Fox News Spied on Media Reporters

August 9, 2016 at 12:07 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

CNN media reporter Brian Stelter said that Fox News once had a woman spy on him:

About ten years ago I had a crush on a woman at Fox News. She was a low level staffer. I was in college at the time. So I was going out on what I thought were dates. Chris, I thought these were dates. These were not dates. She was actually reporting back to Fox News about me. She was reporting back about what I thought of her and about CNN and MSNBC and Fox. Because I was a reporter on the beat, they were actually spying on me that way. Now I didn’t think that was a big deal at the time. I thought it was the way Fox operates. Fox is a political organization. But now we know they were actually sending out private investigators. They were tailing other reporters.

40 Years of Sexism

This is a rather remarkable mash up of questions asked of Hillary Clinton over the years.

McConnell’s Supreme Court Dilemma

August 9, 2016 at 11:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

First Read: “With yet another poll showing Hillary Clinton ahead of Donald Trump by double digits — this time from NBC|SurveyMonkey — Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has an important choice to make. Does he continue to block President Obama’s pick to fill the Supreme Court vacancy, Merrick Garland, and risk the possibility that a President Hillary Clinton could nominate someone much more liberal (and younger) instead? Or does he relent on the Garland blockade, realizing that it might be the best outcome for Senate Republicans — simply to turn the conversation away from Trump?”

“And it’s worth pointing out that Clinton running mate Tim Kaine didn’t 100% close the door on the possibility that Clinton might make her own Supreme Court pick if Republicans continue to block Garland.”

Trump Still Hasn’t Spent Any Money on Ads

August 9, 2016 at 10:45 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Nearly $100 million has been spent on general-election TV advertisements in the presidential race since the primary season ended, but Donald Trump’s campaign still hasn’t spent a single cent on one of them,” NBC News reports.

Brown Said He Had Sex in His Senate Office

August 9, 2016 at 10:17 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Former Sen. Scott Brown (R-MA) was recently playing a version of The Newlywed Game during a cruise when he was asked to guess his wife’s answer to the most unusual place they have ever “made whoopee,” according to the Boston Globe.

“His first answer? On a golf course…. Then he guessed an airplane, to which his wife responded that everyone’s done it on an airplane — that’s not unusual. The passenger said Brown’s final answer — his US Senate office — really got the crowd going, especially when Brown turned to the audience and quipped, ‘That’s right, and you all paid for it!'”

Brown later claimed he was just joking.

Who Is Most Likely to Buck Trump?

August 9, 2016 at 10:07 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

James Hohmann: “Most politicians respond more to political incentives than principles. That’s the single most important insight to understanding how Washington really works.”

“Every Republican who has bucked Trump can be pretty easily categorized. A clear pattern emerges: the less directly and immediately accountable to Republican base voters an elected official is, the more likely he or she is to break with Trump.”

Insiders Concerned Trump Will Skip the Debates

August 9, 2016 at 8:15 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Playbook: “There is increasing concern in news and political circles that Donald Trump will not agree to the three slated presidential debates this fall, a historic break with political norms in the lead-up to the election. The three bouts — organized by the non-partisan Commission on Presidential Debates — are Sept. 26 at Hofstra University in New York, Oct. 9 at Washington University in St. Louis and Oct. 19 in Las Vegas. They are usually wonky and tightly scripted affairs, and offer the next true reset point in the race for the White House.”

“Debate moderators have not been announced, but Republican and Democratic sources, senior media executives and anchors in New York and Washington are casting serious doubt about whether Trump will agree to participate in the primetime events.”

Yes, It’s Probably Over Already

August 9, 2016 at 7:34 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Stuart Rothenberg: “Journalistic neutrality allegedly forces us to say that the race isn’t over until November, and most media organizations prefer to hype the presidential contest to generate viewers and readers rather than explain why a photo finish is unlikely.”

“But a dispassionate examination of the data, combined with a cold-blooded look at the candidates, the campaigns and presidential elections, produces only one possible conclusion: Hillary Clinton will defeat Donald Trump in November, and the margin isn’t likely to be as close as Barack Obama’s victory over Mitt Romney.”

GOP Establishment Donors Move to Clinton

August 9, 2016 at 7:32 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “In a typical election year, donors whose candidates have dropped out of the race funnel additional contributions to another candidate in the same party.”

“But this presidential election is different. Of the donors who gave at least $200 to Jeb Bush, Gov. John Kasich, Gov. Chris Christie or Senator Lindsey Graham in the Republican primaries, more of them have also contributed to Mrs. Clinton than to Mr. Trump, according to Federal Election Commission filings through June.”

“Those crossover donations are adding up. Mrs. Clinton has received $2.2 million from donors to candidates who dropped out of the Republican presidential primary, about $600,000 more than Mr. Trump has received from such donors, the filings showed.”

Clinton Extends Her National Lead

August 9, 2016 at 6:43 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new NBC News/SurveyMonkey poll shows Hillary Clinton leading Donald Trump in the presidential race by 10 points, 51% to 41%.

“Last week, Clinton’s lead jumped from 1 point to 8 points following her party’s convention, but the real question was whether this bounce would last. The latest tracking poll results indicate that Clinton’s traction over Trump has not slipped.”

Is Florida Even a Swing State Anymore?

August 9, 2016 at 6:03 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Michael Tomasky: “You will also hear them say a kajillion times until Election Day that Florida is a swing state. Well, yes. It has been historically. But the combination of massive demographic changes since 2012 and Trump’s anorexic performance among college-educated whites makes me wonder if Florida is a swing state this year at all. And while the Republicans might nominate a normal candidate in 2020, the state’s demography is galloping away from the GOP.”

Debate Venues Plan for Third Podium

August 9, 2016 at 6:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The venues that will host the presidential debates are drawing up plans for a three-person forum that would provide a lectern for a third-party candidate to stand on stage next to Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump,” Politico reports.

“The directive comes from producers working for the Commission on Presidential Debates and it’s meant, they say, to force the university hosts to be prepared and not as a reflection of the state of the race.”

Meanwhile, ABC News reports Clinton agreed to the debate schedule and challenged Trump to do the same.

GOP National Security Officials Won’t Back Trump

August 9, 2016 at 5:08 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A group of 50 former national security officials, all of whom have served Republican presidents from Richard M. Nixon to George W. Bush, have signed an open letter calling Donald Trump unqualified to be president and warning that, if elected, ‘he would be the most reckless President in American history,'” the Washington Post reports.

Susan Collins Says She Can’t Support Trump

August 8, 2016 at 10:06 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) writes in the Washington Post that she will not vote for Donald Trump:

“With the passage of time, I have become increasingly dismayed by his constant stream of cruel comments and his inability to admit error or apologize. But it was his attacks directed at people who could not respond on an equal footing — either because they do not share his power or stature or because professional responsibility precluded them from engaging at such a level — that revealed Mr. Trump as unworthy of being our president.”

“My conclusion about Mr. Trump’s unsuitability for office is based on his disregard for the precept of treating others with respect, an idea that should transcend politics. Instead, he opts to mock the vulnerable and inflame prejudices by attacking ethnic and religious minorities. Three incidents in particular have led me to the inescapable conclusion that Mr. Trump lacks the temperament, self-discipline and judgment required to be president.”

Curt Schilling Says He’ll Run for President

August 8, 2016 at 5:14 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Former Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling “seems to have lofty goals following his careers in baseball and broadcasting. The three-time World Series-winning pitcher recently revealed some pretty serious political plans in perhaps the most casual manner possible — in the comment section of one of his own Facebook posts complaining about the Democratic Party,” the Los Angeles Times reports.

Said Schilling: “I am going to run, soon. State office first, white house in 8 years.”

And then he added: “or 4 if by some amazing illegal event this country elects another Clinton.”

Can Trump Rebound?

August 8, 2016 at 4:56 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

John Cassidy: “Given the fundamentals—the state of the economy, the President’s approval ratings, and the fact that the Democrats are seeking to win a third term in the Oval Office—history suggests that this should be a close election. But Trump’s self-destructive antics, coming on top of what was a pretty effective demolition job on him at the Democratic Convention, have, for now at least, taken the pressure off Clinton.”

“While one hesitates to cite Newt Gingrich as an authority on anything other than zoos and his next book contract, there was a good deal of truth in what he said to the Washington Post a few days ago about Trump and Clinton: ‘The current race is which of these two is the more unacceptable, because right now neither of them is acceptable. Trump is helping her to win the election by proving he is more unacceptable than she is.'”

“Theoretically, at least, Trump still has time to reboot, embrace self-discipline, and prepare for the television debates, all the while hoping that another Clinton scandal or a ghastly news event helps him out. But he’ll have to confront a potential mutiny among his fellow-Republicans, a gaping disadvantage in field organization, and the widespread belief that he isn’t qualified to be President.”

Why GOPers Won’t Ever Rescind Trump Endorsements

Though we’ve seen some high profile Republican defections from Donald Trump in recent weeks, it’s amazing that most of the party’s elected officials won’t even consider backing away from Trump.
