If Congress Votes Against Obama on Syria

September 9, 2013 at 12:38 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Two interesting views:

Ross Douthat: “It is to President Obama’s great discredit that he has staked this credibility on a vote whose outcome he failed to game out in advance. But if he loses that vote, the national interest as well as his political interests will take a tangible hit: for the next three years, American foreign policy will be in the hands of a president whose promises will ring consistently hollow, and whose ability to make good on his strategic commitments will be very much in doubt.”

Kevin Drum: “Presidents suffer defeats all the time. Obama lost on cap-and-trade. He’s lost on plenty of judicial and executive branch nominations. He couldn’t get agreement for a grand bargain. He lost on gun control. What’s more, Republicans have been opposing him on virtually everything from the day he took office. In what concrete way would a defeat on Syria change this dynamic in even the slightest way?”

Stringer Pulls Ahead of Spitzer

September 9, 2013 at 12:35 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Quinnipiac poll in New York City shows Scott Stringer breaking out of the too-close-to-call comptroller’s race with Eliot Spitzer and now leads 50% to 43%.

Said pollster Maurice Carroll: “Stringer has the momentum as he overcomes a huge publicity
blitz by Spitzer. He’s not home free, but he looks to be on the plus side of the
racial split with a big white vote offsetting the almost as big black vote for Spitzer.”

Opposition to Intervention in Syria Surges

September 9, 2013 at 12:23 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Pew Research: “Over just the past week, the share of Americans who oppose U.S. airstrikes in Syria has surged 15 points, from 48% to 63%, as many who were undecided about the issue have turned against military action. By contrast, the share of Americans who support airstrikes remains virtually unchanged: Just 28% favor U.S. military airstrikes against Syria in response to reports that its government used chemical weapons.”

The Week: The four biggest challenges Obama faces in his address to the nation on Syria.

Has Obama Lost the Bully Pulpit?

September 9, 2013 at 12:20 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

David Gergen: “Obama’s speeches — despite their rhetorical strength and skilled delivery — have had little success in moving his agenda forward. Americans still like him, but they tend to make up their own minds about his policies. Witness his inability, even now, to build a public majority in favor of Obamacare. The White House would argue that a majority have supported his stands on gun control and gay rights, but is that because of his speeches or because of demographic shifts and events such as the Newtown elementary school massacre?”

“Indeed, there is now a debate among political scientists whether the bully pulpit is all that it is cracked up to be, especially in contemporary politics.”

Bonus Quote of the Day

September 9, 2013 at 11:36 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Congress is not that good a job anymore. You know, frankly there’s such a center of gravity around stopping anything from happening, the Tea Party Right has frankly held hostage the place. It’s not a great place if you want to go and solve problems.”

— Anthony Weiner, on the Today Show.

Pryor Leads Cotton in Arkansas

September 9, 2013 at 11:34 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Global Strategy Group (D) poll in Arkansas finds Sen. Mark Pryor (D-AR) holds a six-point lead over Rep. Tom Cotton (R-AR), 47% to 41%.

Iowa Grants Gun Permits to Blind People

September 9, 2013 at 11:29 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Iowa is granting permits to acquire or carry guns in public to people who are legally or completely blind,” the Des Moines Register reports.

“No one questions the legality of the permits. State law does not allow sheriffs to deny an Iowan the right to carry a weapon based on physical ability.”

“The quandary centers squarely on public safety. Advocates for the disabled and Iowa law enforcement officers disagree over whether it’s a good idea for visually disabled Iowans to have weapons.”

Wilson

September 9, 2013 at 10:30 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Out this week: Wilson by A. Scott Berg.

“One hundred years after his inauguration, Woodrow Wilson still stands as one of the most influential figures of the twentieth century, and one of the most enigmatic. And now, after more than a decade of research and writing, Pulitzer Prize-winning author A. Scott Berg has completed Wilson–the most personal and penetrating biography ever written about the 28th President.”

Quote of the Day

September 9, 2013 at 9:03 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“We’re stepping on the toes of a lot of the establishment that’s been
controlling this state government for a long, long time, on both the
left and the right.”

– North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory (R), quoted by the Washington Post.

Party of Hawks Turns Dovish on Syria

September 9, 2013 at 9:01 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “Of all the unexpected turns in the Syria debate, one stands out most: The GOP, the party of a muscular national defense, has gone the way of the dove.”

“A decade after leading the country into Iraq and Afghanistan, Republicans have little appetite or energy for a strike aimed at punishing Bashar Assad for allegedly gassing his own people. To the contrary, many of the party’s lawmakers are lining up to sink President Barack Obama’s war authorization vote.”

Big Majority Opposed to Military Strike Against Syria

September 9, 2013 at 6:56 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new CNN/ORC International poll released shows that “even though eight in 10 Americans believe that the Bashar al-Assad regime gassed its own people, a strong majority doesn’t want Congress to pass a resolution authorizing a military strike against the regime.”

“More than seven in 10 say such a strike would not achieve significant goals for the U.S. and a similar amount say it’s not in the national interest for the U.S. to get involved in Syria’s bloody two-year long civil war.”

De Blasio Holds Big Lead in Primary

September 9, 2013 at 6:52 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Public Policy Polling survey in New York City finds Bill de Blasio on the cusp of winning the Democratic nomination outright Tuesday. He’s at 38%, followed by William Thompson at 19%, Christine Quinn at 13%, Anthony Weiner at 9%, and John Liu at 5%.

A new Quinniapiac poll finds De Blasio leads with 39%, followed by Thompson at 25%, Quinn at 18%, Weiner at 6%, and John Liu at 4%.

Clinton Will Speak on Syria

September 9, 2013 at 6:10 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Hillary Clinton will make her first public remarks about Syria on Monday when she makes a visit to the White House for an unrelated event, a Clinton aide told Politico.

“The comments, the first since an unidentified aide said last week that the former Secretary of State supports President Obama in going before Congress to get support for a limited strike against Syria, will come after she meets privately with Obama at the White House, the aide said.”

RFK Jr.’s Sex Diary

September 8, 2013 at 11:30 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The New York Post reviewed the “secret diary” of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as he “grappled with what he called his biggest defect — ‘my lust demons’ — while keeping a scorecard of more than two dozen conquests.”

“The thick, red journal was found in their home by his wife, Mary Richardson Kennedy, who, distraught over their impending divorce and Kennedy’s serial philandering, committed suicide last year. A copy of the 398 pages, reviewed by The Post, details RFK Jr.’s daily activities, speeches, political activism and the lives of his six children in the year 2001. But they also record the names of women — with numbers from 1 to 10 next to each entry.”

“The codes corresponded to sexual acts, with 10 meaning intercourse, Mary told a confidant. There are 37 women named in the ledger, 16 of whom get 10s.”

Most Lawmakers are Undecided on Syria

September 8, 2013 at 8:41 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A USA Today survey of senators and representatives “finds that only a small fraction of the 533 lawmakers — 22 senators and 22 House members — are willing to say they will support the use of force in response to the reported use of chemical weapons by the Syrian regime.”

“Far more overall — 19 senators and 130 House members — say they will oppose a resolution that would authorize military strikes. There are two vacant seats in the House where lawmakers resigned and have not yet been replaced.”

“The largest group of lawmakers remains undecided, including a majority of the Senate and the House.”

Quote of the Day

September 8, 2013 at 8:35 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“You follow this pro-corporate trend to its logical conclusion, and sooner or later you’ll end up with a Supreme Court that functions as a wholly owned subsidiary of big business.”

— Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), quoted by Politico, denouncing the Supreme Court as a right wing panel that serves the interests of corporate America.

Poll Shows de Blasio Close to Avoiding Runoff

September 8, 2013 at 8:30 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Wall Street Journal/NBC/Marist Poll in New York City finds Bill de Blasio has the support of 36% of likely Democratic voters in the race for mayor, followed by Christine Quinn at 20%, Bill Thompson at 20% and Anthony Weiner at 7%.

De Blasio’s showing puts him within striking distance of the 40% needed in the primary to avoid a runoff for the party’s nomination.

Bush and Cheney in the White House

September 8, 2013 at 9:55 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

This looks really good: Days of Fire: Bush and Cheney in the White House by Peter Baker.

“The real story of Bush and Cheney is a far more fascinating tale than the familiar suspicion that Cheney was the power behind the throne… Baker paints a riveting portrait of a partnership that evolved dramatically over time, from the early days when Bush leaned on Cheney, making him the most influential vice president in history, to their final hours, when the two had grown so far apart they were clashing in the West Wing.”
