Sanders Vows to Fight On

June 8, 2016 at 7:13 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 210 Comments

“Revolutions rarely give way to gracious expressions of defeat,” the New York Times reports.

“And so, despite the crushing California results that rolled in for him on Tuesday night, despite the insurmountable delegate math and the growing pleas that he end his quest for the White House, Senator Bernie Sanders took to the stage in Santa Monica and basked, bragged and vowed to fight on.”

“In a speech of striking stubbornness, he ignored the history-making achievement of his Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton, who became the first woman in American history to clinch the presidential nomination of a major political party.”

Politico quoted Sanders: “The struggle continues.”

Clinton Claims the Democratic Nomination

June 8, 2016 at 7:04 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 32 Comments

“Hillary Clinton claimed the Democratic presidential nomination on Tuesday night after decisive victories in the California, New Jersey and New Mexico primaries, and she quickly appealed to supporters of Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont to unite with her against Donald Trump,” the New York Times reports.

“With the 14-month Democratic race nearing a close, Mrs. Clinton savored the biggest night of her extraordinary journey from lawyer, wife and first lady to senator, secretary of state and, now, the first woman to win a major party’s nomination. At a rally in Brooklyn, she took the stage with her hands clasped over her heart in gratitude, then threw open her arms in joy and savored a long moment as a jubilant crowd waved American flags and chanted ‘Hillary.'”

McConnell Says Trump Should Apologize

June 8, 2016 at 7:01 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 18 Comments

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) said it was “stupid” for Donald Trump to single out a judge’s Mexican heritage and said the Republican presidential candidate should apologize and “get on script,” McClatchy reports.

He did not, though, back away from supporting the New York real estate magnate.

The 11 Battleground States

June 8, 2016 at 7:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 63 Comments

Politico‘s analysis of polling data “suggests 11 states will determine the next president: Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Michigan, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Wisconsin. All were battleground states in the previous two elections. But that doesn’t mean the map is constant: As the states’ demographics change, and the parties’ relative appeal among various groups transform, some states move toward one party or the other over the long term.”

“While those changes – combined with the unusual nature of Trump’s campaign – add an element of uncertainty to the campaign, most pollsters agree that Clinton and the Democrats will enter the general election with a perceptible advantage: Of the 11 states most likely to determine the victor, President Barack Obama won all 11 in 2008, and 10 of the 11 in 2012.”

Trump’s Taunt of Reporter Will Haunt His Campaign

June 8, 2016 at 6:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 18 Comments

The scene of Donald Trump mocking a New York Times reporter with a congenital disability garners the presumed Republican nominee some of his highest negative ratings among focus groups, Politico has learned.

“Amid all the talk about borders and registrations and ‘tough’ dealmaking with foreign powers that has alarmed even many within his own party, it is his impression of Kovaleski that supporters of the presumed Democratic nominee, Hillary Clinton, will stand out in voters’ minds as a negative.”

Trump Tried to Do Business with Libyan Dictator

June 7, 2016 at 6:30 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 118 Comments

BuzzFeed: “Donald Trump tried to raise money from the regime of Libyan dictator Muammar al-Qaddafi two years before a 2011 revolution toppled the brutal leader, according to four people with knowledge of the effort.”

“Trump even tried to set up a meeting with the tyrant himself, three of the sources say, to explore business ventures — despite the Libyan leader’s notorious sponsorship of terrorism that killed scores of Americans.”

Trump Issues Non-Apology Apology

June 7, 2016 at 5:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 77 Comments

Donald Trump issued a statement saying it “is unfortunate that my comments have been misconstrued as a categorical attack against people of Mexican heritage,” but the statement did not contain an apology, McClatchy reports.

What Hillary Clinton Sounded Like In College

June 7, 2016 at 4:54 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 60 Comments

The Atlantic: “The voice in the audio clip is unrecognizable. But it belongs to Hillary Clinton, who was making her first major public address 47 years ago this spring at Wellesley College. And if the voice is hard to place, it’s the words that are really difficult to reconcile with her present-day image.”

GOP Lawmaker Quits Party Over Trump

June 7, 2016 at 4:37 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 72 Comments

Iowa state Sen. David Johnson (R) told the Des Moines Register that he has suspended his Republican Party membership to protest “the racist remarks and judicial jihad” by presumptive GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump.

Said Johnson: “I will not stand silent if the party of Lincoln and the end of slavery buckles under the racial bias of a bigot.”

Kirk Withdraws Support for Trump

June 7, 2016 at 3:58 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 108 Comments

Sen. Mark Kirk (R-IL) issued a statement saying he would not back his party’s nominee for president:

I have spent my life building bridges and tearing down barriers–not building walls. That’s why I find Donald Trump’s belief that an American-born judge of Mexican descent is incapable of fairly presiding over his case is not only dead wrong, it is un-American…

It is absolutely essential that we are guided by a commander-in-chief with a responsible and proper temperament, discretion and judgment. Our President must be fit to command the most powerful military the world has ever seen, including an arsenal of thousands of nuclear weapons. After much consideration, I have concluded that Donald Trump has not demonstrated the temperament necessary to assume the greatest office in the world.

Rubio Is Very Unpopular In Florida

June 7, 2016 at 3:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 40 Comments

A new Public Policy Polling survey in Florida finds that Sen. Marco Rubio remains quite unpopular in the state in the wake of his failed Presidential bid, and that voters aren’t interested in seeing him run for the Senate this year.

Key finding: “Only 32% of voters in the state approve of the job Rubio is doing as Senator, to 54% who disapprove. Those numbers make him one of the least popular Senators in the country.”

June 7, 2016 at 1:47 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 253 Comments

Sen. Jeff Flake (R-AZ) told the AP that the Republicans cannot win in November with Trump as the party’s standard-bearer.

Said Flake: “Let’s face it: meet the old Trump, just like the new Trump. We’ve got what we’ve got. That’s not somebody who can win the White House.”

He added: “Where there’s no talk of a convention challenge or anything else, this might spur it.”

Rubio Now Says He Won’t Speak In Support of Trump

June 7, 2016 at 1:25 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 34 Comments

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) told Roll Call that if he speaks at the Republican National Convention this July, he will not be on stage as a Donald Trump surrogate.

Rubio said that his vision is “substantially different from what Donald is offering, and that’s why I’m not sure I’m going to be asked to speak at the convention.”

How Trump Manipulates TV Coverage

June 7, 2016 at 1:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 27 Comments

BuzzFeed: “Conversations with more than a dozen reporters, producers, and executives across the major networks reveal internal tensions about the wall-to-wall coverage Trump has received and the degree to which the Republican frontrunner has — or hasn’t — been challenged on their air.”

“Two network sources also confirmed the unprecedented control the television networks have surrendered to Trump in a series of private negotiations, allowing him to dictate specific details about placement of cameras at his event, to ensure coverage consists primarily of a single shot of his face.”

Watch a GOP Lawmaker Defend Donald Trump

June 7, 2016 at 12:36 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 97 Comments

In attempting to defend Donald Trump in the wake of his racist statements, Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-NY) shows the tremendous difficulties Republicans will have for the next five months.

Can Republicans Stick with Trump for 5 More Months?

June 7, 2016 at 11:44 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 111 Comments

Chris Cillizza: “For party leaders who’ve lined up with Trump amid polling that suggested he was running surprisingly competitively against Democrat Hillary Clinton, the time is rapidly approaching to either hop off the Trump train or decide you are riding it all the way to Nov. 8.”

“At the moment, it appears as though most party leaders are trying to dangle a leg off the train while still holding on.”
