Extra Bonus Quote of the Day

February 18, 2016 at 8:18 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 86 Comments

“The senator is upset with a political and economic system that is often rigged to help the privileged few at the expense of everyone else, particularly the least advantaged. He believes that we have a two-tiered society that increasingly dooms millions of our fellow citizens to lives of poverty and hopelessness. He thinks many corporations seek and benefit from corporate welfare while ordinary citizens are denied opportunities and a level playing field. I agree with him.”

— Charles Koch, writing in the Washington Post, saying he agrees with Sen. Bernie Sanders on the problem with money in politics.

Look at How the Republican Party Has Changed

If someone predicted in 2010 that Gov. Nikki Haley would endorse Sen. Marco Rubio for president as part of a concerted effort to consolidate the Republican establishment, most would have thought the idea was crazy. Back then, Haley and Rubio were leading the rise of the Tea Party that bucked the GOP establishment every chance it got.

Clyburn Will Endorse Clinton

February 18, 2016 at 7:30 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 88 Comments

South Carolina Rep. Jim Clyburn (D-SC) plans to endorse Hillary Clinton, BuzzFeed reports.

“Clyburn’s is one of the most coveted Democratic endorsements in South Carolina, where Clinton is currently polling better than Bernie Sanders. Clyburn originally intended to remain neutral through the South Carolina Democratic primary like he did in 2008. However, in recent weeks, the third-ranking Democrat in the House has indicated he might instead become involved in the race, citing pressure from immediate family members, who are Clinton supporters.”

Bonus Quote of the Day

February 18, 2016 at 4:35 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 52 Comments

“I’m not seeing a lot of movement there. He’s got Lindsey down there helping him, and his brother came in to help him, and he’s still at about what, 10 percent? Which is way behind top three.”

— Former Sen. Bob Dole (R-KS), quoted by National Review, expressing disappointment in Jeb Bush’s presidential campaign.

Clinton Maintains Wide Lead in South Carolina

February 18, 2016 at 4:22 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 59 Comments

A new Bloomberg poll in South Carolina finds Hillary Clinton leading Bernie Sanders, 53% to 31%.

“But the survey also carries warning signs for Clinton about where the loyalties of white Southern Democrats lie as the campaigns prepare for the crush of Super Tuesday contests just three days after South Carolina’s Feb. 27 primary. And it underscores how crucial it will be for Clinton to sustain her lead with black and Hispanic voters, and turn them out, in those contests and beyond.”A new Monmouth poll finds Clinton leading Sanders, 59% to 30%.

Quote of the Day

February 18, 2016 at 3:21 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 102 Comments

“It’s very unlikely that any nominee, however well qualified, could reach the level that would be necessary to satisfy both sets of criteria. And for that reason, it might be just as well not to have a hearing that would, sort of, might mislead the American people into thinking that this is just about the qualifications of the candidate, because it’s bigger than that.”

— Sen. Pat Toomey (R-PA), quoted by the AP, saying he would not support hearings for President Obama’s Supreme Court nominee because he or she will ultimately change the balance of the court.

Pope Says Trump Is Not Christian

February 18, 2016 at 1:15 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 127 Comments

“Inserting himself into the Republican presidential race, Pope Francis suggested that Donald Trump ‘is not Christian’ because of the harshness of his campaign promises to deport more immigrants and force Mexico to pay for a wall along the border,” the New York Times reports.

Said Pope Francis: “A person who thinks only about building walls, wherever they may be, and not building bridges, is not Christian.”

Why the Stakes Are So High in Nevada

February 18, 2016 at 9:18 am EST By Taegan Goddard 127 Comments

First Read: “Both Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders have plenty on the line here in Nevada. A Clinton loss — in a state where she held the early organizational and demographic advantages — would launch another week’s worth of negative headlines for her campaign, hardly the momentum it wants going into South Carolina.”

“So it would be painful loss. But as we wrote earlier this week, a Sanders loss could even be more impactful because it would set up Hillary Clinton to start running the table over the next two weeks in South Carolina and the southern March 1 states. And if that’s the case, come March 2, she might have a delegate lead that’s impossible to catch up to given the proportional nature of all of the Democratic races. So Sanders needs a win to keep the pressure on Clinton, and Clinton needs a win to finally start pulling away.”

Trump vs. Cruz Would Be a Spectacle

February 18, 2016 at 9:11 am EST By Taegan Goddard 34 Comments

Rick Klein: “Ted Cruz isn’t making friends. That’s no headline – though that doesn’t take away from the epic press conference he held Wednesday to try to refocus scattered storylines that are threatening his campaign. Cruz laid out the case against his opponents like a prosecutor, even urging Donald Trump to file his lawsuit so Cruz could take his deposition personally. Cruz isn’t alone in arguing that Trump isn’t a true conservative. That may not ultimately matter, if South Carolina polls are to be believed.”

“But Cruz, once again, is showing an inclination to meet Trump’s showmanship with his own brand of the same. If he and Trump wind up being among the finalists for the nomination, all their world’s a stage, and the Donald may have met a worthy match.”

February 18, 2016 at 7:26 am EST By Taegan Goddard 188 Comments

Trump Holds Big National Lead

February 18, 2016 at 7:11 am EST By Taegan Goddard 20 Comments

A new CBS News poll finds Donald Trump with a big national lead over the GOP presidential field with 35%, followed by Ted Cruz at 18%, Marco Rubio at 12%, John Kasich at 11%, Ben Carson at 6% and Jeb Bush at 4%.

He holds a double digit lead among Republicans and independents, men and women, white evangelicals, and Americans of all income levels. He leads among Republican voters of all age and education levels, but does particularly well among voters without college degrees.”

A new USA Today/Suffolk poll shows Trump leading with 35%, followed by Cruz at 20% and Rubio at 17%.

A new Reuters/Ipsos poll finds Trump leading with 40%, followed by Cruz at 17%, Rubio at 11%, Carson at 10% and Bush at 8%.

Why Was Scalia Staying Free at Texas Ranch?

February 18, 2016 at 7:08 am EST By Taegan Goddard 93 Comments

Justice Antonin Scalia was taking a free vacation at a ranch in Texas when he was found dead, the Washington Post reports

The trip was apparently a gift from the ranch’s owner, who just last year obtained a favorable result from the Supreme Court.

A Divided GOP Establishment Will Not Win

February 18, 2016 at 6:48 am EST By Taegan Goddard 44 Comments

Nate Cohn: “If the Republican Party remains divided for much longer, it will start getting more difficult for a mainstream candidate to win the nomination.”

“On Super Tuesday, March 1, 25% of the delegates to the Republican national convention will be awarded. If the mainstream field hasn’t been narrowed by that point, it will become very hard to avoid serious damage to the candidate who ultimately emerges as the party’s anointed favorite. The top mainstream candidate could easily fall more than 100 delegates short of what he might have earned in a winnowed field. He would even be in danger of earning no delegates at all in several of the largest states because of one number: 20%.”

“That’s the threshold for earning delegates in Texas, Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama and Vermont, which combine to award 57 percent of the delegates on Super Tuesday and 14% of all of the delegates in the Republican race.”

We May Be Surprised in Nevada

If there’s going to be a surprise election result this weekend it’s likely to be in Nevada where the polling of the Democratic caucuses is sparse and seen as unreliable.
