“The job hunt included Pruitt’s approaching wealthy party supporters and conservative figures with ties to the Trump administration. The individuals said he enlisted Samantha Dravis, then serving as associate administrator for the EPA’s Office of Policy, to line up work for his wife.”

Capitol Hill Republicans Lose Patience with Mueller

June 13, 2018 at 7:21 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “A growing number of Republicans in senior leadership positions, who all profess that Mueller should have no artificial deadline for his Russia influence probe, have also begun to sprinkle in another suggestion: It’s time to wrap it up.”

Mueller’s Public Image at All-Time Low

June 13, 2018 at 7:18 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Politico/Morning Consult poll finds that “months of sustained conservative attacks led by President Trump and his allies has harmed Mueller most among Republicans, with a record 53% now saying they view the lead Russia investigator in an unfavorable light. That’s a 26-point spike since July, when the poll first started asking voters whether they viewed Mueller favorably or unfavorably.”

“Mueller’s unfavorable numbers have hit highs among both Democrats and independents, at 24% and 33%, respectively. Thirty-six percent of all registered voters are also seeing Mueller unfavorably, which represents the highest level since the polling first raised the topic 11 months ago. Back then, 23% of all voters said they viewed Mueller negatively.”

Taking on Trump Was Too Much for Mark Sanford

June 13, 2018 at 7:12 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “In the end, it wasn’t the Appalachian Trail that brought down Mark Sanford. It was President Trump. The South Carolina congressman’s stunning defeat in Tuesday’s Republican primary effectively ended the turbulent two-decade career of a political icon who once harbored presidential aspirations.”

“His defeat is bound to raise fears among Republicans about the political perils of crossing a president who remains deeply popular with GOP voters. In recent days, Sanford himself had expressed concern that a loss in the primary would discourage what dwindling GOP dissent among against the White House remains.”

Trump Retreats from U.S. Moral Leadership

June 13, 2018 at 7:04 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Associated Press: “Though Trump is far from the first U.S. president to work with an unsavory counterpart to achieve a strategic goal, his decision to broadcast that he tacitly accepts Kim’s history of atrocities was a sharp break from the position of presidents from both parties to set America as the exemplar shining city on a hill for other nations to emulate.”

Corey Stewart (R) won the Republican nomination to face Sen. Tim Kaine (D-VA) in November after fighting off two challengers, the Washington Post reports.

“Stewart, who nearly won the GOP nomination for Virginia governor last year, has gained notoriety for his embrace of the Confederate flag, hard line against illegal immigrants and past association with men who consider themselves white nationalists.”

“He has promised a ‘vicious’ campaign against Kaine, who is popular in the state and is seeking a second term.”

“The defeat, which carries national implications, marks the first time Sanford has lost an election, which began with his first congressional bid in this very district in 1994.”

The House is set to vote next week on two competing immigration bills after Republican negotiations on a compromise fall short, the Washington Post reports.

The word came shortly after rebellious moderates appeared to come up two votes short in their effort to force votes on immigration in defiance of leadership.

One bill is a conservative plan. The other is a measure, yet to be finalized, that conservatives and moderates have been discussing for weeks.

“Rosenstein has butted heads with House Intelligence Chairman Devin Nunes for months over a subpoena for documents related to the Russia investigation, but the battle spilled out into public view Tuesday after Fox News reported staff on the committee felt ‘personally attacked’ at a meeting with Rosenstein in January.”

June 12, 2018 at 5:36 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Bob Corker (R-TN) accused his party of cowering before President Trump in an impassioned speech on the Senate floor, CNN reports.

“In an animated exchange, Corker — who was trying to get a vote on an amendment as part of an ongoing debate over the Senate’s defense bill — argued that Republicans were blocking his trade proposal because they were afraid of Trump and what he might do to the party if they upset him in an election year.”

Said Corker: “We might poke the bear! My gosh, if the President gets upset with us we might not be in the majority.”

He added: “The United States Senate right now on June 12 is becoming a body where, well, we’ll do what we can do, but my gosh, if the President gets upset with us, then we might not be in the majority. And so let’s don’t do anything that might upset the President.”
