Trump Shakes Hands with Kim at Start of Summit

June 11, 2018 at 9:07 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump and Kim Jong-un of North Korea “arrived at the site of their first face-to-face meeting Tuesday, a momentous step in an improbable courtship that has opened a new chapter for the world’s largest nuclear power and the most reclusive one,” the New York Times reports.

“Brash, impulsive leaders who only a few months ago taunted each other across a nuclear abyss, Mr. Trump and Mr. Kim had set aside their threats in a gamble that for now, at least, personal diplomacy can overcome decades of distrust.”

President Trump said that White House chief economic adviser Larry Kudlow suffered a heart attack because he “has been working so hard on trade and the economy.”

Judge Questions Defense of Trump’s Hotel Profits

June 11, 2018 at 8:32 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A federal judge on Monday sharply criticized the Justice Department’s argument that President Trump’s financial interest in his company’s hotel in downtown Washington is constitutional, a fresh sign that the judge may soon rule against the president in a historic case that could head to the Supreme Court,” the New York Times reports.

“The plaintiffs in the lawsuit, the District of Columbia and the state of Maryland, charge that Mr. Trump’s profits from the hotel violate anti-corruption clauses of the Constitution that restrict government-bestowed financial benefits, or emoluments, to presidents beyond their official salary.”

The BBC caught scam call center workers on hidden cameras as they laughed at the people they were tricking. One worker bragged about making $250k from victims. The disturbing truth? Scammers don’t pick phone numbers at random. They buy your data from brokers.

Once your data is out there, it’s not just calls. It’s phishing, impersonation, and identity theft. Trump’s Crucial Minute Draws Near

June 11, 2018 at 8:15 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Dave Lawler: “President Trump has said he’ll know within one minute whether North Korean leader Kim Jong-un is serious about denuclearization. That first minute is rapidly approaching.”

Jared and Ivanka Made At Least $82 Million Last Year

June 11, 2018 at 7:32 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner, the president’s daughter and son-in-law, brought in at least $82 million in outside income while they served as senior White House advisers last year,” the Washington Post reports.

“The filings show how the couple is collecting immense sums from other enterprises while serving in the White House, an extraordinary income flow that ethics experts have warned could create potential conflicts of interests.”

GOP Candidate Seethes as Trump Embraces Democrat

June 11, 2018 at 7:28 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump “is aggressively campaigning for Republican Senate candidates around the country and belittling their Democratic rivals, with one notable exception — North Dakota Sen. Heidi Heitkamp (D-ND),” the Washington Post reports.

“Trump’s affinity for Heitkamp, who got a shout-out and a handshake at a recent White House bill signing, has frustrated top Republicans who see winning her Democratic seat as crucial to holding onto their fragile 51-to-49 majority. No one has felt it more acutely than GOP Rep. Kevin Cramer, whom Trump personally recruited to run against Heitkamp.”

“Upset, Cramer contacted White House Chief of Staff John F. Kelly to appeal for political help and traded warning shots with Trump’s legislative affairs director, Marc Short.”

Any Disloyalty to Trump Can Imperil a GOP Incumbent

June 11, 2018 at 7:20 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Heading into the midterm elections, President Trump has become a one-man litmus test in some of his party’s primaries, imperiling incumbents in races where policy issues seem to matter less to voters than personal loyalty to the president,” the New York Times reports.

“Perhaps nowhere has this been seen more acutely than in Alabama’s Second Congressional District, where Republican voters face a peculiar choice in a runoff: A congresswoman who condemned Mr. Trump but has since voted nearly in lock step with him, or a challenger who was once a Democrat who supported Nancy Pelosi, but now sounds much like the president.”

Democrats Turn to Hollywood for Messaging Help

June 11, 2018 at 6:17 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The DNC and members of Congress “are turning to Hollywood for help with voter turnout and messaging ahead of the midterm elections and 2020 presidential campaign, quietly consulting with a group of actors, writers and producers here,” Politico reports.

“DNC Chairman Tom Perez, several House members and other top elected officials have already met with the group, formed by members of the entertainment industry in the wake of the 2016 election, that participants liken to a TV writers’ room, complete with producers of such programs as Veep.”

Said writer and producer Alex Gregory: “It really is focused on what do we stand for? In some ways, how did we lose? It is a moment of soul searching right now in that, we lost to an insane person and that was more appealing that what we had to offer.”

British Donor Met with Russians Before Brexit Vote

June 11, 2018 at 5:19 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Arron Banks, the millionaire businessman who bankrolled Nigel Farage’s campaign to quit the European Union, had multiple meetings with Russian embassy officials in the run-up to the Brexit referendum,” the Observer reports.

“Banks, who gave £12m of services to the campaign, becoming the biggest donor in UK history, has repeatedly denied any involvement with Russian officials, or that Russian money played any part in the Brexit campaign.”

Sessions Says Domestic Violence Not Grounds for Asylum

June 11, 2018 at 4:22 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Attorney General Jeff Sessions said that “fear of domestic violence is not legal grounds for asylum in a closely watched immigration case that could have a broad effect on the asylum process, women who have endured extreme violence and the independence of immigration judges,” the New York Times reports.

“Mr. Sessions reversed a decision by a Justice Department immigration appeals court that had given asylum to a woman from El Salvador who had been raped and abused by her husband. The appeals court decision had overruled earlier orders in similar cases.”

Russians Met with NRA During 2016 Campaign

June 11, 2018 at 3:28 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Several prominent Russians, some in President Vladimir Putin’s inner circle or high in the Russian Orthodox Church, now have been identified as having contact with National Rifle Association officials during the 2016 U.S. election campaign,” McClatchy reports.

“The contacts have emerged amid a deepening Justice Department investigation into whether Russian banker and lifetime NRA member Alexander Torshin illegally channeled money through the gun rights group to add financial firepower to Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential bid.”

The Supreme Court Handed the GOP a Powerful Weapon

June 11, 2018 at 2:49 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

This piece is only available to Political Wire members.

Republicans have claimed for years that an epidemic of massive voter fraud was justification for voter ID laws. They’ve argued that more aggressive policing of voter rolls was necessary since undocumented immigrants — and even dead people — can end up casting votes.

GOP Holds Edge In Ohio Special Election

June 11, 2018 at 1:10 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Monmouth poll in Ohio’s 12th congressional district finds Troy Balderson (R) appears to have an advantage over Danny O’Connor (D) in the August 7th special House election, 43% to 33%.

The race does not look much different using two likely voter models. A historical midterm-like turnout model gives Balderson a 48% to 39% lead, while a model that includes a turnout surge in Democratic areas narrows that edge slightly to 46% to 39%.

Quote of the Day

June 11, 2018 at 12:56 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Mike, you got it? No fucking crazy talk from anybody in the administration.”

— President Trump, quoted by the Wall Street Journal, instructing Vice President Mike Pence to tone down his comments ahead of the meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

Kasich Has a Lot of Opinions

June 11, 2018 at 12:51 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Ohio Gov. John Kasich (R) “has authored five guest columns for news organizations in the last 11 days. Each one critiques Republicans in Washington — mostly Trump, but also Congress — on policy grounds, with Kasich advancing his own ideas.”

“Kasich advisers told BuzzFeed News that the op-ed binge is evidence that he is viewed as a thought leader representing an alternative point of view in the Trump era. But it’s also the latest sign of spadework in what could be Kasich’s third presidential campaign. Kasich has kept his political organization active, met with national security and foreign policy experts to stay fresh on global affairs, and spent considerable time in New Hampshire, the first primary state.”

Defining the Trump Doctrine

June 11, 2018 at 11:37 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Jeffrey Goldberg: “The best distillation of the Trump Doctrine I heard, though, came from a senior White House official with direct access to the president and his thinking. I was talking to this person several weeks ago, and I said, by way of introduction, that I thought it might perhaps be too early to discern a definitive Trump Doctrine.”

Said the official: “No, there’s definitely a Trump Doctrine. The Trump Doctrine is ‘We’re America, Bitch.’ That’s the Trump Doctrine.”

Supreme Court Upholds Ohio’s Purge of Voting Rolls

June 11, 2018 at 10:43 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Supreme Court on Monday upheld Ohio’s aggressive efforts to purge its voting rolls,” the New York Times reports.

“The court ruled that a state may kick people off the rolls if they skip a few elections and fail to respond to a notice from state election officials. The vote was 5 to 4, with the more conservative justices in the majority.”

“Ohio is more aggressive than any other state in purging its voter rolls. After skipping a single federal election cycle, voters are sent a notice. If they fail to respond and do not vote in the next four years, their names are purged from the rolls.”

Rick Hasen: “No doubt other Republican states will follow suit and adopt Ohio’s procedures, leading to the removal of a disproportionate number of minority, low-income, and veteran voters from the list of eligible voters. It is an unfortunate decision, but Justice Sonia Sotomayor’s lone dissent provides two paths forward to mount new attacks on these voter suppressive laws based on their discriminatory impact.”
