Where Did the Wave Go?

February 2, 2018 at 11:02 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Nate Cohn: “The Democratic advantage on the generic congressional ballot, which asks people whether they’ll vote for Democrats or Republicans for Congress, has dwindled since the heart of the tax debate in December. Then, nearly all surveys put Republicans behind by double digits. Now, poll averages put the Democratic lead at only around six or seven percentage points.”

“The question isn’t really whether Republican standing has improved recently. It has. The question is whether anyone should care: Is it just one of many blips and bumps along the road, or does it say something meaningful about the midterm elections?”

“The short answer: Check back in a month. The shift hasn’t lasted long enough to merit a reassessment of the national political environment. But there are reasons to think it could.”

Did Trump Even Read the Nunes Memo?

February 2, 2018 at 10:33 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Jonathan Chait: “The Washington Post comes closest to addressing the mystery, yet fails to resolve the matter. The Post reports that the president ‘tuned in to cable television segments about the memo. He talked to friends and advisers about it.’ He thereby ‘became absolutely convinced’ it must be published. After becoming convinced, Trump ‘was then left alone to read the memo in its entirety.’ And then Chief of Staff John Kelly ‘returned a few hours later and shared with the president his opinion.'”

“‘A few hours’ is obviously ample time to read a three-and-a-half-page memo. But the Post does not say that Trump read it, or even that he claimed to have read it. All we know is that he was left alone with a copy.”

Russian Intelligence Chiefs Travel to Washington

February 2, 2018 at 10:24 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Radio Free Europe: “The directors of Russia’s three main intelligence and espionage agencies all traveled to the U.S. capital in recent days, in what observers said was a highly unusual occurrence coming at a time of heightened U.S.-Russian tensions.”

This piece is only available to Political Wire members.

President Trump is expected to up the ante in a high-stakes battle over the Russia investigation by approving publication of a GOP memo that says the FBI abused its surveillance powers. Republican lawmakers claim the memo, which could be released to the public today, also describes anti-Trump bias at the FBI.

Probe Lawyers Think Mueller Could Indict Trump

February 2, 2018 at 9:28 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation has gathered enough steam that some lawyers representing key Donald Trump associates are considering the possibility of a historic first: an indictment against a sitting president,” Politico reports.

“Neither attorney claimed to have specific knowledge of Mueller’s plans. Both based their opinions on their understanding of the law; one also cited his interactions with the special counsel’s team, whose interviews have recently examined whether Trump tried to derail the probe into his campaign’s Russia ties.”

Said one lawyer: “If I were a betting man, I’d bet against the president.”

“The Arizona House of Representatives voted to immediately expel Rep. Don Shooter (R) from office for ‘dishonorable’ behavior after an investigation found he sexually harassed women over many years,” the Arizona Republic reports.

February 2, 2018 at 8:44 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR) “is seeking documents from the National Rifle Association and the Treasury Department following reports of an FBI investigation into whether a Russian central banker funneled money to the group during the 2016 presidential campaign,” the AP reports.

Said Wyden: “I am specifically troubled by the possibility that Russian-backed shell companies or intermediaries may have circumvented laws designed to prohibit foreign meddling in our elections.”

Senate Takes Rare Step In Confirming Judicial Nominee

February 2, 2018 at 8:27 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“For the first time in nearly 30 years, the Senate has confirmed a judicial nominee without a seal of approval from a home state senator,” the AP reports.

“The 56-42 vote Tuesday to confirm David Stras of Minnesota demonstrates anew Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s resolve in getting President Trump’s judicial nominees confirmed.”

Trump Says FBI Has ‘Politicized’ Investigative Process

February 2, 2018 at 7:56 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump said that the top officials and investigators at the F.B.I. and the Justice Department had “politicized the sacred investigative process,” hours before the White House is expected to clear the way for Congress to release a controversial memo, the New York Times reports.

“The early-morning Twitter post reinforced reports that Mr. Trump, in allowing the memo to be released, is seeking to clean house in the upper ranks of the law enforcement agencies, even at the risk of losing his own F.B.I. director, Christopher Wray.”

Trump Rips Into Kasich

February 2, 2018 at 7:54 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump tore into Ohio Gov. John Kasich (R), a GOP rival and potential 2020 primary challenger, at a RNC dinner last night, Politico reports.

“The president went after the Ohio governor several times by name, according to three people who were present. The president mocked Kasich, who is being termed-out of office and fell short in the 2016 GOP primary, and described him as one of his loudest and most relentless critics.”

Grimm Gets Sweet Deal to Pay Off Debt

February 2, 2018 at 7:21 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Disgraced ex-Congressman Michael Grimm (R-NY), who’s running for his old job carrying President Trump’s ‘drain the swamp’ torch, got a pretty sweet deal from one of the swamp’s biggest lobbying firms,” the New York Daily News reports.

Instead of paying the $421,788, in a “confidential settlement” Grimm paid just $25,000. “That means Grimm, if elected, would go to Congress with a six-figure debt forgiven by one of the most entrenched lobbying firms in Washington, D.C.”

When reporter Greg Smith pressed for more details, spokesman Michael Caputo emailed: “Please print out my statement, roll it into a little ball, and shove it up your tight liberal ass Greg. Reporters like you are why Donald Trump won.”

Trump Boasted About His Physical Exam to Lawmakers

February 2, 2018 at 7:12 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

After the press was escorted out of the conference room, Breitbart News obtained an audio recording of the rest of President Trump’s speech to Republican members of Congress “as he delighted the crowd by discussing the details of his cognitive exam at Walter Reed Military Hospital. He boasted that he got a ‘30-for-30’ score… He said that in the beginning of the test, he had to identify sketches of animals, which was pretty easy.”

“Later in the test, he explained, he had to repeat disassociated words as the test administrators asked him to repeat them at different points in the test: ‘Let me tell you, those last ten questions are hard,’ he said, and added. ‘There aren’t a lot of people that can do that.'”

“Trump said he was up to nine minutes on the treadmill for his physical, even though he was only asked to do five before the doctor asked him if he wanted to keep going. ‘I said, “What do I have to prove?”’ he said. ‘I’m telling you, I could have gone much longer.’”

Most Top Jobs at State Department Are Vacant

February 2, 2018 at 7:11 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Bloomberg: “With Tom Shannon’s departure, seven of the top nine jobs at the department will be empty. Those vacant posts include positions overseeing the agency’s role in U.S. trade policy, stopping the spread of nuclear weapons, refugee issues and efforts to counter human trafficking.”

Quote of the Day

February 2, 2018 at 7:05 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“All should appreciate the FBI speaking up. I wish more of our leaders would. But take heart: American history shows that, in the long run, weasels and liars never hold the field, so long as good people stand up. Not a lot of schools or streets named for Joe McCarthy.”

— Former FBI Director James Comey, on Twitter.

FBI Memo Firestorm Engulfs GOP Retreat

February 2, 2018 at 7:03 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “Republican lawmakers often complain when President Trump’s controversial comments suck up the headlines and undercut their messaging. But this week, they tripped over their own feet. The firestorm over whether to release a classified, GOP-crafted memo alleging FBI misconduct has totally drowned out the House-Senate GOP retreat here in West Virginia. Republicans wanted to tout their tax bill and advocate for their 2018 priorities, from infrastructure to military spending.”

“But the controversial document of their own making seemed to be the only thing reporters wanted to talk about. The rank and file and leadership alike were peppered with questions about the memo drafted by aides to House Intelligence Chairman Devin Nunes.”

February 1, 2018 at 9:41 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has asked Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant (R) to consider appointing himself to the Senate if ailing Sen. Thad Cochran (R-MS) resigns from office, the Washington Post reports.

“President Trump, a supporter of Bryant, backs the plan, according to a person familiar with the situation, though there are several other options that both McConnell and Trump have discussed if Bryant declines.”
