Trump Sues Maher Over Ape Remark

February 5, 2013 at 8:58 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Donald Trump sued comedian Bill Maher after saying he proved that he was not “the spawn of his mother having sex with an orangutan,” Entertainment Weekly reports.

“During a guest appearance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno last month, Maher quipped that Trump must be ‘the spawn of his mother having sex with an orangutan’ (Exhibit A: his orange hair). In a riff off of Trump’s own offer to give $5 million to the charity of Barack Obama’s choice if the President released his college paperwork, Maher said he would do the same for Trump if the real estate mogul supplied proof that he is not descended from an ape.”

Feds Investigating Jackson’s Wife

February 5, 2013 at 8:34 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A federal financial probe of the once-politically powerful Jesse and Sandi Jackson has evolved into two separate investigations, with federal authorities taking an independent look at former Ald. Sandi Jackson,” the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

“Included in the scrutiny of Sandi Jackson, who resigned from her 7th Ward aldermanic position last month, is her access and use of her husband’s congressional campaign money, including credit card charges, as well as the movement of money from one account to another, sources say.”

When the Government Can Kill You

February 5, 2013 at 8:05 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

NBC News obtained a confidential Justice Department memo which concludes that “the U.S. government can order the killing of American citizens if they are believed to be ‘senior operational leaders’ of al-Qaida or ‘an associated force’ — even if there is no intelligence indicating they are engaged in an active plot to attack the U.S.”

Marc Ambinder: “So here’s what that means: Even if the person is not actively planning terrorist attacks against the U.S., because of the nature of terrorist attacks in general, merely his membership in an organization that is planning those attacks meets the requisite definition of imminence.”

IRS Raises Tax Brackets. Scammers Raise Their Game.

The IRS just announced new tax brackets for 2026, sparking a rush of Americans updating their financial details online. Scammers are watching too—ready to pounce on exposed personal data.

The truth? They don’t hack the IRS. They just buy your financial info—from data brokers selling names, emails, and income ranges to anyone who pays.

Once your data’s out there, it’s open season for phishing, impersonation, and identity theft. That’s why I recommend Incogni. Their team forces data brokers to delete your data and keeps it off the web automatically. Try Incogni here and get 55% off your subscription with code POLITICALWIRE.

Ryan’s New Path to Power

February 5, 2013 at 7:47 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) tells friends that his “most obvious route to power — a run for the White House in 2016 — holds less appeal to him with each passing day,” Politico reports.

“Instead, Ryan seems increasingly intrigued with the prospect of amassing more power within Congress, using his juice in the House leadership to promote his trademark Medicare plan and engineer spending cuts. The friends say this path could ultimately lead him to an eventual run for House GOP leader, or even speaker, an option they surmise he has warmed to since the election.”

“At the same time, Ryan continues to cultivate a national political and financial network that would serve him in any role.”

Menendez Says Allegations are False

February 5, 2013 at 7:34 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“And after ducking reporters for a week,” Sen. Robert Menendez (D-NJ) “for the first time in a brief interview on Capitol Hill directly addressed the allegations that he consorted with prostitutes in the Caribbean, angrily labeling it all a smear campaign,” the Newark Star Ledger reports.

Said Menendez: “It’s amazing to me that anonymous, nameless, faceless individuals on a website can drive that type of story into the mainstream, but that’s what they just did. The bottom line is (that) all those smears are absolutely false.”

Democrats Ready Voting Reforms

February 5, 2013 at 7:27 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“With studies suggesting that long lines at the polls cost Democrats hundreds of thousands of votes in November, party leaders are beginning a push to make voting and voter registration easier, setting up a likely new conflict with Republicans over a deeply polarizing issue,” the New York Times reports.

“White House officials have told Congressional leaders that the president plans to press for action on Capitol Hill, and Democrats say they expect him to highlight the issue in his State of the Union address next week. Democrats in the House and Senate have already introduced bills that would require states to provide online voter registration and allow at least 15 days of early voting, among other things.”

Brennan Faces Senate Grilling

February 5, 2013 at 7:00 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

John Brennan, President Obama’s choice to be the next CIA director, “will face tough questions at his Senate confirmation hearing Thursday, but it appears unlikely that lawmakers’ concerns will derail his nomination,” the Los Angeles Times reports.

Tagg Romney Will Not Make Senate Bid

February 4, 2013 at 5:49 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Tagg Romney emails ABC News: “I have been humbled by the outreach I received this weekend
encouraging me to become a candidate for the US Senate, but the timing
just doesn’t work.”

Lautenberg’s Meager Haul Suggests He May Retire

February 4, 2013 at 5:43 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) “raised just more than $11,000 in
the last three months of 2012 — a paltry total for any incumbent
preparing to seek re-election,” Roll Call reports.

“Lautenberg faces a tough
Democratic primary challenge from Newark Mayor Cory Booker, who
announced last month that he is exploring a bid for the seat.”

Napolitano Mulls Presidential Bid

February 4, 2013 at 4:25 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “So, what happens if Hillary Clinton doesn’t run in 2016? It is hard to imagine the presidential field without a woman contender, and here’s one to keep your eye on: Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano. Napolitano is quietly making it known that she is considering the race, and there is reason to take her seriously.”

“Still, running for the White House from the cabinet is not an easy thing to do. Not since then-Commerce Secretary Herbert Hoover did it in 1928 has anyone successfully made the leap from the president’s cabinet to the Oval Office.”

Obama Backing Off Assault Weapons Ban?

February 4, 2013 at 4:16 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Obama “traveled to the nation’s heartland to press his case for tougher gun laws on Monday, even as evidence mounted in Washington that expanded background checks on gun sales may emerge as a legislative compromise in the bitterly divisive cultural debate,” the New York Times reports.

“At the event, Mr. Obama declared ‘universal background checks’ to be supported by the ‘vast majority of Americans’ and called for quick passage in Congress of legislation expanding their reach… But the president set a different political standard for a potential assault weapons ban, saying only that it ‘deserves a vote in Congress because weapons of war have no place on our streets.'”

Politico notes Obama “lamented a key lesson he learned during his first term as
president: That no legislation is done until the moment he affixes his
signature — which leaves a lot of work left to do.”

“My greatest fear in the state of Maine: newspapers. I’m not a fan of newspapers.”

— Maine Gov. Paul LePage (R), quoted by the Waterville Morning Sentinel.

Gerrymandering Isn’t the Problem

February 4, 2013 at 1:17 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

John Sides dismisses the idea that gerrymandering has led to our polarized politics.

“The most important influence on how members of Congress vote is not their constituents, but their party. This makes them out-of-step not only with the average American… but also, and ironically, with even their base. Members are more partisan than even voters in their party.”
