. Mr. Trump dwelled on the recusal for months, according to confidants and current and former administration officials who described his behavior toward the attorney general.”

“The special counsel’s interest demonstrates Mr. Sessions’s overlooked role as a key witness in the investigation into whether Mr. Trump tried to obstruct the inquiry itself. It also suggests that the obstruction investigation is broader than it is widely understood to be — encompassing not only the president’s interactions with and firing of the former F.B.I. director, James B. Comey, but also his relationship with Mr. Sessions.”

Chafee Won’t Run for Senate

May 29, 2018 at 7:45 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Former Sen. Lincoln Chafee (D-RI) will not challenge Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) in a primary, the Providence Journal reports.

Said Chafee: “The appetite amongst Democrats to debate what went wrong in 2016 wasn’t there to the extent that I would have liked.”

“Chafee said he felt the national Democratic Party was unfair to Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), putting its institutional thumb on the scale in favor of Hillary Clinton, who then went on to lose to Trump. But Democrats, Chafee said, would rather look forward, rather than back at 2016.”

CIA Says North Korea Won’t Denuclearize

May 29, 2018 at 6:16 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A new U.S. intelligence assessment has concluded that North Korea does not intend to give up its nuclear weapons any time soon, three U.S. officials told NBC News — a finding that conflicts with recent statements by President Trump that Pyongyang intends to do so in the future.”

“President Trump is continuing to pursue a nuclear summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un even though the CIA analysis, which is consistent with other expert opinion, casts doubt on the viability of Trump’s stated goal for the negotiations, the elimination of North Korea’s nuclear weapons stockpile.”

“In an odd twist, a list of potential concessions by North Korea in the CIA analysis included the possibility that Kim Jong Un may consider offering to open a Western hamburger franchise in Pyongyang as a show of goodwill.”

Greitens Announces His Resignation

May 29, 2018 at 5:21 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Scandal-plagued Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens (R) announced that he will resign from office after being subpoenaed to testify before an impeachment committee over allegations including sexual misconduct and misuse of charity donor lists for his political campaign.

His resignation will be effective on June 1 at 5 p.m.

St. Louis Post-Dispatch: “Word of the announcement came after damaging testimony by a former campaign aide and a ruling by a judge forcing Greitens’ team to reveal fundraising information.”

GOP Lawmaker Blames Porn for School Shootings

May 29, 2018 at 4:49 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Diane Black (R-TN) said that pornography is a “big part” of what is driving the spike in school shootings, the HuffPost reports.

Said Black: “It’s available on the shelf when you walk in the grocery store. Yeah, you have to reach up to get it, but there’s pornography there. All of this is available without parental guidance. I think that is a big part of the root cause.”

She didn’t clarify what it is about porn that she thinks is leading to school massacres.

ABC Cancels ‘Roseanne’ After Racist Rant

May 29, 2018 at 1:59 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

ABC canceled its hit sitcom “Roseanne” on Tuesday after the show’s biggest star, Roseanne Barr, went on a racist Twitter rant, CNN reports.

Barr had posted a comment about former Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett that said if “muslim brotherhood & planet of the apes had a baby=vj.”

According to Variety, series co-star Sara Gilbert condemned Barr’s comments: “Roseanne’s recent comments about Valerie Jarrett, and so much more, are abhorrent and do not reflect the beliefs of our cast and crew or anyone associated with our show. I am disappointed in her actions to say the least. This is incredibly sad and difficult for all of us.”

Study Links Intolerance with Support for Authoritarianism

May 29, 2018 at 1:25 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new study finds a correlation “between white American’s intolerance, and support for authoritarian rule. In other words, when intolerant white people fear democracy may benefit marginalized people, they abandon their commitment to democracy,” NBC News reports.

“The World Values Survey data used is from the period 1995 to 2011 — well before Donald Trump’s 2016 run for president. It suggests, though, that Trump’s bigotry and his authoritarianism are not separate problems, but are intertwined. When Trump calls Mexicans “rapists,” and when he praises authoritarian leaders, he is appealing to the same voters.”

Trump’s Survival Plan Is Blame Obama

May 29, 2018 at 1:11 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Daily Beast: “Broadsides against his predecessor are nothing new for Trump. Nor are the false and misleading suggestions that President Obama snooped on him during his campaign. In early 2017, Trump very publicly, and erroneously, accused Obama of wiretapping him in 2016.”

“What stood out about the weekend’s salvo was the vitriol, perhaps panic, behind it and the frostiness it underscored about the relationship between the two most recent Oval Office occupants.”

“According to two White House officials, Trump has been privately wondering whether Obama is actively working behind the scenes to undermine or undercut his presidency. And he’s done so without bothering to pick up the phone to ask or confront his predecessor. Obama and Trump have not spoken since the inauguration.”

How Trump Uses the Russia Probe to His Benefit

May 29, 2018 at 12:31 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The following post for members is by Leonard Steinhorn, Professor of Communication at American University and a CBS Radio News Political Analyst.

From the beginning of the Russia probe we’ve assumed that President Trump has viewed the investigation as an existential threat to the legitimacy of his election and his presidency overall. And because of that – in true Roy Cohn fashion – he has tried to undermine the investigators, pressure law enforcement, discredit the evidence, and frame the entire episode as a “witch hunt” against his presidency. The President counterpunches, the narrative tells us, to prevent an epic political downfall.

Both Parties Gaming California’s Top Two Primaries

May 29, 2018 at 12:08 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

First Read: “On the GOP side, President Trump has endorsed Republican John Cox for governor, trying to unite California Republicans around a single candidate, which could help drive turnout in the House and downballot races… In addition, House Republicans have opened an office in Southern California to spur GOP turnout in the three key House districts.”

“On the Democratic side, the DCCC has been airing TV ads both in favor of their preferred candidates in these crowded primaries (see here and here) and against Republican candidates (see here and here). And while House Democrats want two Democrats at the top of the ticket for governor – to drive Dem turnout and depress the GOP’s – gubernatorial frontrunner Gavin Newsom prefers a Republican opponent, since someone like fellow Democrat Antonio Villaraigosa represents a greater general-election threat than either of the two leading GOP candidates (Cox and Travis Allen).”

“What’s fascinating about all of these races is that they’re essentially margin-of-error contests to make the Top 2, where candidates in positions No. 2, No. 3 and even No. 4 are separated by just a handful of points in the public and private polling. All of which makes the June 5 primaries – and the strategies going into them – quite a game.”

“At least 4,645 people died as a result of Hurricane Maria and its devastation across Puerto Rico last year, according to a new Harvard study released Tuesday, an estimate that far exceeds the official government death toll, which stands at 64,” the Washington Post reports.
