All About Obama for House Republicans

January 15, 2014 at 8:02 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“It’s just two weeks into 2014, but House Republicans are already convinced that the key to winning November’s elections is to talk about President Obama as much as possible,” Politico reports.

“In public and private discussions, Obama remains the single-minded obsession of all top House Republicans. They can’t get through a sentence without mentioning Obama or Obamacare. When top Republican leaders gathered last weekend at a boutique inn outside Washington for their annual planning retreat, the bulk of the conversation centered on Obamacare and presenting alternatives to what they consider Democrats’ failed economic policies.”

What Were Christie’s Aides Trying to Do?

January 15, 2014 at 7:01 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) struggled “to regain his footing, giving an address in which he called upon the state to refocus on his agenda. But his inability to explain the actions of top aides and allies in causing a massive days-long traffic jam has spawned a storm of conjecture about what their real motives may have been,” the Washington Post reports.

“The explanation — that it was a move to punish a Democratic mayor who had refused to endorse Christie’s reelection bid — is being met with skepticism, both in the halls of the state capitol in Trenton and in Fort Lee, where the tie-up occurred for several days in September.”

Democrats Worry About Unanswered Ads

January 15, 2014 at 7:00 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Democrats are increasingly anxious about an onslaught of television ads hitting vulnerable Senate and House candidates for their support of the new health law, since many lack the resources to fight back in the early stages of the midterm campaign,” the New York Times reports.

“The unusually aggressive early run of television ads, which has been supplemented by other conservative initiatives, has gone largely unanswered, and strategists in both parties agree it is taking a toll on its targets.”

Who Will Hollande Bring to the White House?

January 15, 2014 at 6:45 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The French president’s burgeoning sex scandal is emerging as a diplomatic headache for the White House amid uncertainty as to whom exactly François Hollande plans to bring to next month’s state dinner,” The Hill reports.

Most Don’t Think Christie is a Bully

January 15, 2014 at 6:44 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Quinnipiac poll finds New Jersey voters believe Gov. Chris Christie (R) is more of a leader than a bully by a 54% to 40% margin — one of his lowest “bully” scores since the question was first asked in 2010.

In addition, voters who have heard about the George Washington Bridge controversy say by 66% to 22% that the governor did not personally order the traffic jam. Even Democrats say 53% to 32% that Christie was not involved.

Huge Paydays for Super PAC Chiefs

January 15, 2014 at 6:41 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Recently released tax forms shed light on the big salaries that an elite corps of political organizers earned during the 2012 elections — and those who made the most often boasted the fewest wins,” Roll Call reports.

“The new disclosures reveal fresh specifics about the six- and seven-figure salaries reaped by the political consultants, lawyers, fundraisers and media buyers who ran the top super PACs and politically active nonprofits in 2012… The size of their payday has, until recently, been undisclosed. Many super PACs that reported their spending to the Federal Election Commission omitted salary or payroll information, making it impossible to know just how much their top executives made.”

Hagan Avoids Obama Visit to North Carolina

January 15, 2014 at 6:25 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Kay Hagan (D-NC) is skipping President Obama’s visit to her home state, the Los Angeles Times reports.

“The notable absence at Obama’s first trip outside the Beltway in this election year highlights a perennial quandary for embattled candidates and less-than-popular presidents. With a battle for control of the Senate looming and the president’s approval rating deflated, Democrats and the White House will spend much of this year grappling with whether their most vulnerable candidates will be helped or harmed by a visit from Obama and how to keep those candidates some distance — but not too far — from the president.”

Branstad to Seek 6th Term

January 14, 2014 at 10:02 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad (R) “is expected to kick off a historic, juggernaut campaign for re-election that many political analysts suspect will be a cakewalk, even though a majority of Iowans think the Republican has been in office long enough,” the Des Moines Register reports.

“Iowa Democrats’ inability to produce a big-name challenger, and Branstad’s high popularity and job approval ratings, mean the governor’s in a strong position, strategists say.”

Jolly vs. Sink in Florida Special Election

January 14, 2014 at 9:11 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

David Jolly (R) has defeated two GOP rivals to win his party’s nomination in the race to replace the late Rep. C.W. Bill Young in Florida’s 13th District, Roll Call reports.

“Jolly will face former state Chief Financial Officer Alex Sink in the March 11 general election in this St. Petersburg-based district. This special election marks the first truly competitive special election of the cycle, and many political insiders view it as a bellwether for the cycle.”

Judge Strikes Down Oklahoma’s Ban on Gay Marriage

January 14, 2014 at 6:03 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A federal judge in Oklahoma ruled that “the state’s constitutional amendment barring same-sex marriage violated the federal Constitution, the latest in a string of legal victories for gay rights and one that occurred in the heart of the Bible Belt,” the New York Times reports.

“The decision will not take effect immediately, and Oklahoma is almost certain to appeal, leaving prospects uncertain for gay couples in the state.”

Senate Fails to Advance Bill Extending Jobless Benefits

January 14, 2014 at 5:54 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Efforts to reach a bipartisan deal extending benefits for the long-term unemployed floundered Tuesday, sunk by squabbles over Senate procedure magnified by both parties’ efforts to reap political points in an election year,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“Lawmakers had been working for weeks to restore emergency unemployment insurance benefits that expired on Dec. 28, but progress ground to a halt Tuesday as tensions rose over Republicans’ role in the Senate’s legislative process.”

“A series of closed-door meetings and votes produced no headway in reaching an agreement on an extension of the unemployment insurance. A key procedural vote to end debate on the bill extending the benefits failed in a party-line 55-45 vote, ending more than a week’s worth of unsuccessful negotiations. The measure needed 60 votes to advance.”

Clinton’s Hawkish Record Faces Test in 2016

January 14, 2014 at 12:30 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Michael Crowley: “Clinton has demonstrated a well-documented willingness to use American military power overseas. Gates’ book is just the latest evidence, along with previous reporting and original interviews with current and former Obama officials, of the strikingly hawkish voice Clinton offered during Obama Situation Room debates…In fact, Clinton may have been the administration’s most reliable advocate for military action. On at least three crucial issues–Afghanistan, Libya, and the bin Laden raid–Clinton took a more aggressive line than Gates, a Bush-appointed Republican.”

Christie Was With Official During Traffic Fiasco

January 14, 2014 at 11:57 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Gov. Chris Christie (R) “was with the official who arranged the closure of local lanes leading to the George Washington Bridge on Sept. 11, 2013 — the third day of the closures, and well after they had triggered outrage from local officials beset by heavy traffic,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“It isn’t known what, if anything, Mr. Christie discussed with David Wildstein that day.”

Condoleeza Rice to Headline GOP Fundraiser

January 14, 2014 at 10:33 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Former secretary of state Condoleezza Rice will headline a big fundraising dinner for House Republicans in March, the Washington Post reports.

“Rice has gradually stepped into the political arena since departing George W. Bush’s White House. Her speech at the Republican National Convention in August 2012 earned widespread praise, and she has also begun raising money for GOP causes, particularly for a Republican women’s political action committee.”

“Rice has said she’s not interested in running for office, but speculation persists that she could run in 2016.”
