Elizabeth Warren Steps Up to Take Down Trump

May 9, 2016 at 7:29 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 81 Comments

New York Times: “Ms. Warren is one of the few high-profile leaders in either party to repeatedly challenge Mr. Trump with clarity and directness, portraying him as both dangerous and a charlatan. She began her assault in a March 21 Facebook post, describing his candidacy as a ‘serious threat’ and calling him ‘a loser’ — one of the worst insults in the Trump lexicon.”

“And on Tuesday, the night Mr. Trump became the presumptive Republican nominee, she again took to Facebook to denounce him — a broadside that he seemed to be responding to when, just after 7 p.m. on Friday, he launched a series of Twitter posts deriding her as ‘goofy’ and as Hillary Clinton’s ‘flunky.'”

Trump Runs to Clinton’s Left on Many Issues

May 9, 2016 at 7:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 62 Comments

Washington Post: “The line of attack poses an unusual and vexing challenge for the Democratic front-runner, who has spent months embracing increasingly liberal positions in her primary fight with Sanders. After jockeying to win over voters on the left, the Clinton campaign is now tasked with pinpointing the best way to attack Trump — an ideological moving target who sometimes switches positions within the space of a day — while also reaching out to moderates and disaffected conservatives.”

Why Paul Ryan Might Want to Lose the House

Conventional wisdom suggests that while Democrats could win control of the White House and Senate this fall, the House is too far out of reach. Democrats would need to flip 3o House seats in order to take over.

Trump Will Focus on Policy After the Election

May 9, 2016 at 5:21 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 123 Comments

A source familiar with Donald Trump’s thinking told Politico that the billionaire businessman “was reluctant to add new layers of policy experts now, feeling it would only muddy his populist message that has been hyperfocused on illegal immigration, trade and fighting Islamic extremists.”

Said the person: “He doesn’t want to waste time on policy and thinks it would make him less effective on the stump. It won’t be until after he is elected but before he’s inaugurated that he will figure out exactly what he is going to do and who he is going to try to hire.”

Rubio Rules Out Running with Trump

May 9, 2016 at 5:03 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 42 Comments

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) on Facebook:

“While Republican voters have chosen Donald Trump as the presumptive GOP nominee, my previously stated reservations about his campaign and concerns with many of his policies remain unchanged. He will be best served by a running mate and by surrogates who fully embrace his campaign. As such, I have never sought, will not seek and do not want to be considered for Vice President.”

Three Reasons We May Want to Rethink 2016

May 9, 2016 at 4:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 39 Comments

This piece is only available to Political Wire members.

Nearly everything we know about politics suggests that Donald Trump starts the 2016 general election in a deep hole against Hillary Clinton. From his negative favorability ratings to broader demographic trends in the country, it’s hard to see how Trump can cobble together the 270 electoral votes he’ll need to win the White House.

Trump Aides Begin Plotting General Election Strategy

May 9, 2016 at 3:55 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 34 Comments

“Donald Trump’s top advisers spent much of Monday at Republican National Committee headquarters in Washington for a series of private meetings with RNC leaders, where they began to coordinate the party’s strategy and operations for the general election,” the Washington Post reports.

“Topics addressed during the Capitol Hill talks included finance, communications, opposition research, field operations, and data sharing, according to several Republican officials familiar with the sessions.”

Cain Urges Republicans to Rally Around Trump

May 9, 2016 at 2:57 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 47 Comments

Herman Cain told Fox News that Republicans like Mitt Romney need to back Donald Trump as the party nominee.

Said Cain: “Mitt and all of the anti-Trump, ‘never Trump’ folk, look behind you. There is no army. What they hear are the voices of these resistance people pushing back against the presumptive nominee. There’s no army back there.”

He added: “The message is, you’re talking to yourselves. Get your egos out of the way and get behind the presumptive nominee.”

Trump Backtracks on Raising Taxes

May 9, 2016 at 2:39 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 72 Comments

Donald Trump “backtracked on his remarks about raising taxes on wealthy Americans, saying the rich might simply get a smaller tax cut than he originally proposed,” Reuters reports.

Said Trump: “I’m not talking about a tax increase. I’m talking about a tremendous tax decrease, OK? I’m not talking a raise from where they are now; I’m talking about a raise from my low proposal.”

Ryan Would Not Back a Third Party

May 9, 2016 at 2:32 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 10 Comments

Speaker Paul Ryan told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that a third-party or independent bid by conservatives in 2016 “would be a disaster for our party. I have communicated that to plenty of people.”

He also said he’s committed to finding unity among Republicans when he meets with Donald Trump on Thursday.

Said Ryan: “We have right now a disunified Republican Party. We shouldn’t sweep it under the rug without addressing it. That would be to our detriment in the fall.”

Time Running Out to Find Trump Alternative

May 9, 2016 at 2:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 14 Comments

“Anti-Donald Trump Republicans hoping to get an alternative on the presidential ballot this November are quickly running out of time,” NBC News reports.

“Monday marked the first state ballot deadline for independent presidential candidates. And it just so happened to be in a state critically important to the GOP — Texas. An independent candidate must scrounge up almost 80,000 signatures to meet Monday’s deadline to appear on the state’s presidential ballot, according to Ballotpedia, a website that tracks ballot access requirements.”

Ryan Will Step Down as Chairman If Trump Wants

May 9, 2016 at 12:02 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 102 Comments

Speaker Paul Ryan said that he would step down as chairman of the Republican Party’s July convention if presumptive nominee Donald Trump asked him to do so, Reuters reports.

Said Ryan: “I’ll do whatever he asks me to do.”

Trump Keeps Hitting Everyone

May 9, 2016 at 11:58 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 56 Comments

Politico: “A week after vanquishing his sixteenth and final Republican rival en route to the party’s nomination, Trump is still in battle mode. From hitting the media for apparently misrepresenting his policy proposals to defending his personal and pointed attacks on the Clintons, the Manhattan real-estate mogul is throwing everything against the wall. And rather than reaching out to unify a GOP that is deeply divided over his candidacy, he dismissed the very idea as irrelevant.”

Extra Bonus Quote of the Day

May 9, 2016 at 11:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 31 Comments

“Even if you suspect Trump might win, if you contribute to his campaign, you’re buying a ticket on the crazy train. … You own everything that he does.”

— GOP strategist Tony Fratto, quoted by the Boston Globe, on why Donald Trump will have trouble raising money from traditional GOP donors.

Bevin Not Ready to Support Trump

May 9, 2016 at 10:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 20 Comments

Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin (R) said that he will remain silent on his preference for president until Republicans select a nominee at their national convention in Cleveland, the Lexington Herald Leader reports.

Said Bevin: “At this point, weighing in on who I am going to vote for, I think, is a mistake for me or any other person. The reality is let the thing unfold. Let a nominee come forward from each respective party.”

Bevin acknowledged that Donald Trump is the presumptive GOP nominee, but he said he has “never been big” on telling people whom he votes for.

Why Trump’s Flip-Flop on Taxes Matters

May 9, 2016 at 8:55 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 72 Comments

First Read: “Donald Trump’s recent declaration that taxes for the wealthy should increase is an amazing turn of events in this presidential campaign and for the Republican Party. For starters, it’s a jaw-dropping flip-flop on policy.”

“But Trump’s position on taxes isn’t merely a policy flip-flop; it runs counter to today’s entire Republican Party and conservative movement. Think about if a Democratic presidential nominee called for repealing Obamacare, or admitted, ‘You know what — I think George W. Bush’s Iraq war was the right call after all.’ Folks, those things are the equivalent of your 2016 presumptive GOP presidential nominee calling for higher taxes on the rich. In our lifetime of covering politics, the position of almost every elected Republican politician has been that lower tax rates, including for the well-off, is the key to economic prosperity, and that any tax hike on the rich is to be opposed at all costs.”

“And so you can see how Trump’s position on taxes could make it hard for restoring unity with key Republicans, especially with House Speaker Paul Ryan, who is an ardent tax-cutter.”

Majority Oppose ‘Bathroom Bills’ for Transgender People

May 9, 2016 at 8:48 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 60 Comments

A new CNN/ORC poll shows that 57% of Americans disapprove of “bathroom bills” that require transgender people to use restrooms that correspond with their birth gender, while 38% approve.
