What’s Behind the Attempt to Defund Obamacare

September 19, 2013 at 4:26 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Dave Weigel: “As illusory as the “defund” campaign is, it’s flashy enough to obscure the gains won by hardliners. Every Republican leaving the meeting today suggested that a compromise funding bill or a compromise debt limit hike would set spending at the levels set by sequestration. At his short press conference, Boehner agreed with that. Nebraska Rep. Lee Terry sounded as cynical as Cole about Obamacare, saying it was “worth falling on your sword” to stop it, not saying that doing so would work. He was much more confident, and more insistent, that the eventual deals would force Obama to approve the Keystone XL pipeline.”

“These would be solid Republican wins, enabled–as far as the conservatives can tell–by the most hard-core members’ willingness to humiliate their leadership. Republicans can see exactly how this plan will make that happen. They’re not able to say how the plan will actually defund Obamacare.”

Former Clinton Mistress Claims Hillary is Bisexual

September 19, 2013 at 4:11 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 1 Comment

Gennifer Flowers told the Daily Mail that she and Bill Clinton would still be together today, were it not the birth of Clinton’s daughter, Chelsea.

Said Flowers: “Bill and I would be together today if it wasn’t for politics. It was me, Bill and Hillary. Then they had Chelsea and the stakes got too high.”

She also claimed that Hillary Clinton was bisexual: “I just know what Bill told me and that was that he was aware that Hillary was bisexual and he didn’t care. He should know. He said Hillary had eaten more pussy than he had.”

De Blasio Headed for a Blow Out

September 19, 2013 at 4:03 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Quinnipiac poll in New York City finds “yawning racial gaps on many issues” as Bill de Blasio (D) leads Joe Lhota (R) on every measure except taxes and has a commanding 66% to 25% lead among likely voters.

Said pollster Maurice Carroll: “The same kind of coalition that won de Blasio the Democratic primary is working for him in the general election campaign. He’s OK among white voters and gang-busters among black and Hispanic voters.”

Boehner Challenges Cruz

September 19, 2013 at 3:51 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) joined other Republican lawmakers in calling for Senate conservatives to put up a strong fight against President Obama’s health-care law, the Washington Post reports.

When asked about comments made by Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), he said, “It’s time for them to pick up the mantle and get the job done.”

“Cruz has spent two months agitating Republicans in the House and Senate to risk shutting down the federal government in the effort to strip funding for implementing Obamacare. After Boehner announced Wednesday his intention to take that risky strategy, Cruz issued a statement that Senate Majority Leader Harry M. Reid (D-NV) likely had the votes to strip that language in the Senate and said it was up to House Republicans to “stand firm” when the legislation bounces back across the Capitol to them.”

Will GOP Plan to Defund Obamacare Backfire?

September 19, 2013 at 11:49 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Salon: “Conservatives in the Senate have spent weeks and weeks hectoring House Republicans to stand true to GOP principles and make funding for the federal government contingent upon Democrats agreeing to defund Obamacare.”

“It’s about to blow up in their faces, and probably turn several of their more moderate colleagues into collateral damage.”

Bonus Quote of the Day

September 19, 2013 at 11:39 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“You have never in the history of the United States seen the threat of
not raising the debt ceiling to extort a president or a governing
party.”

— President Obama, quoted by MSNBC.

Court Overturns DeLay’s Convictions

September 19, 2013 at 11:14 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A Texas Court of Appeals has overturned the conviction of former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-TX), KHOU reports.

“DeLay was convicted in 2010 for his alleged role in a scheme to influence Texas elections. He was found guilty of money laundering and conspiracy to commit money laundering after he was accused of helping funnel corporate money to Texas candidates in 2002.”

A Way Out of the Budget Stalemate

September 19, 2013 at 11:11 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

First Read anticipates the most likely scenario to end the budget standoff:

“If Boehner doesn’t have the votes to be the negotiator here, a small group of Senate Republicans (think McCain, Graham, Corker etc.) work with the White House and Senate Dems for a compromise deal, and then Boehner throws in the towel and allows the House Democrats to provide a majority of the votes. It’s how every other showdown has ended so it’s the most likely ending this time. But can Boehner survive doing this again?”

Our Shameful Congress

September 19, 2013 at 11:11 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Norm Ornstein:
“As readers of my past columns know, I was not exactly optimistic as we
approached crunch time over the debt limit in 2011. But I am far more
pessimistic now. At a dinner I attended Monday night with a host of
those individuals deeply involved in fiscal matters, it became clear
that there are no talks going on now–neither formal nor back channel–to
avoid a series of crises over spending and the debt ceiling. The House
majority is in profound disarray, unable to muster majorities for
anything on the spending front as the new fiscal year approaches.”

He concludes: “We are careening toward economic disruption triggered by
outrageous demands that jeopardize the economy and endanger the most
vulnerable among us. Shameful is the only way to describe it.”

Meanwhile, David Hawkings has a more optimistic view of how the current standoff could end.

Energy Bill Caught in the Crossfire

September 19, 2013 at 11:05 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Forget the high-stakes showdown over a spending bill to keep the federal government from shutting down,” USA Today
reports.

“When it comes to political dysfunction of this Congress,
Exhibit A is unfolding in the Senate over a modest, bipartisan
energy-efficiency bill. Sponsored by Sen. Rob Portman (R-OH) the
legislation has become entangled in a nasty debate over completely
unrelated issues — including ‘Obamacare’ and prostitution allegations.
The spat has even sparked an ethics complaint raising allegations of
bribery and intimidation.”

Quote of the Day

September 19, 2013 at 10:48 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“We reached a turning point, and we have to speak for our base that isn’t being heard any more. There isn’t unanimity anymore; you can’t deliver a bloc…. Blind loyalty–I don’t think that’s an option anymore. People are going assert what they think is best for their base, their district, and more importantly, how the Democrats are going to look going into 2014.”

— Rep. Raul Grijalva (D-AZ), quoted by National Journal, on liberal Democrats starting to take on President Obama.

Connolly Holds Narrow Lead in Boston

September 19, 2013 at 9:11 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Suffolk Poll in Boston shows John Connolly leading the mayoral race with 16%, just head of Martin Walsh and Daniel Conley who are deadlocked at 12%.

Said pollster David Paleologos: “Since the July poll, Councilor-at-large John Connolly has opened up a little distance from the pack. If the undecided voters continue to fall in the same proportion as they have over the past two months, Connolly may be the only candidate who breaks through the magical 20 percent threshold, which would earn him a place on the final ballot for mayor.”

GOP Lawmaker Claims ‘Nothing Happens’ if U.S. Defaults

September 19, 2013 at 9:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. John Fleming (R-LA) told Politico that “nothing happens” if the debt ceiling is reached.

Said Fleming: “Technically, it’s not possible to default because there’s always enough revenue to cover the interest. If we defaulted it was because the president chose to default, not because we ran out of money.”

Boehner Hits Obama for Not Negotiating

Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) released a video slamming President Obama for negotiating with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Syria but not with congressional Republicans over the debt ceiling.

Most GOP Voters Don’t Care if Debt Crisis Hurts Economy

September 19, 2013 at 8:27 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Greg Sargent digs into the new Washington Post/ABC News poll on the debt ceiling and finds this amazing nugget:

“Among Republicans who believe that not raising the debt ceiling would cause serious harm to the economy, a majority of them wants Congress not to raise it anyway.”
